The Sunshine Boys
June 19 – June 29, 2014
By Neil Simon

The story focuses on characters Al Lewis and Willy Clark, a one-time vaudevillian team known as”Lewis and Clark” who, over the course of forty-odd years, not only grew to hate each other but never spoke to each other off-stage throughout the final year of their act. The stubborn Clark, who was not ready for retirement, resented the wiser Lewis for breaking up the act when he opted to leave show business. It is now 1972 and CBS is inviting the team to reunite for a special on the history of comedy, with the pair representing the vaudeville era at its best. Clark is convinced by his nephew Ben to revive one of the old routine sone last time. Much of the humor is derived from efforts to get the two cantankerous actors into the same room for a rehearsal, their differences of opinion once they reunite, and their shenanigans on the actual broadcast.

Music by Tom Snow | Stage Adaptation byDean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie | Lyrics by Dean Pitchford | Based onthe original screenplay by Dean Pitchford | Additional Music by Eric Carmen,Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman

One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. This show is produced by the national award-winning Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre.

Showboat Majestic’s Final Show Applauded by LCT

The cast of Showboat Follies.

The cast of Showboat Follies.

After 23 years, Cincinnati Landmark Productions will no longer be operating the Showboat Majestic, the last original floating theater in the country and a National Historic Landmark. Their final production, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES, opened this weekend and panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) wanted to take the opportunity to recognize this tribute to Showboat as well as the many years of entertainment and music that it has provided.

As Landmark’s website describes it, SHOWBOAT FOLLIES is “a musical revue, featuring great songs from dozens of past shows, comic sketches, specialty dance numbers and a few surprises – in and out of the audience.”

Panelists recommended the show as “a fond farewell to the historic Showboat’s run…filled with melodrama, sketch comedy, and a parody of musicals,” as well as a historical review of the Showboat with audience participation. It was “a fun way to end the season for the showboat…The performers are all familiar favorites to ‘showboaters’ and it is obvious this is a love letter from their hearts to the boat and the ever loyal subscribers.” As one panelist put it, “I felt I was witnessing an important moment in the history of Cincinnati theatre…I heartily recommend the production as a chance to experience this theatre icon for what may be the last time and a chance to say goodbye.”

SHOWBOAT FOLLIES runs through September 29th. Tickets may be obtained on-line at http://www.cincinnatilandmarkproductions.com/sbm.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. More information about the League can be found at www.leagueofcincytheatres.com.
