New Theatre Company’s Inaugural Performance Features Three Local Playwrights

JUST BEYOND REACH
New Theatre Company’s inaugural performance features 3 local playwrights

New theatre company, Shark Eat Muffin, breaks onto the Cincinnati scene with a creative and collaborative night of short plays. Various themes were suggested on the company Facebook page and one was drawn at random. That theme was JUST BEYOND REACH and it allowed three very different but local playwrights to let their creativity thrive. Two months later the writers have created three short scripts all based around the interpretation of that theme.

Three local directors are working to develop the plays further and ultimate make them into a full performance at the Monmouth Theatre. This evening of theatre should provide a little something for everyone with a very thought provoking evening of what is “just beyond reach”.

Playwright Bios:

  • Abbie Doyle, (IT’S A REAL SHAME is a senior at McAuley High School and this is her first play performed. Her interest in playwriting began when she took an educational course from New Edgecliff Theatre, taught by Catie O’Keefe, this past November. When not scrambling to meet deadlines, Abbie is usually enforcing the stereotype of a teenage blogger or hanging out with her friends. Abbie has seen and owns all nine seasons of Seinfeld, is perpetually hungry, and wishes her dog could be here today to be wonderfully overwhelmed by all the smells, noises, and people.
  • David H. Hughes, (ACAPULCO), David has a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Cincinnati. He studied acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York. He played John in Clear Stage’s production of David Mamet’s “Oleanna.” For Wyoming Players he directed Diana Son’s “Stop Kiss” and most recently James McLure’s “Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star.” He is extremely grateful to Shark Eat Muffin for this rare opportunity.
  • Catie O’Keefe, (THE NOISE MAKER), Catie holds a BA in Theatre from Lewis & Clark College and a Masters in Playwriting from Royal Holloway University of London, after which, she studied for two years at the Royal Court Theatre Young Writers Program in London. Her work has been performed in London, Scotland, Holland, New York, Oregon, Colorado, Louisiana and Ohio. She is currently the Playwright-in-Residence at New Edgecliff Theatre and the Artistic Director for Shark Eat Muffin. She teaches playwriting workshops in the greater Cincinnati area and is a recipient of the Peggy Ramsay Grant working in the US and abroad.

The Carnegie Presents World Premiere Staged Reading of THE SANDMAN

The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center presents the World Premiere Staged Reading of THE SANDMAN

What: Staged Reading of THE SANDMAN, a New Musical by Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor

When: Sunday, October 7, 2012 – 7:30pm

Where: The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, 1028 Scott Boulevard | Covington, KY 41011

Cost: $25 General Admission

Description: Drawn from the more nightmarish fantasy of E.T.A. Hoffmann, author of “The Nutcracker,” comes a new and darkly comic musical tale – THE SANDMAN. When the family of an ingenious German clockmaker engages a new nanny to care for the children, a series of bizarre and unnatural events begins to unfold. As the Strauss family is thrust ever deeper into chaos, the sinister forces at play are revealed – forces from which only the children may be able to save them.

Featuring an all-star cast of local performers including Pam Myers, Bruce Cromer, Charlie Clark and Sara Mackie, The Carnegie’s special one-night-only musical reading of THE SANDMAN provides the very first look at a thrilling new work by locally and nationally renowned writing team Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor (ACE, PARENTING PROJECT and JOURNEY TO THE WEST.)

About The Carnegie: The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center is a multidisciplinary arts venue serving the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati community. Over the course of the past ten years The Carnegie has “morphed” from a grassroots gallery with an education component into an all-inclusive arts organization offering professional theatre, art exhibitions showcasing the best of local and regional artists, and a comprehensive arts education program.

The Carnegie is home to the Carnegie Galleries, comprised of more than 6,000 square feet of gallery space where emerging and established artists exhibit in multiple shows throughout the year; the Eva G. Farris Education Center, which provides arts education to thousands of children, many of whom are at or below the poverty level; and the newly renovated 465-seat Otto M. Budig Theatre, which offers an affordable theatre space for local, up-and coming and established production companies and is home to The Carnegie’s Theatre and Concert Series. The Carnegie is the largest arts venue in Northern Kentucky.

The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center receives ongoing operating support from ArtsWave, Kenton County Fiscal Courts, the Kentucky Arts Council and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. / US Bank Foundation.

KTC Receives Recognition from The American Theatre Wing

Know Theatre of Cincinnati receives recognition from The American Theatre Wing
Know Theatre wins prized National Theatre Company Grant honor from Founder of the Tony Awards

Know Theatre of Cincinnati is pleased to announce that the American Theatre Wing has awarded the company with one of their 2012 National Theatre Company Grants.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati is proud to have received this prestigious national award. The funds awarded will support operations for Know Theatre and its annual programs. Know Theatre of Cincinnati produces a mainstage season of innovative contemporary theatre, the annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival, a national tour of Calculus: The Musical! and The Jackson Street Market, a program dedicated to supporting and building the local artistic community. Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director, will be traveling to New York City in early October to accept the award and participate in media events and networking with the other recipients.

Other grant recipients this year are: Actors’ Shakespeare Project (Somerville, Massachusetts), ArtsWest (Seattle, Washington), Know Theatre of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, Ohio), NC Stage Company (Asheville, North Carolina), The New Jersey Repertory Company (Long Branch, New Jersey), CityRep (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), The Rogue Theatre (Tucson, Arizona), The Play Company (New York City, New York), The Theatre @ Boston Court (Pasadena, California), and Upstream Theater (St. Louis, Missouri).

“This grant is a huge boon to Know Theatre’s model, focus, and programming,” says Eric Vosmeier, Producing Artistic Director. “We are honored to have been recognized alongside these other amazing theaters. Know Theatre is at a crucial stage of our development and new funding such as this will be crucial for us to continue to move the organization forward. We are grateful to the American Theatre Wing for creating this program and honored to have been selected this year as a recipient.”

Created by American Theatre Wing, best known as the creator of the Antionette Perry “Tony” Awards, to recognize and support the most promising emerging theatre companies from around the country, the National Theatre Company grant honors 10 theaters annually. Companies chosen to receive the $10,000 grant have articulated a distinctive mission, cultivated an audience, and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen and demonstrate the quality, diversity, and dynamism of American theatre.

“For the third year in a row, our national grants committee was astounded by the breadth and depth of the work being done by non-profit theatre companies around this country. This year’s awardees cover the entire span of the United States and demonstrate the uniqueness, courage, and creativity that is the heart of the American Theatre,” said Lucie Arnaz, Chair of the Grants Committee. “These companies prove, once again, that great theatre isn’t just on Broadway between 40th and 50th streets, but that Broadway is a road that is 3,000 miles long.”
