TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop Announces Audition Dates for the Musical BRIGHT STAR

Open auditions for The Drama Workshop’s production of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s bluegrass musical BRIGHT STAR will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 23 and at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 24. If needed, call backs will be held on Wednesday, February 26 at 7 p.m.

BRIGHT STAR will open on August 7 and close on August 23. Rehearsals will begin mid-June. The show will be directed by Dennis Murphy with musical direction by Linda Abbott.

Set in Richmond and Asheville and small towns in the Smokey Mountains, Bright Star tells two stories that take place 22 years apart. One story is about a young man returning home from WWII and pursuing a career in journalism. The second story is about a young woman whose newborn child is taken from her and put up for adoption. The two stories are woven together until they reach a magical and  emotional conclusion.

The cast of 18 includes roles for men and women ages 18-70.  There are 6 principal roles for men and 4 principal roles for women.

Those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of a song that shows off their best vocal abilities. Bluegrass songs are encouraged, if possible, but not necessary.  Please bring a picture of yourself, a resume and sheet music in your key.  You will also be asked to read from the script and to participate in a short dance audition.
