Reviews: Behind the Curtain |

Directed by Dan Doerger

Cast: Lauren Bailey, Dee Anne Bryll, Kayleigh Howard, Dan Doerger, Tara Williams, Jeff Surber & Norma Rashid

Set in a small Texas town, Slasher follows the making of an extremely low-budget horror film. Between losing much of their funding, the conservative religious group trying to shut down production and the strange “accidents” that start befalling the cast and crew, Slasher is a frighteningly funny send up of the horror movie genre.

Showboat Majestic’s Final Show Applauded by LCT

The cast of Showboat Follies.

The cast of Showboat Follies.

After 23 years, Cincinnati Landmark Productions will no longer be operating the Showboat Majestic, the last original floating theater in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Their final production, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES, opened this weekend and panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) wanted to take the opportunity to recognize this tribute to Showboat as well as the many years of entertainment and music that it has provided.

As Landmark’s website describes it, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES is “a musical revue, featuring great songs from dozens of past shows, comic sketches, specialty dance numbers and a few surprises – in and out of the audience.”

Panelists recommended the show as “a fond farewell to the historic Showboat’s run…filled with melodrama, sketch comedy, and a parody of musicals,” as well as a historical review of the Showboat with audience participation. It was “a fun way to end the season for the showboat…The performers are all familiar favorites to ‘showboaters’ and it is obvious this is a love letter from their hearts to the boat and the ever loyal subscribers.” As one panelist put it, “I felt I was witnessing an important moment in the history of Cincinnati theatre…I heartily recommend the production as a chance to experience this theatre icon for what may be the last time and a chance to say goodbye.”

SHOWBOAT FOLLIES runs through September 29th. Tickets may be obtained on-line at http://www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. CINCINNATI, September 18, 2013 — Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Cincinnati’s stage for the classics, continues their 20th Anniversary Season with the John Steinbeck’s classic OF MICE AND MEN, playing October 18- November 10, 2013. This production is directed by Drew Fracher and features CSC Resident Ensemble members Jeremy Dubin and Jim Hopkins. The production is generously sponsored by LPK and the production design is sponsored by Raymond James.

An American literary classic, OF MICE AND MEN is John Steinbeck’s tale of enduring friendship amidst unendurable hardship. It tells the story of George and Lennie, two down-and-out migrant laborers in pursuit of work and their dream of a piece of land to call their own. As they travel from town to town, the pragmatic George (Jeremy Dubin) struggles to protect the giant but simple-minded Lennie (Jim Hopkins) from his own mistakes and the world’s cruelty. When they secure jobs at a working ranch, a hot-tempered and volatile ranch hand seems bent on causing them trouble, testing their resolve and the limits of their loyalty.

OF MICE AND MEN will feature long-time company members Jeremy Dubin and Jim Hopkins in the roles of George and Lennie. Audiences may remember Mr. Dubin most recently as Fagin in “Oliver Twist” and Sherlock Holmes in CSC’s hit production of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”. Audiences will remember Mr. Hopkins from his recent critically acclaimed performance of Bill Sykes in “Oliver Twist” and his unforgettable turn as Lady Bracknell in last winter’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”. “It’s such a beautiful and poignant story- the unlikely friendship of these two characters, and the tremendous loyalty they have for each other,” says Jeremy Dubin, “ To get to play that with someone who you already know so well and have so much performance history and experience with is incredibly exciting.”

Helming this project will be Drew Fracher, a favorite Cincinnati director. Mr. Fracher has directed several productions for CSC, including his critically acclaimed productions of the American classics “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Glass Menagerie”. “We’re incredibly excited to have Drew back,” says Producing Artistic Director Brian Phillips, “It’s a perfect match of director and material.” Mr. Fracher was featured as Pa in CSC’s 2012 production of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath”. The creative team behind 2012’s “The Grapes of Wrath”, one of the most critically acclaimed CSC productions of all time, reassembles for another great American masterpiece.

Performances of OF MICE AND MEN are scheduled from October 18-November 10, 2013 on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Preview performances are on Wednesday Oct. 16 and Thursday Oct. 17 at 7:30pm and tickets are $20. No performance on Sunday Oct. 20. The theater is located at 719 Race Street, downtown Cincinnati, two blocks west of the Aronoff Center. Single ticket prices range from $22-$31 on Thursdays and Sundays and from $26-$35 on Fridays and Saturdays. If available, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased 30 minutes before a show with a valid student ID. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply. BAB Seeks Costumer for LES MISERABLES

BAB_LOGOHi Theater Community,

This past week, our costumer for Les Miserables had to drop out of working on our show due to work-related reasons. We now need to replace her since we’re already 3 weeks into rehearsing and our show opens Dec 5th. The good news is we already have a costume plot finished and most of our cast’s measurements done. We also have 2-3 people willing to help gather costumes and/or sew. We do, however, need a Costumer to be in charge and oversee it all.

If you’re unfamiliar with our group we are a member of ACT Cincinnati and perform on the east side of town at Anderson Center Theater.

We will be very grateful if you can help us out. The show is going very well and we are all having a lot of fun. We just need to dress our cast 🙂

Please feel free to contact us at brieabi24601@gmail.com or call
Arlene Borock (director) at 513.658.8028 or John Schneider (producer) at 544.0606.

Thank you!
