Cincinnati, May 28, 2021- Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s 2021 FREE Shakespeare in the Park Tour continues, after a few early May performances, on June 16 with 40+ performances of FREE Shakespeare all summer long through September 12, 2021!  This marks the return of the full outdoor program that had a truncated season due to the pandemic in 2020. The FREE Shakespeare in the Park tour will bring 3 different Shakespeare productions to parks and venues all across the tristate area including Cincinnati, Fairfield, Glendale, Lebanon, Madeira, Mason, Maysville, Milford, Oxford, Portsmouth, Sharonville, Springfield, and West Chester in Ohio, Burlington, Covington, and Erlanger in Kentucky, and Brookville, Lawrenceburg, and Richmond in Indiana – and more! These performances are FREE and open to the public to enjoy professional theatre outdoors in their community. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is constantly working to expand their reach further and further into the region and is proud to operate one of the largest programs for free outdoor Shakespeare in the nation, both in number of stops and the size of the region reached.

The popular Shakespeare titles, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Macbeth will be presented.  The cast features six actors from CSC Professional Touring Company including Marcus Anthony, Angelique Archer, Arrianna Chai, Tyren Duncan, Colleen Dougherty, and Brianna Miller. Directors include Jeremy Dubin (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Courtney Lucien (Romeo and Juliet), and Darnell Pierre Benjamin (Macbeth) under the direction of CSC’s Director of Education Candice Handy. Following the Park Tour, these shows will hopefully travel and tour to local schools, community centers, venues, and other performing arts locations through May 2022.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s FREE Shakespeare in the Park tour is the only professional outdoor theatre opportunity of this king in Cincinnati each summer, attracting more than 10,000 patrons to over 40 area parks during the summer months. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by William Shakespeare
What happens when feuding fairies meddle in the love lives of human couples? Comical adventures, mistaken identities, and a silly play-within-a-play! The cast of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is on tour with fairies, lovers and Nick Bottom and the Mechanicals as they hilariously attempt to rehearse and perform a play for the Duke’s wedding. In this whimsical forest, a happy ending is guaranteed for both sprites and mortals alike.

ROMEO AND JULIET by William Shakespeare
One of the most beloved romantic tragedies in Shakespeare’s canon, Romeo and Juliet is the tale of the Bard’s star-crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet fall instantly in love only to discover they come from feuding families. In defiance of their families, amidst the animosity of friends, and in concealment from their mentors, a young couple risk everything to be together. CSC is proud to present this modern production of Romeo and Juliet and prove its continued relevance in the lives of the young and old alike.

MACBETH by William Shakespeare
Prophecies. Ambition. Murder. Madness. In Shakespeare’s famous cursed play “Macbeth”, we see the darkness of the world overcome the light. After an encounter with three witches on a Scottish battlefield, Macbeth must make a decision that will change the course of her life.  Betrayal, love, bloodshed and tragedy adorn the path in this chilling, supernatural tale, leaving us wondering how far Macbeth will go to get what she wants. Tormented by visions and guilt when the price of his crimes take their toll, what fate awaits Macbeth? Find out in Shakespeare’s supernatural thriller.

Both shows are suitable for children and families of all ages and are approximately 90 minutes in length with an intermission.

Position Overview

The Technical Director is essential to the Production team of CSC, collaborating closely with designers, other production team members, the Production Manager, and the Producing Artistic Director to ensure that all projects produced at CSC are artistically executed to the highest possible standard.

The Technical Director is primarily responsible for the scenic build and installation of all CSC productions. They manage a team which oversees the electrics, sound, and video needs of CSC. Design opportunities may be available if they are both interested and qualified. This is a hands-on position that spends many working hours physically building or installing scenery.

Like all team members, the Technical Director is expected to follow evolving health and safety protocol as CSC navigates its reopening in response to changing expectations from the Actors’ Equity Association and various government institutions. They will also be involved in the rebuilding of their shop staff, the production team, and the departments operating procedures and cadence.

The Technical Director has base schedule of 40 working hours per week. Extended hours and modified work weeks may be necessary due to technical rehearsal schedules and specific production needs.

