Know Theatre Announces Season 19

Know Theatre is so very excited to tell you some stories in
SEASON 19: Once Upon A Time

KTC_logoKnow Theatre is ready to rekindle your sense of wonder in Season 19. Join us and explore the stories we tell ourselves and each other: stories that amuse, that enlighten, and that help us to make sense of the world around us.

These are stories that push at the boundaries of our reality. From mythical Greece; to the 1840s, the 1930s, and the 1990s, to alternative versions of our own time – each of these stories reveals unexpected truths.

“In our 18th Season we produced more work than ever before,” says Producing Artistic Andrew Hungerford. “In season 19, we maintain that rigorous production schedule, and dig deep into stories that make us who we are: as individuals, as families, as friends, as artists, as humanity. We’re continuing to leverage our Playground to create brand new works with local artists. And we’ve assembled an eclectic collection of plays that includes gender parity in our playwrights, our directors, our creative teams, and our performers.”

With six MainStage productions, a special immersive event, year-round SecondStage programs, the 14th Annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and more surprises coming your way, Know Theatre has a story for everyone this season.

So pull up a chair. Gather around the campfire. Shine a flashlight at your chin.

Come in and play.

Directed by Lindsey Augusta Mercer
July 29-August 27, 2016

Nebraska, the 1990s. Two teenage boys – one a social outcast, the other the quintessential jock – explore a relationship during a summer of self-discovery between high school graduation and the rest of their lives. Set to the irresistible songs from Matthew Sweet’s landmark pop album of the same name, this rock musical from CCM alum (and local favorite) Todd Almond gives voice to those of us who grew up in small towns, those of us who didn’t quite fit in, and anybody who remembers the terror and thrill of first love.

10 words or less: A summer musical love story with lgbt themes.
Rated: PG-13

In 1930’s Los Angeles, washed-up PI Frank Ellery takes on the strangest case of his life. A noted literary agent has been gruesomely murdered, and the four suspects are his remaining clients, all writers for different pulp magazines. Frank dives into the mystery, and his world turns upside down as life begins to imitate literature. In this new comedy, science fiction, romance, adventure, and horror combine with one down-on-his-luck gumshoe who’s about to learn what really lurks between the lines.

A National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere from the author of Know’s 2015 hit All Childish Things.

10 words or less: A film noir comedy with a pulp fiction twist.

On the darkest night of the year, residents of a secluded Appalachian town gather at local pub, The Gnarly Stump, to share ghost stories and songs. When an outsider arrives reporting the mysterious disappearance of her sister the lines between story and reality become blurred.

This world premiere commissioned by Know Theatre pairs a book from the writers behind Know’s Saturday the 14th, We Will Rise: Stories from the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, and Disney’s upcoming live action Mulan, with music and lyrics from Paul Strickland, local fringe favorite and author of The Trailer Park Trilogy, My Messed Upera, and co-author of Andy’s House of [blank].

THE DRAGON PLAY
By Jenny Connell Davis
Directed by Tamara Winters

In rural Texas, a teenage boy and a dragon fall in love. A thousand miles north, a woman’s fragile marriage is tested when her fire-breathing ex-lover arrives on her doorstep. A darkly romantic drama, this regional premiere explores longing, loss, and the choices we make, in a world where time is fluid and people can be dragons.

10 words or less: Dragons are people and love is beautifully complicated.

HEAVIER THAN…
By Steve Yockey
Directed by TBA
Regional Premiere
March 10-April 1, 2017

This darkly comic mash-up of Greek myth unfolds in the heart of a labyrinth where Aster the Minotaur contemplates turning 30 in a world that sees him as nothing more than a murderous oddity. Aster has to navigate the impending arrival of warriors out to kill him, a deceptively enticing chorus of Fates, a plotting sister, and Icarus, a sexually obsessed boy with wings, all while pining to see his estranged Mother.

Steve Yockey, author of 2014’s Pluto and 2016’s The Fisherman’s Wife, uses a wry wit, lyric text, and legend to tell a painfully funny and moving story about the families we yearn for versus the families we have. Know is proud to present the second professional production of this evocative play, first produced by the Theatre @ Boston Court.

10 words or less: The Minotaur is turning 30 and could use some friends.
Rated: PG-13.

The Human Race Theatre Company Closes Out Its 29th Season with Terrence McNally’s MASTER CLASS

Human Race alumna Mierka Girten returns for a commanding turn as opera’s rebellious diva, Maria Callas, at The Loft Theatre, June 9 – 26, 2016

(Dayton, OH) — The Human Race rounds out its 2015-2016 season with the 1996 Tony Award winner for Best Play, Master Class. One of the opera world’s greatest legends takes center stage as Maria Callas gives three aspiring singers a rough introduction to the reality of performing. During a voice master class at the Julliard School, this controversial personality—now in the twilight of her career—remains fearless as she looks back upon her life—the triumphs and heartbreaks, the egos and ambitions, the glories and the scandals. This biographic drama presents a revealing look at a commanding diva and the sacrifice for art.

