CINCINNATI, March 10, 2017 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s mainstage season continues with the American classic A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry. The production, running March 24 – April 15, 2017, is directed by Christopher V. Edwards and features Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, Burgess Byrd, and Torie Wiggins in the leading roles. The production is generously sponsored by Johnson Investment Council and Thompson Hine LLP.

A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of the Youngers, a working-class family in 1950s Chicago. An unexpected financial windfall gives them an opportunity for a better life, but tensions between Walter Lee (Geoffrey Warren Barnes) and family matriarch Lena (Burgess Byrd) combine threaten to shatter their opportunity at the American dream. A Raisin in the Sun’s premiere in 1959 made Lorraine Hansberry the first black female playwright to have a play produced on Broadway, as well as the youngest American playwright to win the New York Critics Drama Desk Award. The production also had Broadway’s first-ever black director, and was nominated for four Tony Awards. The play was notably revived on Broadway in 2004, and has been adapted multiple times to film, most notably in 1961 and in 2008, with productions featuring Sidney Poitier and Sean Combs, respectively, as Walter Lee.

Veteran director Christopher V. Edwards joins Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for the first time to direct this production. He says he is “very excited to be directing A Raisin in the Sun, as it’s one of the iconic plays that changed the landscape of American theater. It’s an epic play with a lot of dynamic language and deep relationships, and a Shakespeare company is well-prepared to handle that, because it’s the sort of thing they do all the time!”  Mr. Edwards is currently the Artistic Director of Nevada Conservatory Theatre in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He is also on the faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he teaches Directing, Theatre Management, Stage Combat and Performance. Prior to this, Chris was a company member, Director of Education, Associate Artistic Director and on the Interim Creative Team for the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Cold Spring, NY.

A Raisin in the Sun runs March 24 – April 15, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2:00 PM as well as April 15 at 2:00 PM. There is no performance on Sunday, March 26. Preview performances are Wednesday April 22 and Thursday April 23.

The theater is currently located at 719 Race Street, downtown Cincinnati, two blocks west of the Aronoff Center.  Single ticket prices range from $22-$38 on Thursdays and Sundays and from $26-$42 on Fridays and Saturdays.  Previews are $25.  If available, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased one hour before a show with a valid student ID.  This production is a part of this season’s subscription package. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted.  Ticketing fees may apply.  Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups as well as AAA members.  To purchase tickets or for more information, call the CSC Box Office at 513.381.BARD (2273) ext. 1, or go online at http://www.cincyshakes.com.

RICHARD III Review

RICHARD III presented by Cincinnati Shakespeare Company through March 11. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

Congratulations to Cincinnati Shakespeare Company! With the opening of RICHARD III, CSC becomes only the second theater company in the United States to complete Shakespeare’s entire history cycle in chronological order.

Billy Chace is exceptional as Richard, Duke of Gloucester who manipulates (and murders) his way to the throne through friend and foe to become King Richard III. Chace plays the role with great humor and zeal, giving us a King who is fully aware of his misdeeds and unapologetic in his quest for the crown.

Director Brian Isaac Phillips again keeps the action focused and brisk. The ensemble, across the board, was excellent, giving the production great energy and scope. Favorite scenes included Lady Anne’s (Aiden Sims) confrontation with Richard over the dead body of Henry VI, the grief-stricken, half-mad, curse-flinging Queen Margaret (Kelly Mengelkoch), and Queen Elizabeth (Sara Clark) going nose to nose with Richard after the death of her children.

The haunting dream shared by Richard and Henry, Earl of Richmond, was visually striking and appropriately creepy. The special stage effect added a unique element to the final battle between their forces.

Overall, a perfect and immensely satisfying conclusion to CSC’s four-year epic endeavor. Bravo!

My rating: 5 out of 5

The Best Seats in the House are Within Reach
“One of the things we are known for is a high level of intimacy- our audience feels that with our Resident Company of actors as well as their proximity to the stage,” said Mr. Phillips.  “In the brand new Otto M. Budig Theater, all seats are less than 20 feet from the stage. This means that the best seats in the house are within everyone’s reach.  And because every seat is going to be a wonderful experience, all of them will have the same price.”

One of the features of The Otto M. Budig Theater is an Upper Gallery. This is a row that is above the Lower Galley, sometimes referred to as a Balcony or Mezzanine level. The Upper Gallery overhangs the Lower Gallery at Row E on the sides and Row F in the center. Even sitting in Row G in the Upper Gallery, you are still within 20 feet from the stage!

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will now have a stage experience like Cincinnati has never seen before. Action will be taking place on the thrust of the stage (the portion that projects into the house) as well as deep into the stage space. Actors will also be performing in the aisles and in the Upper Gallery. “Directors are adept at creating an experience that is immersive and takes into consideration each vantage point for all patrons,” said Mr. Phillips. “We are encouraging our patrons to try different locations during the season throughout the theater to find their new favorite seat!”

Access for all is Within Reach
“We are immensely proud of the improved accessibility the new Otto M. Budig Theater offers our community,” says Mr. Phillips. “There are 5 wheelchair accessible seats in the new theater located in the Lower Gallery and in the Upper Gallery to offer varied options.”  There is a ramp to enter the Lower Gallery and an elevator to reach the Upper Gallery. “We also have included gender neutral restrooms on the 2nd floor of the building,” continues Mr. Phillips. “The comfort and access to ALL people was of paramount importance in the design of this state-of-the-art new facility.”

Internationally Influenced Design Within Reach
The Otto M. Budig Theater boasts many state-of-the-art features that were heavily influenced by venues across the globe.  The stunning interior and exterior draws inspiration from some of the greatest theaters in the world including the Royal National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe in London, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, and The Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada. “You’ll also see a glass entrance and glass that wraps most of the lower level helping create an engaging facade that activates the street corner,” says Mr. Phillips. The glass walls at the entrance also give transparency for pedestrians to view activity inside and for patrons to look out on the green space of Washington Park.

Inside the highly visible area of the elegant and dynamic entrance, is the bar and gathering space.  This lobby offers a space to socialize before and after shows and during intermissions.  The bar structure will be fully clad in reclaimed barn wood and the social space will be illuminated with lighting inspired by a starry night, giving a nod to the original practice of Shakespeare being performed outdoors.

Situated in the beautiful lobby of the new theatre, the Grand Stair has 38 steps to represent the 38 plays in Shakespeare’s Canon and to commemorate CSC’s Completion of the Canon in 2014 as one of the 1st 5 theaters in the U.S.  Pre and post show talks with students and patrons will be held in the lobby with the Grand Stair serving as additional casual seating. The staircase also brings patrons to the second level balcony, actors and students to the Education Performance Studio, and connects the lobby to the upper level which doubles as an event space for patron dinners, opening night receptions, community organization meetings and various other functions.  The rehearsal space will be visible from outside bringing exciting energy to the corner of 12th and Elm.

A Vibrant Community Within Reach
The stunning new Otto M. Budig Theater anchors the Classical Arts Corridor of Cincinnati’s thriving Over the Rhine (OTR) neighborhood. The cities most exciting restaurants, breweries, pubs, distilleries, shops, galleries, and more are enticingly close to the theater, making a unique and intimate evening well within your grasp.  There is ample parking available as well as direct access to two different Streetcar Stops.

A Flexible Season Subscription is Within Reach
