MR. PARENT Review

By Katrina “Kat” Reynolds

MR. PARENT presented by Playhouse in the Park through Oct. 6th. I attended the opening night performance.

As its first 2024-2025 season offering in its Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre, Playhouse in the Park brings us MR. PARENT written by Melinda Lopez and Maurice Emmanuel Parent. Telling the story (or stories, rather) of an actor turned public school teacher in order to earn a steady paycheck, MR. PARENT is a one-person show told by the actor himself.

Director (and conception collaborator) Megan Sandberg-Zakian ensures the play space is used to its fullest. Incorporating a rather simple yet versatile set designed by Cristina Todesco, our actor-playing-a-teacher keeps the action going with steady movement. Lighting Designer Karen Perlow does an excellent job with mood-appropriate lighting – from the stark light of a classroom to the dimmer lights of a tense scene being performed in an audition.

As one can imagine, it can be difficult to go on at length over a 90 minute, one-person show. That does not mean, however, that this show lacks the proverbial punch. As an artist myself, I certainly have a kinship of sorts with Mr. Parent – but it is not necessary to share this kinship in order to get something from his art. The stories of a gay man of color trying to navigate the need to make his passion a way of paying the bills alone is a wonderful point of view for all to see. In addition, the transition from accepting a gig as a theatre teacher in the Boston Public School system for the stability by day so he could pursue artistic passion by night – leading him to realize he had actually learned to care about these children who sometimes lacked such care at home is a wild ride.

Mr. Parent (the writer/actor) gives audiences an all-encompassing performance that is clearly drawn from the students who touched his lives for a few short years. His delivery is spot-on and he keeps up the momentum easily. In addition, his tales are hilarious, relatable, touching, and heart-breaking – and even educational! Yes, there is a white board and dry erase markers and you will be taken to school.

In case you didn’t know, teachers have a thankless job – especially those in the public school sector. MR. PARENT is ultimately a love letter to those whose passion is to educate and better our future leaders with personal experiences to back it up. Maurice Emmanuel Parent is a passionate and sensitive human being who knows how to tell a story and this show is a lovely piece.

RUTKA: A New Musical Runs Oct. 13-Nov. 10

RUTKA: A New Musical
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Oct. 13-Nov. 10
Rouse Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Wendy C. Goldberg

You’ll never forget her name. A powerful indie-rock musical makes its world premiere in Cincinnati to launch its path to Broadway. Rutka’s world is consumed by the usual teen concerns, like friendships, gossip, a new haircut and the flickers of first love — all of which she documents in her diary. But the world at large is far from usual. It’s 1943 in war-torn Poland, as Rutka and her friends are trying to live life as normally as possible while confined in the Jewish Ghetto. With their futures and fates uncertain, they reach for hope, resilience and resistance. This all-new musical is a compelling drama based on Rutka’s Notebook — a publication of the real diary left behind by 14-year-old Rutka Laskier, and a shining example of how even one small voice can make a difference in the world. Rutka is brought to life by an extraordinary ensemble of young performers and with a raw and emotional sound, promising an unforgettable musical experience. Advisory: RUTKA is recommended for ages 12 and up. The teenage characters in Rutka try to live normal lives with discussions of first feelings of love, first kisses and new haircuts. Yet, the reality of the world around them includes descriptions of the violence and death associated with the Holocaust.

Cincinnati Playhouse Goes Back to School with Hilarious and Heartfelt Play MR. PARENT, Written and Performed by Former Teacher

CINCINNATI (Sept. 6 2024) – The Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre transforms into an urban public school classroom as writer-performer Maurice Emmanuel Parent takes the stage in MR. PARENT beginning Sept. 6. The endearing and charismatic solo performance recounts his real-life adventures of being a struggling actor who turns to teaching for a steady paycheck thinking, “How hard could it be?” The show runs through Oct. 6. Opening night is Sept. 12.

Equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, MR. PARENT is based on Parent’s personal stories and real-life adventures teaching by day and acting by night, which proves more challenging than he expected. Along the way, he encounters inequitable systems, finds brilliance in every kid he teaches and learns how we might all find the space to be ourselves.

“The reason I created MR. PARENT was to add to the multiple messages out there about kids,” Parent explains. “Kids are such sponges so if they can absorb or soak up hearing me tell them they are smart, capable and have every right to everything in this world just like everybody else, that will help them when they hear other messages telling them they are not smart, not capable and don’t deserve a space in this world.”

While performing Dominique Morisseau’s workplace dramedy Skeleton Crew at Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company, Director Megan Sandberg-Zakian encouraged Parent, whose diverse acting credits include A Raisin in the Sun, Angels in America, Man of La Mancha and King Lear, to share his story.

“He was really funny,” recalls director Megan Sandberg-Zakian, who along with playwright Melinda Lopez collaborated with Parent to bring MR. PARENT to life on stage. “On every rehearsal break he was like holding court with the other actors. There would be hilarity coming from that corner [of the room], and I would go over and hear him tell a story about kids. The stories were entertaining, engaging and funny. As I started listening to them, I realized he had something to work out. His experience was unmetabolized. It was both funny and painful.”

“I created MR. PARENT based off the parts of me that I wanted people to share and see and what I thought would serve kids,” Parent says. “And after years of being only part of myself, I learned I can’t live like that. I can’t function or be my best self if I’m doing that. MR. PARENT is about education, but it’s also about finding your passion and not being able to let go of it. For me it was performing, making art.”

Parent also hopes that the play will inspire people to “think about their neighborhood schools or the schools in their state and the way their state funds its schools. I also hope they find ways to support their schools such as becoming a volunteer or advocating for more funding.”
