Michael Shooner and the cast of SEMINAR.

LCT Panelists have recognized the Falcon Theatre’s production of  SEMINAR with a 4 Star Rating.

SEMINAR was praised as “a delight and a high point for Falcon. They had everything moving and going in the right direction with this production.” Panelists praised the entire ensemble for making their characters “endearing and amusing”. Michael Shooner as Leonard and Ian Kramer as Martin were particularly impressive. Shooner was “outstanding as the writing seminar teacher. He is like a bull on stage, running over the student’s egos”. Kramer was “equal parts sardonic, rebellious, and naïve–he perfectly fit the part.”

SEMINAR is a tightly written character study by Theresa Rebeck, filled with biting humor, which follows four eager students as they vie for the approval of a writing professor with a reputation for being incredibly demanding.

SEMINAR continues through February 15th. Tickets can be purchased at www.falcontheater.net.

ETC’s TRIBES Earns 4.5 Star LCT Rating

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre’s production of Tribes with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Tribes centers around Billy, the deaf son of a fiercely outspoken family obsessed with self-expression. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. However, when he finds a new family in the deaf community, tensions reach an all-time high in this touching play about membership in your tribe.

Panelists described Tribes as “an important play…another coup for the Ensemble theatre and I am sure people will flock to this excellent production.” Actors Dale Dymkoski, as Billy, and Kelly Mengelkoch, as Sylvia were praised in their leading roles: “They were able to convey such emotion with few or no words and I was just mesmerized in their comfort level… Mengelkoch is an actress at the top of her game, giving a wonderfully nuanced and delicate performance.” Panelists were impressed with Michael Evan Haney’s direction: “Great ensembles are not created by accident. No matter how talented the individual actors may be, it takes a skilled director to blend and mold an ensemble of this caliber. Michael Evan Haney once again proves that he is one of the best directors in Cincinnati.”

Panelists also singled out Brian Mehring for his scenic design and Fitz Patton for sound design. “Brian Mehring’s set and lighting turned a normal house into something spectacular… meticulous to detail and creative.” “The sound design was intriguing, especially in conveying the silence that Billy hears, or the buzzing of his hearing aids….exceptional, real and believable.”

Tribes continues through February 16th. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

NKU’s EMERGENCY Receives LCT 5 Star Recommendation

NKU_logoPanelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized EMERGENCY, presented by the NKU department of Theatre and Dance and the African American Programs and Services with a 5 Star Recommendation.

In EMERGENCY, a slave ship emerges out of the Hudson River in front of the Statue of Liberty sending NY into a whirlwind of emotion and exploration in this explosive solo tour de force featuring slam poetry, multi-character transformation, and song. Deondra Kamau Means portrays a cast of 27 characters originated by Daniel Beaty. Through the characters’ individual responses to this surreal happening and their varied testimonies on identity and personal freedom, EMERGENCY weaves a stirring commentary on what it is to be human and on the longing to be free.

Panelists found this production to be “a moving, gripping performance painting the many aspects of race issues is America” and praised director Daryl Harris’s inspired vision for the piece. Of Deondra Means, panelists wrote: “A very experienced storyteller, Mr. Means was able to envelope the audience in the truth, joy, and anger of these various African American characters who spoke volumes of truth.”

Emergency continues through February 2 Tickets can be obtained online at www.theatre.nku.edu or through the NKU box office.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

TOMORROW’S STARS

FINALS COMPETITION AND AWARDS CEREMONY

The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is proud to present the 2014 Overture Awards Scholarship Competition – the largest locally-run arts scholarship competition in the country. The Overture Awards annually provides a $3,500 scholarship to six area high school students for education and training expenses, with 18 finalists each winning a $750 scholarship.

The Overture Awards Finals Competition and Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Winners will be announced immediately following the competition.

This year, 466 students were nominated by their schools to compete in one of six artistic disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. The Overture Awards was developed to recognize, encourage, and reward excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. It also provides students an opportunity to share their talents and interests among their peers in a supportive environment outside of their individual schools. There are three levels of competition: Regionals, Semi-Finals, and Finals.

The Overture Awards Regional Competitions were held on January 11 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Immanuel United Methodist Church (Lakeside Park, KY), Saint Ursula Academy, University of Cincinnati – Blue Ash College, and Xavier University. The top 20 percent of competitors in each discipline advanced to the Semi-Finals, which were held at the Aronoff Center on January 17 and 18. Twenty-four finalists (four in each discipline) will compete in the Finals Competition at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater on March 1.

Now in its 18th year, The Overture Awards was launched in 1996 by the Cinergy Foundation (now Duke Energy) and Leadership Cincinnati (a program of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce). The Overture Awards is funded and administered by the Cincinnati Arts Association, which operates and manages the Aronoff Center and Music Hall. The Overture Awards also relies on hundreds of volunteers from the community who help raise funds, adjudicate and manage the competitions, and nurture the program.

SBP Announce 2014/2015 Season

SHOWBIZ PLAYERS ANNOUNCE 2014-2015 SEASON

SBPREEFER MADNESS
9/19-28/2014
Directed by Adam Drake

Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won’t be able to resist the spoofy fun of REEFER MADNESS. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like ‘Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime’ and the Vegas-style ‘Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,’ featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger performers and audiences.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY
5/29-6/7/2015
Directed by Bunny Arszman

The ADDAMS FAMILY was created by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice and Drama Desk Award winner Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party). It features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

All performances will be held at the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, 1028 Scott Blvd, Covington, KY 41011. For more information check our website at www.showbizplayers.com. If you have any question, call Bunny Arszman at 513-325-7842.
