The Human Race Theatre Company to Present ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END

HRTC_Erma Bombeck logoApril 19 – May 13, 2018

HRTC_Joplin-Jennifer-2017

Jennifer Joplin.

(Dayton, OH) —The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) announces a special spring 2018 production of Allison Engel and Margaret Engel’s ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END in the 54-seat performance space at its Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center. Dayton’s own Erma Bombeck takes center stage in this touching one-woman comedy titled after her long-running newspaper column and directed by Heather N. Powell. Human Race Resident Artist Jennifer Joplin stars as the literary icon whose candid commentary on life as a woman, spouse and mother made her the champion of suburban housewives everywhere and her newspaper columns a mainstay on kitchen refrigerators for over thirty years. Full of personal anecdotes and sprinkled with plenty of Bombeck’s famous one-liners, it’s a charming biography that proves “if you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.”

“I’m thrilled this funny and poignant play is coming to Dayton, Erma’s hometown,” said Teri Rizvi, founder and director of the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop at the University of Dayton. “Her wit and wisdom have stood the test of time — and remind us that the foibles of family life will always make us laugh.”

Special preview performances of ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END for the Bombeck Writers’ Workshop are Thursday, April 19 – Sunday, April 22. The public preview performance is Thursday, April 26. Opening night is Friday, April 27.

Director Powell helmed HRTC’s 2015 production of Steel Magnolias at the Loft Theatre, as well as the company’s touring productions of Change and A Dickens of a Time. Joplin is a Wright State University graduate who has appeared in dozens of productions at HRTC and throughout Cincinnati.

Performance and special event information
Tickets for the April 26 – May 13 performances of ERMA BOMBECK: AT WIT’S END are currently only available to 2017-2018 Eichelberger Loft Season subscribers and will go on sale to the general public for $25 starting November 21. Seating is general admission.

All performances are in The Human Race’s Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center, located at 116 North Jefferson Street, 2nd floor, in downtown Dayton, Ohio. Show times for Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End are 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons.

Comedic Odd Couple Takes the Internet to Task in a Risky, Original New Show

MISC_45 Second Challenge promo

Comic actors Tatum Hunter and Kevin Crowley
bring a new energy to scripted comedy in Cincinnati

45 SECOND CHALLENGE, a new play written by Tatum Hunter, directed by Bridget Leak and performed by Tatum Hunter and Kevin Crowley, will run from Aug. 3 to Aug. 6 at the Graydon Head & Ritchey event space at 1421 Main in Over-the-Rhine.

Cincinnati’s comedy scene has been growing with the creation of ComedySportz Cincinnati, big business moves from groups like OTRimprov and Improv Cincinnati and more small venues like Video Archive and Myrtle’s Punch House offering stand-up shows. But scripted theatre is still largely held separate from the city’s developing comedy scene, with no popular sketch show in town and most funny plays marketed as lighthearted dramedies.

Hunter and Crowley are looking to change that. They want to encourage more comedians to present scripted pieces and connect more theater-makers and patrons with the local comedy scene.

Hunter and Crowley are professional actors and dedicated, experienced improv comedians. Hunter just finished a yearlong contract at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and Crowley has appeared on the main stage at Steppenwolf and Second City in Chicago and in many film and TV projects. Director Bridget Leak co-founded Cincinnati theatre company Queen City Flash; her work has appeared at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Know Theatre, Cincinnati Fringe Festival and Xavier University.

Hunter decided to write a dark comedy to perform with Crowley after seeing him perform at an improv show in Northside.

“Kevin is one of the most hilarious and talented people I know, and I saw potential for us as a duo because our energies are so totally opposite,” Hunter said. “He didn’t bat an eye when I said I wanted to do live theatre about the Internet, and he’s helped turn a semi-ridiculous idea into a show that we’re both really proud of.”

