Catherine Shultz as Sister Mary Amnesia.
(Cheviot, Ohio) The Drama Workshop, the award-winning community theater based at Cheviot’s Glenmore Playhouse, is excited to open Dan Goggin’s highly acclaimed musical, NUNSENSE, on Friday, October 4. The production is directed by Lizanne Ingram, with musical direction by Linda Abbot and choreography by Lauren Kinker, and is co-produced by Megan Schultheis and Gretchen Gantner.
NUNSENSE begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina (Dianna Davis), a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert (Karen Sowards), the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne (Amy Waldfogle); Sister Mary Leo (Kate Stark), a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia (Catherine Shultz), the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon with more than 5000 productions worldwide.
Amy Waldfogle is appearing in her second TDW show, having previously been seen in last year’s “Snoopy” as Peppermint Patty. “This is a funny, silly, have a good time show. It’s also kind of a love letter to the Church and to the men and women who dedicate their lives to it.”
She’s thrilled to be back on the TDW stage. She explained, “From the moment I first showed up for what was supposed to be a one time helping out as a favor to a friend, TDW has treated me like a long time, much loved member.”
Show dates for NUNSENSE are October 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 8 pm. Matinee performances will be offered on October 6, 13, and 20 at 2 pm. Tickets may be ordered through the TDW ticket line at 598-8303, or online at www.thedramaworkshop.org. All seats are $15.00. Sellout houses are occurring frequently, so reservations are strongly encouraged.
For an additional $35, patrons can convert their single-show ticket for NUNSENSE into a TDW 2013-2014 season ticket. Additional productions this year include “A 1940’s Radio Christmas Carol” (December), “12 Angry Men” (March), and “Suite Surrender” (May).
