CCM MainStage Series Continues with Broadway Classic GUYS AND DOLLS

CCM_Guys and Dolls promoFeaturing iconic musical numbers like “Luck be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” this lavish production marks the 50th anniversary of CCM Musical Theatre.

CINCINNATI, OH — UC’s College-Conservatory of Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Musical Theatre program with a cherished musical comedy from Broadway’s golden age, Guys and Dolls. Named one of Cincinnati CityBeat’s “most eagerly anticipated fall productions” and listed in Cincinnati’s Magazine’s “10 can’t-miss performances,” Guys and Dolls opens at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium.

The musical tells the story of Nathan Detroit, a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while eluding the authorities. Detroit turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, who ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sister Sarah Brown as a result.

Featuring iconic musical numbers like “Luck Be a Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” and more, this Tony Award-winning show takes audiences from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana in a tale of saints and sinners and the lengths they will go for love.

Directed and choreographed by Professor Diane Lala, with musical direction by Professor Roger Grodsky, Guys and Dolls showcases the unbelievable on-stage talent of CCM’s musical theatre majors with live accompaniment by CCM’s world-class student orchestra.

CCM’s production also features a special appearance from dramatic performance alumnus Dain Alan Paige (BFA, 1992) as Arvide Abernathy. Paige has appeared in several productions at the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati including Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. Most recently, Paige was on stage as Willy Wonka in Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka at the Carnegie Theatre in Covington, Kentucky.

“CCM established the first BFA musical theatre program in the country, and we are rated as one of the top musical theatre programs in the country,” Lala says. “Celebrate our golden anniversary with us as we present this award-winning classic musical.”

CCM Musical Theatre 50th Anniversary gala: Arts lovers are invited to get “all dolled up” for a special performance of Guys and Dolls followed by the one-night-only Saints and Sinners Bash on Oct. 20, 2018. Celebrate Cincinnati’s Contributions to Music History with CINCINNATI KING

World premiere musical showcases the groundbreaking rise of King Records

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will celebrate the local voices, stories and talents that cemented Cincinnati in music history in CINCINNATI KING, a new world premiere musical that begins Nov. 3 (Opening night is Nov. 8.)  It runs through Dec. 23 and is staged with support from The Rosenthal Family Foundation, Season Sponsor of New Work.

“Blues, jazz, country and rock ‘n’ roll wouldn’t be what it is without Cincinnati,” states Playhouse Associate Artist KJ Sanchez. The script is based on years of research and interviews by Sanchez, who is writer/director, and by other community members and Playhouse staff and board members. CINCINNATI KING is produced in conjunction with American Records, a theatre company that chronicles American history founded by Sanchez.

CINCINNATI KING tells the story of King Records founder Syd Nathan, his groundbreaking rise, the music he created and artists he produced, including singer Little Willie John and session drummer Philip Paul.

“You go around the country and everybody knows about Cleveland, they know about Detroit, but people don’t know about Cincinnati,” states Philip Paul’s character in the play. “Before Johnny Cash and Elvis, before James Brown, before Carl Perkins, before Sam Phillips and Sun, before Verve…Before all that? There was King Records.”

Philip Paul, Syd Nathan and Little Willie John are the three main characters in CINCINNATI KING, which begins with Philip Paul ending a set and coming downstage to talk to the audience as if they are interviewing him. The ghost of Syd Nathan then comes onstage and decides that he needs to be interviewed, too, so he can set the record straight.

The play is part documentary, with dialogue from actual interviews with Paul, along with imagined lines from Nathan based on information from research and other interviews about him.

“I don’t in any way want people to think this is the definitive ‘King Records Story,’” Sanchez explains. “I decided to go deeper with fewer people, to focus on the drama and the personal, emotional stories. I hope this play inspires more movies and plays about all the incredible King Records artists.”

Cincinnati is celebrating the 75th anniversary of King Records Studio’s opening this year. Local organizations like King Studios Foundation, Music Heritage Foundation, Bootsy Collins Foundation and the City of Cincinnati are celebrating the milestone through cultural and artistic events. CINCINNATI KING is the culmination of the anniversary celebrations.

Auditions Announced for THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS THE MUSICAL at Cincinnati Music Theatre

CMTCincinnati Music Theatre announces auditions for their Studio Theatre Series production of THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS THE MUSICAL

A musical tribute to, and loving spoof of, the composing styles and shows of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Kander and Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and musical theatre in general.

Directed by Dennis Murphy

  • Saturday, November 3, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 4, 7:00-10:00 p.m.

Clifton United Methodist Church
3416 Clifton Avenue (just north of Clifton and Ludlow)

The cast calls for 2 men and 2 women performers and an ensemble of 4 voices. The performers in The Musical of Musicals are presenting not one, but five, 15-minute musicals. Each musical uses the same plotline which is based on the standard melodrama plot of a villainous landlord threatening a helpless maiden who can’t pay her rent until the handsome hero steps in and pays it for her.  In all five musicals, the soprano is always the heroine, the tenor is always the hero, the baritone is always the villain and the mezzo is always the character actress.  The mini-musicals are each written “in the style of “ Rogers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Kander and Ebb.  The characters in each musical are drawn from all of the composer’s shows.

In addition to the four main roles, there is an opportunity to use 2 men and 2 woman to join in the fun as Dream Ballet dancers, wedding guests, roller skaters, Kit Kat Klub girls and more. All of the performers must be versatile actors who can play a variety of characters, sing and dance in the style of each of the composing teams.  It is helpful if they also have a broad knowledge of the works of each of the composers. Age is not as important as being able to capture a sense of each character and knowing what makes the character funny.

To sign up for an audition slot and to download required forms, visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054fa5a92fa5f49-audition.

Performance dates are Feb. 8-16.
