MR. JOY reflects on the power of maintaining hope and faith through tragedy

CINCINNATI—Dayton native Daniel Beaty’s inspiring play MR. JOY will run from Sept. 23 through Oct. 22 at the Shelterhouse Theatre. In this contemporary drama, a single actress plays all nine characters, whose stories remind us of the power of community.

MR. JOY tells the compelling tale of a Chinese shoe-shop owner in Harlem who falls victim to a sudden and violent attack. Though the audience never meets Mr. Joy, they meet nine neighbors and area residents affected by the tragedy.

Beaty drew inspiration for the stage drama from real-life experiences. While living in New York as a struggling actor and artist, he used to take his shoes to a Chinese-American shop owner for repairs.

“He worked magic,” Beaty says. “I’d take my one pair of fancy, beat-up shoes into his shop, and they’d come out like new. One morning I woke up and the shop was boarded up and there was caution tape around the outside. I asked my neighbors what happened and people said, ‘You know, we think somebody attacked him.’ I never saw anything in the newspaper but it lived with me for a lot of years. I eventually wrote this play that asks the question, ‘What happened to Mr. Joy?’”

Beaty sets out to answer that question through the lens of characters who have different worldviews and personal experiences. In this way, Beaty invites the audience to explore the idea of how individuals are connected in the face of social and cultural forces.

“Most of my work deals with themes of race and class in America, and this was a Chinese-American man who had a shoe repair shop for many years in a largely African-American neighborhood,” says Beaty. “The possibility and the gift of artistry is to put those ideas in flesh and blood, in a character that’s dimensional in human form, and then create a well-crafted story that has humor, that has a lot of humanity, that sees the characters’ relationships with one another, that sees the characters fighting to overcome obstacles.”

All nine characters are portrayed poignantly by Debra Walton, whom audiences will remember from Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park productions Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Beehive. Skillfully and stirringly, Walton portrays adolescents and adults who span the spectrum of age, gender, ethnicity, class and identity.

Directed by Nicole Watson, MR. JOY weaves a sense of mystery into a series of personal narratives that lead up to understanding exactly what happened to the beloved community member. MR. JOY reminds us that there are always invisible ties that bind us together.

Beaty’s work returns to the Playhouse after he wrote and performed Through the Night in 2012. He is also a singer, filmmaker, poet, performance artist and activist who uses art as a tool for healing and social transformation.

Opening Sept. 28 (with public previews starting on Sept. 23), the production runs at the Shelterhouse Theatre at the Playhouse through Oct. 22.

Cincinnati Playhouse Brings Lavish Romantic Comedy Fit for the Queen to Cincinnati This Fall with SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

Smash hit production based on Oscar-winning film opens Sept. 2

CINCINNATI –The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park presents a celebration of passion and poetry in the Marx Theatre beginning Sept. 2 when SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE takes the stage. The beloved, Oscar-winning film comes to life in an extravagant production that’s both wildly funny and irresistibly romantic. The play runs through Sept. 30 in the Marx Theatre.

Twenty actors, one dog, dozens of beautiful period costumes and a full-scale Elizabethan set tell a magical and entertaining story that will delight Shakespeare aficionados and newcomers alike.

“A big, epic production like SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is what the Playhouse does best,” explains Blake Robison, artistic director and also director of the play. “Though the stage version sticks closely to the original screenplay, this is a story that belongs on stage.”

The stage production, which was a smash hit at its world premiere in London’s West End, is based on the film that imagines William Shakespeare with writer’s block. He’s on a deadline to write a new play for his creditors when he meets his muse, Viola, who aspires to be an actor at a time when a woman was queen but only men could act. Their forbidden romance inspires Shakespeare to write his classic Romeo and Juliet.

For Shakespeare fans, part of the show’s fun is identifying the script’s many allusions to the playwright’s other classic works and recognizing the historical figures, including Christopher Marlowe, Richard Burbage and Queen Elizabeth I, who make appearances in this speculative story. But Robison says its combination of romance, comedy and adventure also offers a unique invitation to Shakespearean novices.

“This production is great for adults and teens alike,” Robison explains. “It’s a wonderful way to dip your toe into the vast ocean of Shakespeare’s world. There are snippets of Romeo and Juliet played out before you in verse, but most of the action is in everyday language that is accessible and understandable to everyone.”

Prices for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE start at $35 for preview performances and $40 for regular performances; they vary depending on seat location and performance day and are subject to change. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Sept. 2-30
Marx Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Blake Robison

The beloved, Oscar-winning film comes to life onstage in an extravagant production that’s both wildly funny and irresistibly romantic. Young Will Shakespeare has writer’s block… the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he’s in desperate need of inspiration. That is, until he finds his muse – Viola. Against a bustling backdrop of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet. Critically adored after its premiere on London’s West End, this exuberant romantic comedy will make you believe in love above all. Advisory: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is better suited for adults and teenage audiences. The cheeky humor of the show may seem innocent and refined, but it also contains sexual situations and mature themes related to blooming romance, theatrical ego and mildly tortured artistic souls.