Responsibilities

Production

  • Oversee the build and install of all scenic designs (inclusive of minimal rigging and automation).
  • Execute budget passes against scenic design drafts.
  • Collaborate on build calendars with other department heads to coordinate element handoff timing.
  • Source and purchase materials necessary for scenic executions.
  • Engage contractors, rental houses, and specialists as necessitated by design execution.
  • Oversee CSC rentals from outside theaters and companies. Ensure all equipment is used properly and returned on time.
  • Execute notes from designers and production team members.
  • Lead strike and changeover calls, including set-up of tech tables and necessary equipment.
  • Assist as necessary with video and sound installs and strikes.
  • Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, design runs, and tech meetings.
  • Participate in the build process as necessary for design executions.
  • Execute projects as assigned through the Shakes Makes program.
  • Oversee shop and show maintenance and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain inventory of expendables; order supplies and stock items as needed.
  • Keep shop and storage areas safe, clean, and uncluttered.
  • Maintain scenic stock and oversee scenic rentals.
  • Participate in stage cleaning and preparation leading into technical rehearsals and build processes.

Management

  • Supervise scenic shop staff including, overhire, and contractors. This includes hiring, onboarding, evaluating, coaching, and leading these team members.
  • Collaborate with Production Manager for team member job descriptions and contracting.
  • Participate in searches for guest designers, production staff, and overhire.
  • Schedule department to ensure adequate support to meet scenic execution deadlines.
  • Regularly oversee members of the CSC Touring Company in production department rotations.
  • Participate in staff annual review processes, both for self-evaluation and direct-report evaluation.
  • Maintain and enforce high safety standards in shop, stage, and working spaces.

Fiscal

  • Collaborate with Production Manager to establish annual department budget and business plan, including budgets per production, overhire budgets, annual shop operating budgets, and capital expense recommendations.
  • Turn in expense reports and reimbursement requests to the Production Manager.
  • Track production budgets and labor resources.
  • Analyze end-of-show and end-of-season financial reports to observe spending patterns, budgetary issues, and identify reporting or processing errors.

General

  • Advance the diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and strategic goals of CSC.
  • Adhere to company policies and regulations per the CSC Company Handbook.
  • Maintain a safe, fair, and ethical working environment.
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager to improve overall aesthetic product and production processes.
  • Maintain CPR certification provided by CSC.
  • Provide personal, reliable mode of transportation.
  • Other duties as requested by the Production Manager.

  • Proficiency with PC use and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Able to convert design renderings into drafted construction drawings (Vectorworks preferred).
  • Familiarity with standard scenic construction techniques and best practices.
  • Previous experience budgeting designs and tracking expenses.
  • Willingness to learn and enforce OSHA safety standards and industry safety best-practices.
  • Able to communicate with designers, directors, technicians, vendors, and other collaborators verbally and in writing.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $38,000-$42,000 (received through biweekly payroll). In addition to this salary, the Technical Director receives:

Position Overview

The Associate Artistic Director actively collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director on programming decisions and executions to realize the mission and vision of CSC. Additionally, they oversee the casting process and new play development program at CSC. The Associate Artistic Director stages a number of mainstage, education, and outreach productions every season. This full-time position works a base schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This schedule flexes to accommodate rehearsals, production schedules, auditions, special events, and engagement programming.

The Associate Artistic Director is a member of the Leadership Team and Artistic Visionary Circle (AVC), alongside other directors and managers within the company. Within this team, the Associate Artistic Director represents the voices and interests of their programs and collaborators while weighing in on the overall operations of the company. As a member of the AVC, the Associate Artistic Director is actively involved in the programming and artistic decisions of the company.

The AVC realizes the artistic strategies of producers, directors, and designers within the resources allocated by the company. In response to the pandemic, CSC is in a state of recovery and rebuild. The incoming Associate Artistic Director should expect to be heavily involved in rebuilding and staffing the Resident Ensemble and the staff – which will likely be a multi-season effort. A successful candidate will have an involved approach to the work of every department that is associated with the AVC.

The Associate Artistic Director guides directors, playwrights, and producers through the casting and hiring processes for CSC’s programming. The Associate Artistic Director collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director, the Director of Education, and the Production Manager when it comes to building creative teams and engaging external artists as necessary for all CSC programming.

The Associate Artistic Director leads commissioned playwrights and their projects from inception to completion. They project-manage commissioning processes, providing consistent communication with potential and contracted playwrights, adhere to established deadlines, coordinate workshops, and lead community engagement efforts centered around the New Works Program of CSC. This may include overseeing the scheduling of the theater, rehearsal spaces, technical equipment, and personnel as necessary to support new play development work.

