Character Descriptions:

  • Tom Durnin (mid-late 50s)
  • James Durnin, his son (mid-late 20s)
  • Chris Wyatt, his son-in-law (mid 30s)
  • Katie Nicholson, creative writing classmate and emerging romantic interest of James (mid-late 20s)
  • Karen Brown-Canedy, Tom’s ex-wife, James’ mother (50s)

Tom Durnin is a disbarred lawyer who has spent the last five years in prison for a fraudulent investment scheme. He returns to his family, envisioning a happy reunion and catching up on lost time. What he finds instead is a son (James) who is struggling with a job he hates, a marriage that has failed, and resentment towards his father for much of it. While James reluctantly allows Tom to camp out on his couch, the rest of the family is even less thrilled about Tom’s return. His now ex-wife Karen has moved on to another marriage, unbeknownst to Tom, and his daughter will not allow him to see his grandchildren, though her husband Chris, who owes his job to his father-in-law, is caught between competing loyalties. The family, still hurting, has managed to move on, but Tom’s return to them in hopes of reclaiming a happier past dredges up even more pain.

In a 2015 interview about his work as a whole, Levenson notes: “I do find the dynamics in the family to be fascinating and endlessly variable. Family is, obviously, among the most universal experiences. We all come from some kind of family, for better or worse, healthy or not. Family has always been very important to me and has always been something that is such a rich part of our experience. I guess people living together is always a fraught enterprise, filled with so much beauty, so much joy and so much sorrow.”

The National New Play Network Rolling Premiere of PULP Opens Oct. 7 at the Know

ktc_pulp-logoIn PULP, playwright Joseph Zettelmaier, author of Know’s 2015 hit Star Wars caper All Childish Things, puts classic genre tropes in a blender to create a brand new comedy that jumps from paperback to paperback down the bookshelves as the mystery unfolds.

Bringing this noir world to the stage is an all star cast of Cincinnati favorites.

Know’s Education Director Maggie Lou Rader (Silent Sky, Hearts Like Fists) returns to the MainStage as femme-fatale romance writer Desiree St. Clair.

Justin McCombs (Silent Sky, Moby Dick) takes on the role of Walter Kingston-Smith, a wealthy playboy who dabbles at writing superhero pulps. Know favorite Darnell Pierre Benjamin returns for the first time since 2014’s Harry & the Thief as Bradley Rayburn, an up and coming sci-fi writer.

Rounding out the the suspects is MadCap Puppets Artistic Director Dylan Shelton (The Dragon, Bull) as horror writer R.A. Lyncroft.

And making his Know Theatre debut as PI Frank Ellery is longtime Cincinnati Shakespeare Company ensemble member Paul Riopelle.

PULP is part of a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, which kicked off at the Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis last spring. The show will be produced at Michigan’s Williamston Theatre concurrently to the Know’s production.

NNPN’s Rolling World Premiere program supports three or more theatres that choose to produce the same new play within a 12 month period. The result is a rolling world premiere, giving a playwright the chance to develop a new work with multiple creative teams in at least three different communities.

The playwright is part of the process, working on the script and making adjustments based on what is learned from each production.

PULP is the second NNPN rolling world premiere in which Know Theatre has taken part, the first being Steve Yockey’s Pluto in 2014.

Says Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford, “There are so many things that excite me about tackling this show: our fantastic cast, the thrill of working on an evolving world premiere script, and my own personal love for the pulp stories of the 30s through 50s.

I grew up reading Ray Bradbury’s science fiction, and the Maltese Falcon is a favorite of mine (both the book and the film). And of course we had such a great time with Joe’s All Childish Things, we’re excited to bring another of this prolific playwright’s works to Cincinnati audiences.

PULP runs October 7 through 29. Come find out what mayhem unfolds when reality becomes stranger than fiction in this rolling world premiere comedy.

CCM Opens 2016-2017 Mainstage Series with a Retelling of ROMEO AND JULIET

CCM_Romeo and Juliet promo

The University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music opens its 2016-17 Mainstage Series with a preview performance of William Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Patricia Corbett Theater.  With this modern production of the Bard’s beloved tragedy, director Brant Russell aims to preserve Shakespeare’s intentions and give CCM students the opportunity to bring these iconic roles to life.

CCM’s retelling of ROMEO AND JULIET weaves the familiar story of ill-fated young love with a modern comedic twist. “It’s a comedy…until it’s not,” said Assistant Professor of Acting Brant Russell.

“What I’m hoping the audience will take away from this is everything that CCM does so well; lavish production values and excellent young actors coming together to tell a story that means something to everyone,” Russell said. “Everything an audience has come to expect from CCM and its eye-popping productions will be present in this show.”

CCM Acting seniors Spencer Lackey andKatie McDonald play the title roles — an experience that would be a dream come true for many young actors. Russell is happy to showcase fresh faces, which is what the script actually calls for. According to the play’s text, Juliet is almost 14 years old and Romeo’s age is never explicitly mentioned.

“This production puts the beauty and eloquence of Shakespeare’s language front and center, but, in the mouths of these young actors, you’ll hear the language like you’ve never heard it before,” Russell said.

ROMEO AND JULIET opens on Wednesday, Sept. 28 (preview) and runs through Sunday, Oct. 2 at the CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.
