Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music Drama Department’s SPEECH AND DEBATE with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Written by Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Stephen Karam, SPEECH AND DEBATE feels ripped from today’s headlines. What begins as a story of on-line stalking quickly snowballs into a play that is part mystery, part coming-of-age story; a smart comedy and an insightful reflection of what it means to be young in America today.

Panelists called SPEECH AND DEBATE “a wonderful production…contemporary, real, and sometimes raw.” They were unanimous in praising Richard Hess’s direction: “tight and economical, allowing his actors to bond together in their awkwardness while slowly revealing their secrets.” The ensemble in the show “couldn’t be better…they worked marvelously together as a seamless unit”. Panelists singled out actress Katie Langham’s performance as Diwata: “brilliant, quick-delivery, comic in the truest sense”.

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) calls THE WEDDING SINGER a 4 Star production. Produced by Northern Kentucky University Department of Theatre and Dance, the show is a musical send-up of an 80’s wannabe rock star, making ends meet as a wedding singer, who changes his tune when he is left at the altar, but then meets the waitress who could help him get back on track.

“This is the type of bold, brassy, high-energy musical that highlights the talents of the NKU students,” extol LCT panelists.

Additionally, Ronnie Chamberlain’s authentic and bright huge array of costumes were recognized by LCT panelists, as one panelist noted “which covered the gamut from wedding dresses and tuxedos to business suits to impersonator outfits to typical casual dress of the 1980s…a costume warehouse!”

Panelists praised the production noting that this acclaimed 1987 play is “still fresh” in the hands of the Carnegie and “should definitely be seen by all”. Both lead actors, Dale Hodges as Daisy and Reggie Willis as Hoke were highly applauded: ‘Dale Hodges proves again that she is a member of Cincinnati’s acting royalty…both their performances were masterful and full bodied…they act with such skill that you don’t see any technique or tricks.”

Hoke, a thoughtful, unemployed black man who couldn’t seem to have less in common with his wealthy, Jewish client. The odd couple endure humorous and heartwarming struggles in their forced relationship, giving way over twenty-five years to a closeness and understanding that transcends the Civil Rights era in the Deep South.