As a leader within the institution, the Associate Artistic Director drives progress against CSC’s DEIA Plan and Strategic Plan. They are active leaders and collaborators for stewarding progress in the Artistic, Production, Education, People, and Engagement sections of the Strategic Plan. Partnering closely with all of CSC’s leadership, the Associate Artistic Director manages internal and external communication regarding these plans including dashboard reporting, communication with the Board of Trustees, and representing the staff on the Board of Trustee’s DEIA committee.

Qualifications

Required skills include:

  • Demonstrated leadership.
  • Comfort with problem solving and making decisions with limited supervision.
  • Comfort serving in a public-facing role as a representative of the company and speaking publically.
  • Previous experience in theatrical Production and Performance (educational, intern, assistant, or associate-level experience acceptable).
  • Previous experience with schedule management or creation.

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience directing theatrical projects and collaborative processes.
  • Written communication skills to support public remarks, project summaries, and engagement materials.
  • General experience across multiple aspects of technical theater including stage management, costumes, scenic, lighting, props, scenic artistry, sound, projections, and front of house.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including Microsoft Outlook.
  • Proficiency with virtual meeting and distance learning platforms such as Zoom.

Responsibilities

Artistic

Production and Planning:

  • Drive artistic output and production quality improvements year-over-year.
  • Collaborate in creating an annual business plan with the Artistic Visionary Circle including schedules, budgets, and long-term planning for approval by Executive Leadership.
  • Direct 1-3 mainstage productions and 1-2 touring/outreach programs per season.
  • Attend first reads, designer runs, leadership meetings, production meetings, retreats, technical rehearsals, previews, special events, and post-mortems.
  • Present designs or remarks at first reads if designers/directors are unable to attend.
  • Oversee regular quality control of all productions including performances on the mainstage, touring, parks, and as needed.
  • Facilitate community conversations between artists and audience at regularly scheduled performances and as needed for special events.
  • Oversee the commission of new plays and serve as the project manager for each commissioning project from initial conversation through final draft.
  • Oversee creation of monthly script readings and discussions with all members of the company.

Casting & Team Building:

  • Engage in ongoing recruiting process to cultivate diverse candidate pools for available opportunities on design teams, staff, teaching artists, resident ensemble, touring company, and other opportunities. Participate regularly in hiring processes.
  • Craft all audition notices for local casting calls, EPAs, callbacks, New York and Chicago casting partners, and larger convention auditions.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for actors and casting partners.
  • Collect and distribute scene selections and materials for auditions.
  • Coordinate understudy assignments/performances for touring company members.
  • Hire and manage additional understudy casting as necessary.
  • Manage and maintain audition archive.

Vision & Leadership

Strategic Advancement

  • Serve as a member of Artistic Visionary Circle and the Leadership Team.
  • Take notes at Leadership Team meetings and create/distribute weekly staff email
  • Demonstrate clear leadership and ownership of many aspects of CSC’s DEIA Plan and Strategic Plan goals. Regularly report on the Company’s progress against its goals internally and externally.
  • Facilitate collaboration between Artistic Visionary Circle, the resident ensemble, and production designers to improve productivity, encourage creativity, and promote issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with the Producing Artistic Director regularly to discuss immediate and long-term artistic goals for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

Community Engagement

  • Serve as an ambassador to the region.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with community partners.
  • Create and manage collaborations with community partners that serve to advance the mission of CSC and build intentional connections between the Company and the Community.
  • Engage with professional groups, industry conferences, and regional institutions as needed.

Board Participation

  • Report to the Board of Trustees regarding Strategic Plan Progress and own the Strategic Update section of Board Meetings.
  • Sit on the DEIA committee of the Board of Trustees; report on DEIA plan progress and communicate openly about DEIA advancement and objectives between the Company and the Board.

In addition to the responsibilities above, all CSC staff may be asked to perform additional duties at the request of their supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full time, salaried, exempt position with an annual salary range of $37,000-41,000 (received through biweekly payroll). In addition to this salary, the Associate Artistic Director receives:

Position Overview

The Production Manager oversees the Production Department. The base schedule of this position is 9am-5pm Monday through Friday and flexes to accommodate production schedules, special events, and engagement programming.

The incoming Production Manager should expect to be heavily involved in rebuilding and staffing the Production Department – which will likely be a multi-season effort. A successful candidate will have an involved approach to the work of their department, which may include hands-on tasks such as work notes or maintenance.

