BCT Presents THE SUGAR BEAN SISTERS

Set designer Chris Harmon has transformed the stage of Beavercreek Community Theatre into the ramshackle Florida swamp dwelling of “The Sugar Bean Sisters.”

The decidedly strange Nettle sisters will be plotting their escape from spinsterhood in the Sugar Bean, Florida swamp at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Fridays from Oct. 26-Nov. 4.

Willie Mae Nettles, portrayed by Terry Larson of Beavercreek, is going to Salt Lake to find a good Mormon husband while her sister, Faye Clementine, played by Monique Hobbs of Centerville, plans on hopping on a spaceship when it returns after a 25-year absence.

The Southern Gothic comedy of romance, murder and alien abduction begins with the sisters’ return to their swamp dwelling after a disastrous daytrip to Disney World, where Willie lost her prized Eva Gabor wig on Space Mountain.

Adding further lunacy to the show, a strange bird-like woman, played by Sarah Caplan of Dayton, suddenly appears out of the darkness of Buster Swamp, setting into motion a chain of extraordinary events.

Even more demented comedy is provided by Vidella Sparks, played by Jill Proudfoot of Kettering, and The Bishop Crumley, portrayed by Steve Strawser of Kettering.

While doing it with a bit of madness, playwright Nathan Sanders tells the story of family and faith.

“The Sugar Bean Sisters,” under the direction of Doug Lloyd of Dayton, is a production of BCT’s Edge of the Creek, its production arm specializing in shows for adult audiences.

Along with Harmon of Centerville, Lloyd has pulled together a strong crew featuring Hans Unser of Beavercreek as the stage manager and Kristi Lickliter of Dayton as the assistant director.

The swampy-feel of the set is enhanced by the lighting design of John Falkenbach of Dayton and the sound design of Tony Fende of Franklin.

The mother and daughter team of Stephanie Dickey of Englewood and Karen Berry of Dayton are the costumers while Rachel Jakubiak of Dayton is the producer.

Tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for students, BCT members and seniors, ages 55 and older. A group discount of $1 per ticket is available to groups of 10 or more when the tickets are purchased at the same time for the same performance.

Tickets can be reserved by calling 429-4737 and leaving a message or by emailing boxoffice@bctheatre.org. For more information, visit the theater’s Web site at http://www.bctheatre.org, where the tickets can be purchased online with a credit card.

BCT Presents MUSICAL CHAIRS Sept. 7-16

The first show of Beavercreek Community Theatre’s 2012-2013 season has the BCT audience watching an audience (on the stage) watching an off Broadway play.

MUSICAL CHAIRS, directed by Matt Owens of Beavercreek, is a light-hearted musical featuring the diverse drama that takes place within the audience.

It runs September 7-16 with 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday performances and 3 p.m. Sunday matinees at Beavercreek Community Theatre, located within the Lofino Center at 3868 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek.

Playwright Joe Preston, portrayed by Nick Vanderpool of Dayton, has had a long dry spell.

As his producer, played by Suzanne Clabaugh of Belmont, tries to calm his nerves, in walks his ex-wife and TV star Valerie Brooks, played by Katie Blankenship of Dayton, who has no idea that their failed relationship figures into the show’s plot.

To add to Joe’s angst, the audience includes three theater critics portrayed by Krista Stuber of Huber Heights, Daryl Copeland of Dayton and Brian Kester of Beavercreek.

The diverse audience also includes two typical “grey-haired matinee ladies” portrayed by Terry Lupp and Donna Cason, both of Dayton and a married couple that argues constantly, played by Dayton residents Lynn Kesson and Michael Stockstill.

And then there is the anxious young man, played by Jordan Tyler Duvall of Miamisburg, waiting for his date while a club singer, played by Matt Curry of Belmont, tries to impress his date, portrayed by Sydney Lanier of Beavercreek, after bringing her to the show on his motorcycle in the rain.

A few seats away, a newly-wealthy business man, played by Kip Moore of Dayton, endures the “culture” his wife, played by Pam McGinnis of Oakwood, is forcing upon him.

The crew of MUSICAL CHAIRS includes choreographer Katie Kerry of Kettering, pianist Jenn Clark of Beavercreek, stage manager Heather Croley of Kettering, stage assistant Hans Unser of Beavercreek, set designer Chris Harmon of Centerville, lighting designer John Falkenbach of Dayton, lighting assistant Mercedes Warren of Beavercreek, music director Ben Spencer of Riverside, producer Diana Blowers of Beavercreek and costume designers Lora Beaty of Centerville and Noelle Carpenter of Kettering.

Tickets, which are $13 for adults and $11 for students, BCT members and seniors, can be reserved by calling (937) 429-4737 and leaving a message or by emailing boxoffice@bctheatre.org.

For more information, visit the theater’s Web site at http://www.bctheatre.org, where the tickets can be purchased online with a credit card.

Season passes for all seven shows are $78 for an adult or $60 for a senior, student or BCT member while passes for five shows are $59 and $44 respectively and for three shows the pass is $37 and $30.

This light-hearted show is a great ensemble musical about an audience watching a play. Joe Preston has not had a hit in years but is hoping his new play will revive his career. Unfortunately, he is at the mercy of an off-Broadway audience consisting of two typical “grey-haired matinee ladies”, a married couple who argues all the time, an anxious young man waiting for his date, a not-so-bright singer trying to impress his date, a business man and his culture-vulture wife, three theatre critics, and Joe’s ex-wife. Poor Joe Preston!
