Feb. 7-March 8
Eden Park

Directed by Anne Marie Cammarato

Cast: Jonathan Gillard Daly as Dan, Sarah Day as Betty & Jay Hobson as Barman

Two seniors bond over their shared affection for animals in this warm, gentle and offbeat Irish love story. Betty spends most of her time alone, when she’s not acting as a caregiver to her friend or her 19 cats. Still grieving for the love of his life, Dan finds his most faithful friend is his trusty dog, Chapatti. When their paths cross unexpectedly, these two lonely hearts find their lives and expectations for the future change in surprising ways as they rediscover the joy that comes with human companionship.
Advisory: CHAPATTI is appropriate for adults and older teenage audiences. It is a gentle and quirky romance, but it does contain strong adult language and other mature content.

Playhouse in the Park’s OFF THE HILL Season Continues with THEORY OF MIND

CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S 2014-15 OFF THE HILL SEASON CONTINUES WITH KEN LAZEBNIK’S THEORY OF MIND

PIP_Theory of the Mind(CINCINNATI) – The 2014-15 season of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s popular Off the Hill series for families continues with THEORY OF MIND by Ken LaZebnik. A sensitive, unsentimental portrait of relationships, it tells the story of Bill, a teenager who happens to live on the autism spectrum. Recommended for ages 11 and up, THEORY OF MIND will tour to community venues throughout the Tristate from Jan. 23 through Feb. 22. It will also be performed at Music Hall on Sunday, March 8, as part of Macy’s Arts Sampler.

THEORY OF MIND follows Bill’s first date with a young woman unsure of her own reasons for romance, exploring the challenges of a young man who wants desperately to love someone but struggles with the social skills needed to achieve a rewarding relationship.

“We’re really thrilled to revisit THEORY OF MIND, winner of the 2008 Macy’s New Play Prize for Young Audiences, which had its premiere at the Playhouse in 2009,” said Mark Lutwak, Playhouse director of education. “The show was enormously successful with students and adults alike, not only because of its sensitive representation of a character on the autism spectrum, but also because of the honest and humorous way in which it deals with adolescent communication and dating relationships.”

The THEORY OF MIND cast includes Christopher Michael Richardson as Bill, Kelsey Torstveit as Hilo and Alex Purcell as Police Officer/Parking Attendant/Box Office Guy. All are members of the Playhouse’s 2014-15 Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company. Bridget Leak, a former Playhouse directing intern, will direct the touring production. Other production team members include Katie Lupica (assistant director), Maggie Dick (costume designer), Trey Tatum (sound designer) and Tracy Hoida (stage manager).

“I’m excited about diving into this story with the acting interns,” said Leak. “This is a true actor’s piece — the characters are rich and the story is so beautifully crafted. It’s a show I am eager to share with Cincinnati audiences.”

In a special collaboration for THEORY OF MIND, the Playhouse is partnering with the Autism Society of Greater Cincinnati. “They’re going to be connecting us with new sectors in our community,” explained Lutwak, “as well as using this opportunity to provide context for the play and extend some of their own educational and advocacy work.”

THEORY OF MIND will tour to more than a dozen community venues (see schedule below). Admission is free or inexpensive and is available at the door. Contact the center near you for ticket information.

Budig Family Foundation and Heidelberg Distributing Company. The season sponsor of new work is The Lois and Richard Rosenthal Foundation.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of the community contributors to the ArtsWave campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

See Two Scrooges WAITING FOR GODOT at CSC

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company kicks off 2015 by staging Samuel Beckett’s absurdist play, WAITING FOR GODOT.

In GODOT, two loveable, hapless vagrants, Gogo and Didi, grapple with the mysteries of the universe, trading barbs and banter as they await the arrival of the eternally truant Godot.

Director Brian Isaac Phillips has cast Bruce Cromer and Nicholas Rose as the vagrants in this vaudevillian production. Both actors are easily recognizable to Cincinnati audiences.

Last week, Cromer completed his tenth season as Ebeneezer Scrooge in Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Bruce took on Scrooge when Joneal Joplin stepped away from the role, making Cromer the Playhouse’s fourth actor to play Scrooge.

This year was Rose’s fifth production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, on stage as Mr. Cupp and several other ensemble characters. He also had the responsibility of understudying the role of Scrooge.

As it happens from time to time in live theater, Bruce Cromer injured his ankle during a mid-December matinee. Fellow cast member Doug Rees (Fezziwig/Ghost of Christmas Present) posted this on Facebook.

Our “Scrooge” injured his ankle giving his always 110%, brilliant and fully committed performance at the matinée of A CHRISTMAS CAROL today; the hope is to have him back by Tuesday. In his place tonight stepped the formidable and remarkably poised Nick Rose. He could be forgiven if he managed to simply get through it; but he did oh so much more than that! Kudos to him, and to Christopher Richardson, Ollie Corchado and Alex Georges Purcell, who all stepped admirably into their understudy tracks as well!

By stepping into a performance as Scrooge, Nick Rose goes down in Playhouse history as the fifth actor to play Scrooge.

Local theater-goes have a great opportunity to see these two fine actors together in WAITING FOR GODOT. For me, it’s a “must-see” this theater season. I do expect this production to sell really well, so don’t wait to long to get tickets.