The Production Manager leads a team of department heads, designers, artisans, and overhire in the execution of all production elements of CSC’s programming. Team size typically ranges from 10-20 people (depending on the number of active projects and their demands) with an estimated five direct reports to the Production Manager. The Production Manager also engages external collaborators and freelancers (such as guest designers) as budgets and projects allow.

The Production Manager is responsible for collaborating with members of the Business Visionary Circle to ensure that programming schedules allow all aspects of the Company to meet mission, engagement, and revenue-oriented goals. The Production Manager is responsible for overseeing the scheduling of the theater, rehearsal spaces, technical equipment, and personnel as necessary to support engagement, education, and philanthropic-driven work.

Qualifications

Required skills include:

  • Genuine leadership.
  • Comfortable solving problems and making decisions with limited supervision.
  • Previous experience in theatrical Production or Stage Management Departments (educational, intern, assistant, or associate-level experience acceptable).
  • Previous experience with schedule management or creation.

Preferred skills include:

  • Project Management experience.
  • Previous experience in financial management (expense tracking, budget creation, or similar).
  • Experience managing budgets and resources.
  • General experience across multiple aspects of technical theater including stage management, costumes, scenic, lighting, props, scenic artistry, sound, projections, and front of house.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including Microsoft Outlook.
  • Proficiency with virtual meeting and distance learning platforms such as Zoom.
  • Familiarity with AEA and SPT regulations and operations.

Responsibilities

Managerial & Fiscal
Business Planning & Scheduling:

  • Create an annual business plan including schedules, budgets, and long-term planning for the Production Department for approval by Executive Leadership.
  • Oversee creation of annual production and venue schedules and individual show schedules.
  • Establish design and budget deadlines for each production process.

Expense Tracking:

  • Compile weekly expense reports from production team members to track individual project and department spending.
  • Process own expenses and submit all reports to the General Manager.

Purchasing:

  • Collaborate with department heads to facilitate the purchase and sourcing of materials (stock, expendables, and specialty items) as necessary.
  • Facilitate capital expense purchases as approved in the annual Company budget.
  • Coordinate production equipment rentals and venue rentals as necessary.

Staffing:

  • Actively engage in a broad, continuous recruiting process to ensure diverse candidate pools for available opportunities on design teams, staff, and temporary engagements.
  • Supervise production team including department heads, assistants, overhire, and volunteers.
  • Coordinate department rotations and shop hours for touring company members.
  • Hire and manage production overhire and additional production staff as necessary.

Safety:

  • Establish and maintain departmental safety standards.
  • Serve as the Respiratory Program Administrator for the Company.
  • Meet fire and building code requirements.
  • Implement additional guidelines to optimize workplace safety.
  • Process and distribute incident reports regarding any workplace safety concerns or accidents.
  • Champion for improved safety standards year-over-year.

Programming & Artistic
Communication:

  • Distribute production meeting notes within (1) day of production meetings.
  • Coordinate and lead company through cadence of annual production schedule including design launches, project deadlines, rehearsals, technical, and performances.
  • Attend first reads, designer runs, leadership meetings, production meetings, retreats, technical rehearsals, special events, and post-mortems.
  • Present designs at first reads if designers are unable to attend.
  • Coordinate with department heads regarding production element completion deadlines and handoff dates for multi-department elements.
  • Coordinate install schedules with department heads to allow all departments access to the stage as necessary for project completion.
  • Manage Google Drive or other service for production documentation and communication.
  • Maintain production archive of past productions, financial activities, contracts, and schedules.

Maintenance:

  • Oversee regular cleaning and inspections of all production spaces including the booth, shops, warehouse, and theater.
  • Oversee offsite warehouse space, storage arrangements, and liaise with short-term tenant.

Vision:

  • Engage with professional groups, industry conferences, and regional institutions as needed.
  • Improve production artistic quality and consistency annually.
  • Facilitate collaboration between department heads and production designers to improve productivity, encourage creativity, and promote issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with the Producing Artistic Director regularly to discuss immediate and long-term production goals for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
  • Serve as a member of Artistic Visionary Circle with a specific focus on Production.

In addition to the responsibilities above, all CSC staff may be asked to perform additional duties at the request of their supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full time, salaried, exempt position with an annual salary range of $38,000-$42,000 (received through biweekly payroll). In addition to this salary, the Production Manager receives:
