THE IRISH CURSE Comes Back to Clifton

CP_Irish Curse logoThis wickedly delightful and heart wrenching play by Martin Cassella is getting a second run in May due to popular demand. The Clifton Performance Theatre had a sold out run in March with lines winding outside the door on nights with a full house. The company decided to bring it back for 6 more shows. Originally the Clifton Players had planned to stage “Riverside” by Kevin Crowley in May. Schedule conflicts for the rather large cast of actors has now moved that to next season. The opening now gives the wildly talented cast to respond to requests for tickets by offering additional shows.

The League of Cincinnati Theatre’s gave the production 4.5 out of 5 stars with an LCT member adding “a hilarious and touching show…I was completely captivated…I got: emotional depth, laser-quick dialogue, and electric chemistry between characters.” David Lyman of the Cincinnati Enquirer adds, “This is as good an ensemble as any local stage has assembled all season. There is an enviable intimacy among them. Some of it is the familiarity built in to Casella’s script. But most of it stems from the remarkable interaction of these veteran actors.” The cast includes veterans Kevin Crowley, Buz Davis and Michael Bath and introduces Pete Wood to the Clifton audience.

What THE IRISH CURSE is — and how it manifests itself — is the raw centerpiece of this wicked, rollicking and very funny new play. From it’s blistering language to it’s brutally honest look at sex and body image, THE IRISH CURSE is a revealing portrait of how men, and society, define masculinity. In doing so, it dares to pose the fundamental question that has been on the minds of men since the beginning of time: “Do I measure up to the next guy?”

Size matters to this small group of Irish-American men who meet every Wednesday night, in a Catholic church basement, at a self-help group for men with small penises. This allegedly Irish trait is the focus of they’re weekly whining as they feel this “shortcoming” has ruined their lives.

One evening, when a twenty-something blue-collar guy joins the group, he challenges everything the other men thought about “the Irish curse” …tackling their obsession with body image and unmasking the comical and truthful questions of identity, masculinity, sex, relationships, and social status that define their lives.”

Nathan Neorr as Elwood P. Dowd.

Nathan Neorr as Elwood P. Dowd.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) recognizes the work of Nathan Neorr in HARVEY, playing now through April 27 at The Carnegie Performing Arts Center in Covington, KY.

“Whenever Neorr was not on stage, I just wanted him to come back on,” stated on LCT panelist. Another noted “he did his job, though clearly inspired by his predecessor, Jimmy Stewart.” Finally, “he breathed life into the character, adding humanity to the crowd of archetypes.”

Panelists noted that HARVEY is a “delightful and charming comedy/fantasy” which is the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a well-liked and inexhaustibly happy man from a respected family…and his best friend is an invisible man-sized rabbit named Harvey. Committing Elwood to a sanitarium, his social-climbing sister Veta is herself mistaken as loony while Elwood and Harvey gleefully carry out their bon vivant cocktail calendar with the hospital staff in hilarious pursuit.

[HARVEY continues through April 27.]

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) recognizes the work of Brianna Barnes as Louise and Sherry McCamley as Mama Rose in the Covedale Theatre’s GYPSY, playing now through May 4.

One panelist noted “Brianna Barnes (Louise) captured my attention from the moment she entered the stage. She managed to give us a range of emotion carrying us through self-consciousness humbleness, rage, pity, sorrow, and love, played with truthfulness and energy.” Another noted “the highlight of this show was Brianna Barnes as Louise who was completely authentic and charismatic throughout this show, has great poise and vocal talent, and made a stunning transformation from Louise to Gypsy Rose that never seemed forced or faked. She is truly a star.” Barnes is a junior Musical Theatre major at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music (CCM).

The panelists commended local veteran actress Sherry McCamley. “I particularly liked that she made this iconic role a human being. I was rooting for her character the entire time and felt she earned her song in Rose’s Turn.” McCamley “plays the tour de force role with great commitment and some knockout vocals!” Finally, “Mama Rose is a star vehicle with one of the best female roles in Broadway musicals and Sherry McCamley is up to the task both as a brash actor and singer. The songs “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and the climax, “Rose’s Turn” are key to the show and Sherry delivered on both.”
