Long-haired, bell-bottom wearing hippies might seem out of place now, but the musical “Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” is as relevant today as it was 45 years ago when it debuted and changed the face of Broadway.

The musical’s message of love and peace helps bring people together in a time of turmoil.

Edge of the Creek Productions will present “Hair” during the weekends of September 13 and September 22 at the Beavercreek Community Theatre (BCT). Tickets are available at www.bctheatre.org, or by calling the box office at 429-4737.

Director Doug Lloyd, who directed the show six years ago at The Dayton Playhouse, jumped at the chance to direct it again at BCT.

“Everybody loves the show. I love the show. I remember that time so well because I lived through it. I love the music because it was the music of my youth,” Lloyd said. “I love the message of the show—peace, love, harmony and acceptance of one another.”

Watching the cast bring “Hair” to life is one of the joys of directing, said Lloyd.

“I love to watch it come together—a group of people coming together and becoming a tribe—you just can’t do this show without it changing you,” Lloyd said.

The cast of 22, includes people both familiar and new to the BCT stage:

  • Aaron Brewer, Fairborn – Steve/Margret Mead
  • Marcus Bedinger, Trotwood – Hiram/Soloist
  • Jamal Cann, Miamisburg — Hud
  • Suzanne Clabaugh, Dayton – Suzannah/Hubert
  • Kevin Craig, Lebanon – Walter/Monk
  • Kaleigh-Brooke Dillingham, Beavercreek – Jeannie/Monk
  • Jordan DuVall, Dayton — Woof
  • Tyler Haney, Dayton – George Berger
  • Tierra Isaac, Fairborn — Ronnie
  • Lynn Kesson, Dayton – Leatta/Blackboys Trio/I Believe Trio
  • Danielle Kubasky, Beavercreek — Sheila Franklin
  • Bobby Mitchum, Dayton – Claude Bukowski
  • Brett Norgaard, Centerville — Paul
  • Bryan Peak, Dayton – Mark
  • Hayley Penchoff, Dayton – Chrissy/Air backup
  • Stephanie Radford, Beavercreek – Dionne/Abe Lincoln/White Boys Trio
  • Chris Sains, Fairborn — Tuck
  • Vicki Sanders-Johnson, Beavercreek – Emmaretta/Nun
  • T.C. Schreier, West Carrolton — Thomas
  • Crystal Schultz, Beavercreek — Diane
  • Lindsay Sherman, Dayton – Lindsay/Black Boys Trio/Nun
  • Amber Todd, Beavercreek, — Mary

Stacy Gear is the choreographer; Lindsay Sherman is the music director; Kathleen Carroll is the costumer; and John Falkenbach is the lighting director.

“Hair” was the first rock musical, and it broke many taboos in theatre, according to Lloyd.

The show contains adult language, sexual innuendo and a very brief nude scene at the end of the first act. Parental discretion is advised.

“Any community might have people who have a problem with it, but our season ticket holders and our supporters are open-minded and supportive, and they will appreciate the show for what it is and its message,” Lloyd said.

Although Lloyd is thrilled with the cast’s progress, “Hair” does present some challenges like creating an authentic wardrobe complete with wigs, perfecting demanding dance numbers and studying the 60s.

“It’s a heavy music and dance show; there’s a lot of dance to learn. Most of the cast is not in the know of the 60s so they are learning about the era and doing a lot of research,” Lloyd said. “The cast is grasping their characters quite well, and have molded themselves into a tribe. I’m very happy with how things are going.”

Presented by Beavercreek Community Theatre

Beavercreek

Directed by Doug Lloyd
Music direction by Linday Sherman
Choreographed by Stacy Gear

The original rock musical that changed the face of theatre, Hair tells the story of the “tribe” – a group of politically active, long-haired hippies living a bohemian life in New York City – fighting against the draft and the Vietnam War. Claude, Berger, Sheila and their friends struggle to balance their young lives, loves and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war and their conservative parents and society. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the war as his friends have done, or to succumb to the pressures of his parents (and conservative America) to serve in Vietnam, compromising his pasafistic principles and risking his life. Filled with songs that became anthems of the anti-war movement and rock classics including, Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In, Hair, Easy to be Hard, and Good Morning Starshine, Hair is the voice and the ideals of a generation that will continue to be relevant for years to come.

Max Santucci as the Boring Old Scholar, Jacob Anderson as Geoffrey Chaucer & Matt Sellers as Harry Bailey.

There will be a lot of silliness going on when Beavercreek Community Theatre’s Youth Theatre presents Geoffrey Chaucer’s THE CANTERBURY TALES.

It begins with Chaucer’s literary masterpiece but, with the addition of some Monty Python-style humor, it quickly turns into a silly comedy.

The play, under the direction of Teresa Connair , features the tales being told as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.

THE CANTERBURY TALES runs from April 19 to April 28 with 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday performances and 3 p.m. Sunday matinees.

The cast includes Beavercreek residents Jacob Anderson , Adam Burke, Elina Dawson, Caroline Delaney, Patrick Fitzgerald, Alexis Rivera, Emma O’Keefe, Carol Sanderson, Joe Sellers, Matthew Sellers, Sierra Smith, Alexa Storar, Alexis Sullivan, Kiel Terrill and Lucy Dahlstrom.

It also includes Kathleen Anderson and Corinne Engber of Centerville, Elijah Smith and Alexa Stevens of Xenia and Dayton residents Simon Atkinson, Cora Hardern, Sydney Hardern, Emily Ray, Leo Santucci and Max Santucci.

The staff, along with Connair of Dayton, includes Sara Naderer of Fairborn as the assistant director and stage manager, costumer Linda Sellers of Beavercreek and producer Mary Mathieu of Beavercreek.

Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for students, seniors and BCT members and $8 for those in 8th grade and younger. There will also be mat seating in front of the stage for children age 10 and younger for $5. Chaperones are permitted in the mat area for $10. A group discount of $1 per ticket is available to groups of 10 or more when purchased at the same time for the same performance.

Tickets can be reserved by calling BCT at 429-4737 and leaving a message or by e-mailing boxoffice@bctheatre.org. Tickets can also be ordered online, using a credit card, at www.bctheatre.org.

Beavercreek Community Theatre is located within the Lofino Adult Enrichment and Cultural Arts Center at 3868 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek.

THE CANTERURY TALES Runs April 19-28

THE CANTERURY TALES
BCT_Canterbury TalesPresented by Beavercreek Community Theatre Children’s Theatre
April 19-28
Beavercreek

Directed by Teresa Connair

Start with Chaucer’s literary masterpiece, toss in a good helping of Monty Python-styled humor, and you get this incredibly silly comedy. You’ll meet many of the pilgrims whose tales are most likely to be studied in high school (along with a few Thanksgiving pilgrims that ended up in the wrong play!), including the knight, the miller, the parson, the pardoner, the nun’s priest and the friar. Even the wife of Bath has cleaned up her act for this adaptation and is now a nagging woman who sells self-help DVDs! The miller, too, makes an appearance, though nobody wants to hear anything he has to say!
