The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Re-Imagines 101st Season!

TCTC_Four SeasonsA season where you press PLAY to see the play

Cincinnati – The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) originally announced that Disney Channel’s smash hit movie musical, Disney’s Descendants, would open the theatre’s 2020-21 MainStage Season, followed by ELF THe Musical Jr., Doctor Dolittle Jr., and the world-premiere musical, Princess & Frog.  For the safety of patrons and artists, and anticipated restrictions for large gatherings, the nation’s oldest children’s theatre has decided to postpone these productions to the 2021-22 season.

Fear not! TCT has announced plans to replace the shows with four productions guaranteed to wow young and old alike, while keeping safety a priority. The new line-up includes in-person performances for those who would like to experience a socially-distanced live show, and digital experiences for those who would prefer to enjoy the production from the comfort of their home.

TCT’s Producing Artistic Director, Roderick Justice, says: “While we are sad Season 101 will be postponed, we are elated to announce a new re-imagined season, keeping audiences and artists safe while keeping mission in focus. As a theatre for young people which normally serves over 200,000 each season, we had to make some dramatic changes and start from scratch to curate a new season of titles which also grants us the license to stream the productions digitally.”

TCT’s first three MainStage shows will take place on the Ralph and Patricia Corbett SHOWTIME STAGE at TCT’s Red Bank location. Seating will be very limited, demand is high, and performances are expected to sell out quickly.

In April 2021, last season’s postponed TCT production of ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL JR. will take place at THE TAFT THEATRE in Downtown Cincinnati. TCT will follow all State and CDC guidelines with reduced capacity seating models and safety protocols in place as necessary.

“Accessibility to our programming is incredibly important right now,” says Kim Kern, TCT’s Managing Director and CEO. “The stories we tell give families hope and joy as we look to the future.  Due to the limited capacity of our Showtime Stage, TCT’s first three productions will be available to purchase digitally though our website in partnership with Broadway on Demand.”

Tralen Doler, Vice President of Broadway On Demand says, “Broadway On Demand is thrilled to have TCT joining our platform. Their innovation and dedication to creating art in these times is inspiring and exactly what we hope for in a partner. We look forward to sharing their thrilling work with viewers around the world.”

In addition, the TCT Creative Team has been working diligently to create and debut new safety protocols to protect the audience, staff, and the actors on stage.  Nose and mouth coverings will be integrated into many costumes and pre-recorded vocal amplification will be used to reduce the amount of respiration created by actors during a performance.

“The theatre has been using masks since 600BC!” Justice says. “I’m actually quite excited to wrap our imaginations around some creative storytelling solutions to provide unique theatre utilizing mask work and pantomime!”

The shows featured in TCT’s reimagined MainStage Season include:

Cincinnati Ballet Announces Updates to the 2020-2021 Season

CB_2020-2021 Season logoReimagined season includes new choreography and classic favorites

CINCINNATI, OH (August 10, 2020) – Cincinnati Ballet is excited to announce our modified 2020-2021 Season. While this unexpected schedule looks different than first envisioned, it is a season of surprises sure to delight dance lovers in the region. When the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the remainder of the 2019-2020 Season in March and April, Cincinnati Ballet did not anticipate programming changes well into our upcoming season. However, Cincinnati Ballet’s dedicated staff pivoted quickly to reimagine the 2020-2021 season with varied performance options. “The health and safety of our dancers, staff, patrons, and community remain our top priority,” said Scott Altman, Cincinnati Ballet CEO. “As we continue to navigate the unique challenges of social distancing, our commitment to health and safety has guided us as we created a season that delivers the world-class dance you expect from Cincinnati Ballet. We have had to make some difficult decisions, but we know, thanks to our community’s deep commitment to the arts and Cincinnati Ballet, we are safeguarding the future of our organization.” Cincinnati Ballet has adapted the 2020-2021 Season based on recommendations from government and health officials and in line with sister organizations both regionally and nationally.