The production at The Human Race’s downtown Dayton home at The Loft Theatre is directed by Founding Resident Artist Scott Stoney, music directed by Resident Artist Sean Michael Flowers, and features actress Mierka Girten in a long-awaited return as opera’s rebellious diva, Maria Callas. She is joined onstage by Blake Friedman, Cassi Mikat and Jeremy Carlisle Parker as three opera performance students who seek to impress the living legend. Flowers and Stoney double-up in the production with acting roles of their own, Flowers as Callas’ dutiful accompanist on the piano, and Stoney in a cameo as a less-than-impressed stage hand forced to do Callas’ bidding with menial tasks. The preview performance of Master Class is Thursday, June 9. Opening night is Friday, June 10. The production runs through June 26.

Director Stoney took on Master Class with a life-long appreciation for operatic sopranos. “I have always loved high voices,” he states. “I had an obsession with Yma Sumac as a teen and even got to see one of her last concerts. Beverly Sills rips my heart out. The power of Joan Sutherland’s Turandot overwhelms me.” His admiration for Callas, he admits, is more recent. “What a treat to discover Maria’s unique sound as I prepared for this production. I knew her by reputation—‘Diva’—before. Having listened to as many recordings as I could and watched every YouTube clip, I am now a full-fledged fan. She’s a force of nature, as is the actress I have cast in the role.” For that actress, Cincinnati native Mierka Girten, Master Class is a Human Race homecoming. A Wright State University graduate, Girten appeared in productions of Baby, Little Shop of Horrors, Six Women with Brain Death, Bus Stop and Beehive during the theatre company’s early seasons over twenty years ago before settling in Chicago. “The roles she performed in during those early years are a testament to her enormous range and talent,” praises Stoney. “I was sad to lose her when she moved away, but I am thrilled that she’s returning. I know of no other actress more suited to the challenges of recreating Maria Callas on stage.”

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM

Starring as “Maria Callas,” Mierka Girten has performed in the Off-Broadway production of Mistakes Were Made and the national tour of The Secret Garden, as well as at numerous Chicago-area theatre companies. Her original one-woman show, With or Without Wings, chronicles her life with Multiple Sclerosis. She is a founding member of The Mookie Jam Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that raises money for artists with MS to help fund their medical expenses. Playing the roles of Callas’ Julliard voice student “victims” are Jeremy Carlisle Parker as “Sophie,” Blake Friedman as “Anthony” and Cassi Mikat as “Sharon.” Vandalia, Ohio native Parker is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music who has performed in Always…Patsy Cline (The Palace Theatre and Cortland Repertory Theatre), Guys and Dolls and The Spoilers (Thin Air Theatre Company), and Crumble and Around the World in 80 Days (Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati). Friedman is the current Resident Tenor for American Opera Projects’ Composer and the Voice Symposium and has appeared in Liebeslieder Walzer with New York City Ballet, Van Gogh’s Ear with Ensemble for the Romantic Century, and Barbiere di Siviglia with St. Pete Opera. Mikat appeared in The Human Race’s productions of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show and The Full Monty and recently graduated from Wright State’s Musical Theatre program where she performed in Sondheim on Sondheim, Les Misérables, Into the Woods and South Pacific. Appearing in a rare onstage role as the piano accompanist, “Emmanuel Weinstock,” Sean Michael Flowers is more familiar to Dayton theatre goers for his behind the scenes work as music director for past Human Race productions The Full Monty, Avenue Q and Bat Boy, and as the composer for the musicals Prometheus Dreams, The Trimble Wars, and Guarding Gold Street, and the plays Family Shots and The Retreat from Moscow.

Master Class marks the 17th time The Human Race’s technical director, Scott J. Kimmins (Family Shots, Band Geeks!, Brother Wolf), has served as the scenic designer for a production in The Loft theatre. Ball State University associate professor and internationally recognized costume designer Hyun Sook Kim takes her first turn with The Human Race, having created costumes for a number of productions in Korea, Australia, New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto and London. Resident Artist John Rensel is the lighting designer. Jay Brunner (The Glass Menagerie, The Santaland Diaries, Family Shots) returns as sound designer for his fourth production this season. Kristin A. Sutter is the stage manager.

Full biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Master Class is sponsored by The Allegro Fund of The Dayton Foundation, the Richard A. and Mary T. Whitney Fund for the Arts, Two Friends, Bill and Jackie Lockwood, the DP&L Foundation, Marion’s Piazza, Discover Classical Radio, Rob and Leesa Comparin and Jack and Maryann Bernstein.
