It was the kind of night when you caught yourself holding your breath for no reason at all.” So says private eye Harry Monday as he investigates three murders at the Peaceful Pines Sanitarium. In this 1940’s film noir murder mystery comedy, even the police are getting tired of coming out and ask Doctor Morrissey if he could just phone in the details. Then when Tara, a sultry soon-to-be-heiress, shows up, Harry puts his best foot forward… right in his mouth. “Odd how relatives always head up a suspect list,” he notes as the deceased’s families arrive. Odder still when he finds out they all belong to the same family!

MCP Announces Auditions for OF MICE AND MEN

Mason Community Players presents OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck

Directed by Rich Schmaltz
Produced by Tessa Catlin

Auditions to take place at the Mason Grange Hall
205 N. Mason Montgomery Rd., Mason 45040

Monday August 6 & Tuesday August 7 from 7-10 pm

Auditioners will be asked to perform cold readings from the script.

Several characters have “non-negotiable” physical characteristics where noted. All character ages listed are stage ages and are flexible.

  • George Milton – (30+) An everyman of average size.
  • Lennie Smalls – (30+) Lennie is very large and childlike; 6’4”+ and 250+ lbs preferred but “just plain big” will do; the performance is more important.
  • Candy – (60+) An old and at least somewhat pathetic man.
Slim – (30s-40s) Well respected team leader. He’s supposed to be handsome too but we have some leeway here.
  • Curley – (20s-early 30s) The Boss’ son, he is mean spirited and suffers from a Napolean complex. There is no specific height/size requirement but he needs to be shorter that the other actors (stage combat experience helpful).
  • Crooks – (30+) The African American stable hand.
  • Curley’s Wife (F) – (20s) Must be able to play the ingénue and the tramp at the same time.
  • Carlson – (30+) A somewhat pushy ranch hand.
  • Whit – (20s-30s) A ranch hand.
  • The Boss – (50s) A stern but fair man.

WARNING: There is substantial PG-13 language in this play as well as the relevant use of some specific racist and sexist language. Please be aware of this when you audition.

Rehearsals will begin with table reads in December/January. Full rehearsals begin in February.

Tentative show dates are April 5-7 & 12-14, 2013

DAMN YANKEES runs July 19-22

DAMN YANKEES
Presented by Mason Community Players
July 19-22
Mason

Middle-aged real estate agent Joe Boyd is a long-suffering fan of the pathetic Washington Senators baseball team. His wife Meg laments this (“Six Months Out Of Every Year”). After Meg has gone to bed, Joe sits up late, grumbling that if the Senators just had a “long ball hitter” they could beat the “damn Yankees”. “I’d sell my soul for a long ball hitter,” he laments. Suddenly, “Mr. Applegate” appears. He looks like a slick salesman, but he is really the Devil, and he offers Joe exactly that deal: if he gives up his soul, Joe will become “Joe Hardy”, the young slugger the Senators need. Joe accepts, even though he must leave his wife Meg (“Goodbye Old Girl”). However, Joe’s business sense makes him insist on an escape clause. The Senators’ last game is on September 25, and if he plays in that final game, he is “in for the duration”. If not, he has until 9 o’clock that night to walk away from the deal and return to his normal life.