Here’s the show in a nutshell: In a world a little bit stranger than our own (but only a little bit), a father and daughter start an online fundraising campaign to commemorate their late wife and mother. However, their idea quickly spins out of control and threatens to destroy their relationship, their town and the world. Hunter and Crowley play an entire cast of characters, including a sadistic mayor with a longstanding grudge, her blindly loyal assistant, a wannabe motivational speaker and a crop of narcissistic townspeople that definitely won’t remind you of yourself.

45 SECOND CHALLENGE uses comedy to take a closer look at Internet activism, Facebook politics and the unshakable pull of self-interest. Absolutely zero children should be brought into this show.

Tickets are available at 45secondchallenge.weebly.com for 8 p.m. on Aug. 3-5 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 6. Tickets will also be available at the door – cash and credit accepted. Please join us for craft beers at 7 p.m. on opening night.

Smash the Patriarchy with Know Theatre’s New Comedy MARIAN, OR THE TRUE TALE OF ROBIN HOOD

KTC_Marian promo

Directed by Alice Flanders
July 28 – August 19, 2017

The future is female…but so was the past!

Know Theatre proudly kicks off our 20th Anniversary Season with a tale that flips the script on a legend you only think you know.

Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (very few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John.

As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a troubled time?

Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle.

Making her MainStage directing debut is Managing Director Alice Flanders, at the helm of this action-packed new comedy.

We asked Alice what made her jump at the chance to direct Marian, straight off the heels of its world premiere with New York’s Flux Theatre Ensemble in 2016. Here’s what she had to say:

“Playwright Adam Szymkowicz takes a script that we are so used to seeing we don’t even notice it anymore, and he turns it on its head.

We get a Robin Hood whose background is the unexpected. We get a merry band of humans, some of which are men, some of which are women, and some of which are trying to figure out where they fall between the two. We get a boatload of representation, and representation in the media matters.

And lucky for us, Alice has assembled a blockbuster cast for this swashbuckling adventure.

Taking on the iconic title role is Maggie Lou Rader, who wowed Know audiences as pioneering astronomer Henrietta Leavitt in 2016’s Silent Sky.

Says Rader:

“There’s so much to love about this show, the cast is delightful, the script is a riot, and we’ve been having a ball putting this story together for the stage.

But perhaps most importantly, representation is important and this show gives a platform for so many people to step into the story of Robin Hood and the Merry Men who may not have had the opportunity before.

I think every child pretends he or she is Robin Hood at some point and I still can’t quite grasp how lucky I am to embody both Robin and Maid Marian at the same time.”

Joining her to bring the outlaws of Sherwood Forest to life are a diverse and hilarious group of local talents – some familiar, and some new to Know fans!

Cincinnati Fringe Festival Producer Chris Wesselman returns to the MainStage for the first time since 2015’s All Childish Things as the lovable and loyal Little John. Fans of the Cincy Fringe will also recognize Leah Strasser in her Know MainStage debut. A founding member of perennial Fringe favorites Homegrown Theatre Company, Leah plays Alanna Dale, whose desire to join the Merry Men gets her into adventures she never imagined!

Also making their Know MainStage debuts are Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Geoffrey Barnes, Brandon Burton, and Candice Handy; former Playhouse in the Park Acting Interns Greg Mallios and Ernaisja Curry, and former Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Acting Apprentice Samantha Russell.

And making his triumphant return to the Know after 2016’s smash-hit comedy The Fisherman’s Wife is Cal Harris, as greedy Prince John!

But beyond the cast, the fights in this story are a character unto themselves! And we are fortunate to have fightmaster Jonn Baca working with us to keep the swash in our buckle. Know fans will remember the excitement of Baca’s fights in 2016’s Pulp and 2015’s Hearts Like Fists, as well many others at the Know and as countless other productions around the region!

Why kick off our 20th Anniversary season with this uproarious tale of derring-do?

Says Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford,

It just felt right to begin this season with a brand new play that reinvents an old story in such delightful ways. At the Know, we have a history of hollowing out traditional narratives for new works. That we can do it while simultaneously celebrating love and individuality (and giving the patriarchy what-for) is deeply satisfying and so much fun.

So, come smash the patriarchy with us and experience the legend of Robin Hood as you’ve never seen it before!
