Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Know Theatres TWENTIETH-CENTURY WAY with a 4 Star rating.

Long Beach, California ,1914. A scourge of homosexuality plagues the city. The Long Beach Police hire two actors to entrap gay men in the crime of “social vagrancy.” In an empty theatre, two actors meet while awaiting an audition. As tension between them mounts, they find themselves playing the story of a near forgotten piece of American history — a story from a time when people were prosecuted for daring to be themselves. But the truth of who these actors really are is slowly exposed as the story unzips.

Panelists called the play “a gem of a production” with a “fascinating, multilayered” script: “The Know Theater has another hit with TWENTIETH-CENTURY WAY.” Director Kimberly Fait Hickman was praised for “her fast-paced direction, for the balance between pathos and humor, and for making sure that the playwright’s thought-provoking points were emphasized.” Both lead actors in this two person play, Michael McKeough and Jens Rasmussen, were also commended: “A dazzling display of acting for both…McKeogh’s performance was clever, energetic, and at times created a level of empathy I haven’t felt in years at the theatre.”

The Twentieth Century Way continues through May 3rd. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.knowtheatre.com.

Sexy, Electrifying VENUS IN FUR Debuts At Cincinnati Playhouse, April 19-May 17

PIP_Venus in Fur(CINCINNATI) – David Ives’ seductive play of gender politics and power VENUS IN FUR brings Broadway’s hottest date night to the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Robert S. Marx Theatre April 19 through May 17.

Thomas is the playwright/director who has seen too many actresses he deems to be unsuited for the title role of his play, which is based on a 19th-century erotic masterpiece. After a frustrating day of auditions, in walks harried and tardy actress Vanda — and immediately Thomas and Vanda’s seesawing relationship takes off in a shower of frictionally dazzling sparks.

For Playhouse Associate Artist KJ Sanchez, who is directing VENUS IN FUR, the power play is the play’s attraction. “This is a well-matched game, and we watch Vanda and Thomas exploring, exploiting and teasing out many variations on power. “Vanda and Thomas delve into some notions that might be a bit risqué — but here’s the thing: What’s so great about this play is that we see how ‘normal’ people can drift into riskier relationships when chemistry gets involved. I think each of us has secret potential that can be unlocked by the right person. And that in itself is what both delights and challenges me.”

The steamy, intellectual dark comedy, which was inspired by Leopold Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 novel Venus in Furs, premiered off-Broadway in 2010. Its blockbuster Broadway run at Manhattan Theatre Club garnered a Tony nomination for best play. Its popularity is contagious — according to Theatre Communications Group, VENUS IN FUR is at the top of the list of most-produced plays by American regional theatres in the 2013-14 season (excluding Shakespeare and holiday-themed shows), with 22 productions scheduled. Ives’ plays include New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch De Spinoza, The School for Lies (adapted from Molière’s The Misanthrope), The Liar (adapted from Corneille),

Time Flies and Is He Dead? (adapted from Mark Twain). He is best known for VENUS IN FUR and his evening of six one-act plays, All in the Timing, which was produced at the Playhouse in 1996. Ives collaborated with director Roman Polanski for a film version of VENUS IN FUR, which premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and will make its North American debut at New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival in April. Heir Apparent, Ives’ adaptation of the Jean-Francois Regnard play, is slated to open off-Broadway in April for a limited engagement.

The Playhouse production of VENUS IN FUR features PJ Sosko as Thomas and Greta Wohlrabe as Vanda, both of whom are making their Playhouse debuts. The creative team includes set and costume designer Misha Kachman, lighting designer Kenton Yeager and sound designer Zach Williamson. Jenifer Morrow is the production stage manager; Andrea L. Shell is the second stage manager. Tickets for VENUS IN FUR range from $30 to $75, depending on seat location. OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY Pits Wall Street Against Main Street

New Edgecliff Theatre brings its 2013-14 Season (“Best Laid Plans”) to a close with Jerry Sterner’s timely and cautionary tale of Wall Street versus Main Street.

Wall Street takeover artist Lawrence Garfinkle’s computer is going tilt over the undervalued stock of New England Wire & Cable. If the stockholders back his take over, they will make a bundle but what will happen to the 1,200 employees and the community when he liquidates the assets? Opposing the rapacious financier are the genial man who has run the company since the year one and his chief operations officer. They bring in a young lawyer who specializes in fending off takeovers. Should she use “green mail”? Find a “white knight”? Employ a “shark repellent”? This compelling drama explores whether corporate raiders are creatures from the Black Lagoon of capitalism or realists.

During the 1980’s, Wall Street was seeing a rise in new strategies of investments, often bringing in big profits at the expense of smaller companies, their employees and the communities they supported. Originally produced Off-Broadway in 1989, “Other People’s Money” presented audiences with a new financial player – the corporate raider. With its accurate portrayal of legal and financial wheelings and dealings in this new era, it received the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play and garnered the John Gassner Playwriting Award for Jerry Sterner. In 1991 it was made into a major motion picture starring Danny DeVito in the role of the tactless and obnoxious “Larry the Liquidator”. Today, the play is almost prophetic with its warnings about Wall Street and the future of small businesses.

“This is a very timely play,” comments Producing Artistic Director Jim Stump. “The recent financial crisis reminded me in a lot of ways of what went on in the 1980’s. Americans saw many smaller businesses disappear as Wall Street investors saw a new way of getting a quick profit. Many people lost not only their jobs but the pensions and investments they had at small companies that were bought out, divided up and sold out from under them. This play intelligently addresses this phenomenon from multiple sides”

Directed by former New Edgecliff Theatre Artistic Director Greg Procaccino, the show runs April 16 through 26, 2014 at the Fifth Third Bank Theater, Aronoff Center for the Arts. The cast features Robert Allen, Mike Dennis, Christine Dye, Mike King, Elizabeth Molloy, and Mindy Seibert. Tickets are $25.25 for Adults, $20.25 for Seniors (60+) and $17.25 for Students. Tickets can be purchased now by calling 513.621.ARTS or online at www.cincinnatiarts.org.
