The classic musical is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy, and Jud, the hired farmhand. The play takes place in 1906 in an Indian territory of the American West during the time when Oklahoma was established as a state. It tackles class issues between the farmers and the cowmen in the still-developing, rugged landscape of a state in its infancy as characters struggle to find hope, love and the fulfillment of “the American Dream.” It is also a romantic tale of love. Curly and Laurey both have feelings for each other but have difficulty expressing it because of their stubbornness. –StageAgent.com

2013 Summerfair Small Arts Org Award Application Opens

Summerfair Cincinnati opened application entries today for its 2013 Small Arts Organizations Awards program. Earlier this year,  Summerfair granted awards totaling $8,600 to seven Greater Cincinnati arts organizations through the program.

The awards provide assistance to local small and mid-sized arts organizations for the creation of new programs, expansion of current programs, or assistance with production or presentation expenses. The awards help increase opportunities for arts experiences for all members of the community regardless of age, ability, income or location.

“These awards were created to help small to mid-size arts organizations flourish in their respective communities,” said Sharon Strubbe, executive director of Summerfair Cincinnati. “The awards this year, as well as all of Summerfair Cincinnati’s year-round support of the arts in Greater Cincinnati, were made possible because of the tremendous outpour of attendance and support during Summerfair 2012.”

Criteria for receiving an award include the quality of the art performed or produced, diversity and number of people benefiting, innovative qualities, and the potential for attracting a new audience for the arts. Applications can be found on Summerfair.org. Entries must be postmarked by January 25, 2013.

The 2012 Summerfair Cincinnati Small Arts Organizations Award recipients included District A, Milford Theater Guilde, Acting up and Lebanon Theater Company, Marjorie Book Continuing Education, Sunset Players/The Arts Center at Dunham, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Covedale Center for the Performing Arts.

Support for the Small Arts Organizations Awards is provided by proceeds from the annual fine arts and crafts fair – Summerfair Cincinnati’s primary fundraiser – which takes place in May 31 to June 2, 2013 at Coney Island.

Individuals can learn more about Summerfair Cincinnati by visiting the organization’s website at www.summerfair.org or by sending an email to info@summerfair.org.
