“One of the funniest apocalypses of our time.” It is night-time in the world. The world is dark. Everyone’s afraid. Nobody knows if the sun, once down, will ever rise again. The Governor issues excited statements appealing for calm. A news team is on the scene but are they reporting the news or creating it? The media has more questions than answers. But there is a witness, and the witness will speak.

New Edgecliff Theatre is seeking actors and actresses for their 2014 Cincinnati Fringe production of “TRAGEDY: a tragedy” by Will Eno, directed by NET Associate Artistic Director Mark Seamon.

“The sun has set over streets of houses, government buildings and American backyards everywhere. The world is dark. A news team is on the scene. Their report: someone left the lawn sprinklers on; someone’s horse is loose; a seashell is lying in the grass; dogs run by. The Governor issues excited statements appealing for calm. It is night-time in the world. Everyone’s afraid. Everyone doesn’t know if the sun, once down, will ever rise again. But there is a witness, and the witness will speak.”

This ensemble piece features 5 characters that can be played by actors and actresses of any age over 21, any race or type. Rehearsals and performances will run May through early June.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Cincinnati New Edgecliff’s Other People’s Money with a 4 Star Rating.

In OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY, Wall Street takeover artist Lawrence Garfinkle’s computer is going tilt over the undervalued stock of New England Wire & Cable. If the stockholders back his take over, they will make a bundle but what will happen to the 1200 employees and the community when he liquidates the assets? This compelling drama explores whether corporate raiders are creatures from the Black Lagoon of capitalism or realists.

Panelists praised OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY as one of the most uniformly finished and well thought out productions from NET in a long while.” “Although presented as a period piece (the play was written in 1989), the themes and subjects of Other People’s Money are just as relevant today as they were then.” Director Greg Procaccino was praised for “communicating his vision” and doing “a great job of staging this show and drawing out the strengths of this piece.” Also commended was lead actor Mike Dennis as Lawrence Garfinkle and Mike King as William Coles. “Mike Dennis was fantastic!” one panelist commented, “his delivery, faces, physicality and energy were on point!” Mike King was “fantastic” and his “energy helped carry the show.”

OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY continues through April 26th. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.newedgecliff.com.

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY Pits Wall Street Against Main Street

New Edgecliff Theatre brings its 2013-14 Season (“Best Laid Plans”) to a close with Jerry Sterner’s timely and cautionary tale of Wall Street versus Main Street.

Wall Street takeover artist Lawrence Garfinkle’s computer is going tilt over the undervalued stock of New England Wire & Cable. If the stockholders back his take over, they will make a bundle but what will happen to the 1,200 employees and the community when he liquidates the assets? Opposing the rapacious financier are the genial man who has run the company since the year one and his chief operations officer. They bring in a young lawyer who specializes in fending off takeovers. Should she use “green mail”? Find a “white knight”? Employ a “shark repellent”? This compelling drama explores whether corporate raiders are creatures from the Black Lagoon of capitalism or realists.

During the 1980’s, Wall Street was seeing a rise in new strategies of investments, often bringing in big profits at the expense of smaller companies, their employees and the communities they supported. Originally produced Off-Broadway in 1989, “Other People’s Money” presented audiences with a new financial player – the corporate raider. With its accurate portrayal of legal and financial wheelings and dealings in this new era, it received the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play and garnered the John Gassner Playwriting Award for Jerry Sterner. In 1991 it was made into a major motion picture starring Danny DeVito in the role of the tactless and obnoxious “Larry the Liquidator”. Today, the play is almost prophetic with its warnings about Wall Street and the future of small businesses.

“This is a very timely play,” comments Producing Artistic Director Jim Stump. “The recent financial crisis reminded me in a lot of ways of what went on in the 1980’s. Americans saw many smaller businesses disappear as Wall Street investors saw a new way of getting a quick profit. Many people lost not only their jobs but the pensions and investments they had at small companies that were bought out, divided up and sold out from under them. This play intelligently addresses this phenomenon from multiple sides”

Directed by former New Edgecliff Theatre Artistic Director Greg Procaccino, the show runs April 16 through 26, 2014 at the Fifth Third Bank Theater, Aronoff Center for the Arts. The cast features Robert Allen, Mike Dennis, Christine Dye, Mike King, Elizabeth Molloy, and Mindy Seibert. Tickets are $25.25 for Adults, $20.25 for Seniors (60+) and $17.25 for Students. Tickets can be purchased now by calling 513.621.ARTS or online at www.cincinnatiarts.org.