Cincinnati Ballet invites you to come celebrate dance and our vibrant community next month as we kick off the season with a free, socially distanced production in partnership with Cincinnati Parks at the P & G Pavilion September 25-27. This program will feature the return of our dancers with outdoor performances showcasing selections of favorite solos and pas de deux from our rich repertoire. In November, Cincinnati Ballet will present an intimate workshop performance. “Right now, our artists are busy creating thoughtful pieces for this performance,” said Artistic Director Victoria Morgan. “Our dancers and artistic staff are developing a celebratory program. The return of this art form to an indoor stage with audiences and dancers socially distanced will proudly highlight the talents of your Cincinnati Ballet artists, as dancers, as choreographers, and innovators of our time. While the world is an unsettled place, we are focused and moving forward in our mission to share the love and healing power of dance with our community.”  As we move into December, keeping in mind appropriate social distancing, we will offer a re-imagined Nutcracker presented by Frisch’s Big Boy in an hour-long program in the Music Hall Ballroom, December 17-23.

Our second half of the season begins in a NEW and surprising way. For the first time in our history, The Kaplan New Works Series moves from the Jarson-Kaplan Theater at Aronoff Center to Springer Auditorium at Music Hall. This audience favorite will replace Jewels previously scheduled in February. To highlight the intimate setting for these contemporary world premieres, Cincinnati Ballet will perform New Works like never seen before in front of the proscenium, performing in the space you would typically see Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra musicians perform. New Works as always continues to highlight the raw, powerful athleticism of dance. In this series we reflect on these unique times, addressing today’s challenges with gravity, humor, and hope.  To celebrate springtime, we have shifted our Family Series regional premiere of Snow White from February to April. This treasured fairytale will showcase Cincinnati Ballet Second Company and Otto M. Budig Academy students and for the first time, will feature live actors narrating the story, April 8-18. April will also feature a mixed-repertoire program, Bold Moves Plus. The anchor will be the return of Ohad Naharin’s wildly popular, Minus 16. Artistically, Bold Moves Plus will serve as a precursor to our inaugural festival which will debut in the 2021-2022 Season and will celebrate legendary contemporary choreography. Artistic Director Victoria Morgan’s whimsical Cinderella is now slated to close the 2020-2021 Season with a two-week engagement June 10-20 at Aronoff Center. As audiences enjoy the magical Cinderella, Cincinnati Ballet will also be celebrating the opening of the new Cincinnati Ballet Margaret & Michael Valentine Center for Dance in Walnut Hills. Cincinnati Ballet’s new home is slated to open in Summer 2021.

Season Update from Sunset Players and The Arts Center at Dunham

SSP_logoOpening of Sunset Players and the Arts Center at Dunham FREE Family Fun Series 2020/21 seasons are on hold and events will be resumed when safely possible.

The well-being of our patrons, performers and volunteers continues to be our utmost priority. Our Board continues to monitor the local COVID-19 situation as well as the federal, state and local mandates regarding indoor theatrical performances. Due to the uncertainty on when indoor theatre will be able to resume, we find it necessary to announce a delay in opening our 2020/21 season until early 2021.

Additional Information:

We were unable to complete the final weekend of the run of our award winning musical PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES in March and cancelled our spring production of LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, the final show of our 40th anniversary season.

Those who purchased tickets for PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES as well as Season Pass holders who were unable to attend a performance of it and/or the cancelled spring production should have been contacted directly regarding refunds, exchanges and other options. If we somehow overlooked contacting you, please call Deb Case, our Season Ticket Chair, at (513) 418-1644 ASAP.

It was our plan to roll over the final production of last season to open the next one, which no longer appears possible. We will not be selling season passes for 2020/21 until it can be determined when and what will be possible.

We thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate these murky waters. We will continue to assess all options and inform you of any additional changes as they occur.  Look to your email and our social media channels for future updates, and most importantly, continue to take all available precautions to stay as safe as possible during this challenging time.
