Sinclair Theatre Presents Shaker Play – AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

Sinclair Theatre students spent part of their winter break studying the Simple Gifts embraced by the Shakers at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, KY in preparation for their upcoming production of AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, February 12-20, in Sinclair’s Black Box Theatre.

The play, by Arlene Hutton, is the story of nine Shaker women and how their community is turned upside down when a newcomer claims to see visions of angels. Students on the trip saw the actual buildings where Shakers lived and worshipped as well as learned about their religious customs, governing structure and music.

“One of the most gratifying moments of the trip was when the cast sang ‘Simple Gifts’ in the actual meeting house where the Shakers worshipped,” says director Kimberly Borst. “The acoustics that were part of the original architecture made their sound absolutely breathtaking.” According to the docents at Pleasant Hill, music was the only creative outlet the sisters and brothers were allowed and even then, only for worshipping God. David McKibben serves as music director for the production and has helped prepare authentic Shaker hymns, including Simple Gifts, that will be performed a cappella just as they were in the 1830s.

Rebecca Henry plays Fanny, a “winter Shaker” who claims to have visions of angels. Shalemar Davis plays Hannah, a devout Eldress, who doesn’t understand why the angels don’t visit her. Rounding out the cast is Marley Judd, Erin McGee, Erin Waldon, Zoe Mull, Gabby Neuerer, Bryana Bentley and Ashlee Ferrell.

General admission seats cost $15 each with exception of Throwback Thursdays when ALL seats cost $10. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.sinclair.edu/tickets or at the box office, one hour prior to performances (if tickets are still available).

Performance times are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14 and at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Feb. 18th. Thursday and Sunday performances are American Sign Language interpreted by Anne Gotwald and Casey Jenkins.

With street level access off of 7th Street and through the Aronoff’s Weston Art Gallery, V’s interior design was created by Gina Vonderhaar and Charles Wright. The space is open and spacious, with warm, clean, natural materials and show posters on the wall, which pay homage to the some of the greatest shows in Broadway history, all of which have been seen at the Aronoff over the past twenty years.

In 1969, Don Vonderhaar Sr. started Vonderhaar’s catering in Reading, OH, and the first event he catered was his own wedding reception.  What started as a neighborhood market has grown into one of the largest catering companies in the region. Over the years, Vonderhaar’s has enjoyed steady growth and success thanks to their commitment to exceptional food and outstanding service – hallmarks that will be the cornerstone of V’s Café on 7th. Vonderhaar’s has proudly served Greater Cincinnati for the past 47 years, is still located in Reading, and employs 200 workers.

“We are very excited to be part of the amazing growth and vibrancy in downtown Cincinnati,” said Don Vonderhaar, Jr., owner of Vonderhaar’s Catering. “We are equally as thrilled to be part of the Aronoff Center and to promote the Vonderhaar brand to the downtown market. This is an exceptional opportunity for the continued expansion and exposure of our family-owned business.”

“We are pleased to welcome V’s Café on 7th to the Aronoff Center as one of downtown’s newest dining destinations,” said Todd Duesing, Aronoff Center Director of Operations.  “For 20 years, the Aronoff has been a hub of activity and a gathering place for Cincinnati residents and visitors. V’s is yet another way people can come together at the Aronoff – to enjoy a creative and delicious breakfast, lunch, or pre-show meal. Vonderhaar’s delivers spectacular café dining and catering options that garner applause, much like the many events at the Aronoff!”

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Receives Cultural Vibrancy Grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation

PIP_logo(CINCINNATI) – The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) recently awarded a $50,000 Cultural Vibrancy Grant to the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to help fund its Diverse Voices program. Diverse Voices aligns with GCF’s goal to expand citizen engagement in the arts by bringing diverse residents together around arts experiences.

In 2012, with the arrival of Artistic Director Blake Robison, the Playhouse developed a new strategic plan to set priorities for future programming and institutional growth. The Diverse Voices program, a direct result of this planning, has welcomed new, diverse faces to our audience with culturally specific programming, integrated artists of color into the organizational structure and empowered our associate artists in the decision making process of season planning.

The Playhouse has woven its associate artists — Timothy Douglas, Michael Evan Haney, KJ Sanchez and Eric Ting — and their diverse backgrounds, experiences and artistry into the fabric of the organization. The Diverse Voices program encompasses the Playhouse’s onstage programming, audience engagement work before and after performances, educational outreach programs and our role in the Cincinnati arts community.

The GCF grant will allow the theatre and its associate artists to further develop the Playhouse’s multicultural and multigenerational mainstage productions, continue to build relationships in the Greater Cincinnati community through outreach and special events and increasingly cultivate diverse audiences on and offsite through productions and events focused on multigenerational, multicultural and LGBTQ audiences.

One of the nation’s leading community foundations, The Greater Cincinnati Foundation helps people make the most of their giving to build a better community. GCF creates a prosperous Greater Cincinnati by investing in thriving people and vibrant places.

An effective steward of the community’s charitable resources since 1963, GCF inspires philanthropy in eight counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of the community contributors to the ArtsWave campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.
