Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Announces Capital Project Update

CINCINNATI – Artistic Director Blake Robison revealed late yesterday new developments in Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s capital building project to replace the current Marx Theatre with a brand-new mainstage theatre complex. The plan was first announced in February 2017. During a meeting with civic leaders at the Queen City Club, an updated plan for the proposed mainstage theatre complex was outlined, and it will allow performances to continue on-site during construction. The new mainstage theatre complex will cost $39.5 million.

Initially, the Playhouse anticipated that performances would have to take place off-site in order to build the new mainstage on the site of the Marx Theatre. The new approach created with project partners BHDP Architecture, Messer Construction and TriVersity Construction shifts the new theatre’s footprint to the north, allowing performances to continue in the Eden Park location during construction.

“This is a huge positive for our patrons,” said Robison. “Not only will they be able to enjoy productions in our familiar location, but also they’ll witness the creation of the new mainstage as it’s being built.”

The Playhouse, its Board of Trustees, the Cincinnati Park Board and the design and construction partners are working to understand and address the implications of this shift in strategy. The construction timetable and building project design are not final, but the current projected opening date will fall in late 2021. The Playhouse anticipates announcing the finalized construction timetable, projected opening date and finished project designs later this year.

“As you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts,” said Robison. “We are going to take our time and do this thing right. Our brilliant design and construction team is dedicated to fully analyzing the plan. We all feel strongly that its huge positives outweigh a slightly longer wait for the final project design and our new mainstage.”

Fundraising for the capital campaign is on track. “With three leadership gifts and the committed support of 100 percent of our Board, we are well on our way,” said Woody Taft, Campaign Chairman. “We’ve raised $12.9 million, which includes $9.3 million toward the cost of the new building and an additional $3.6 million for endowment.”

In 2017, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park announced a capital campaign to replace the current Marx Theatre with a brand-new mainstage theatre complex. The building project will feature a new, and even more intimate, mainstage theatre with support facilities including new dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, green room, costume shop and backstage areas. The new theatre will enhance audience experience with better comfort, sightlines, acoustics and entry/exit. It will expand what can be done on stage with state-of-the-art theatre technology.

No major improvements have been made to the Marx Theatre since its construction nearly 50 years ago in 1968. It is the oldest unrenovated mainstage facility at any regional theatre in the country. The Playhouse’s last capital campaign was from 1994 to 1996 and culminated in a renovation of the public and production support areas in 1997, but did not include any significant improvements to the two theatres.

“We view this as a civic project that will bring benefits to the whole region,” Taft said. “The Playhouse already provides our city with significant economic impact and national recognition that helps bring people to live and work here. The new, state-of-the-art mainstage will build on the Playhouse’s contributions and success.”

Winner of two Tony awards, the Playhouse is the region’s preeminent professional theatre with unequaled access to the nation’s finest actors, directors and designers.

“The new theatre complex positions the Playhouse for the future,” explained Robison. “It will enhance our patrons’ experience and give our artists the modern technologies they need to produce top-notch theatre here in Cincinnati for generations to come.”

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

CCM Mainstage Opera Presents Puccini’s SUOR ANGELICA and GIANNI SCHICCHI

CCM_Suor Angelica and Gianni SchicchiCCM pairs two of Puccini’s most popular operas SUOR ANGELICA and GIANNI SCHICCHI for its next Mainstage production on March 22-25, 2018!

CINCINNATI, OH—The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s Sesquicentennial Mainstage Series presents a pair of operas with music by Giacomo Puccini and librettos by Giovacchino Forzano on March 22-25, 2018 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Suor Angelica’s tragic story focuses on a young nun who is serving penance for conceiving an illegitimate child, while Gianni Schicchi is a comedic opera about a family who tries to alter a large inheritance to their favor.

CCM graduate students are directing each production; Meredith Kitz directs Suor Angelica, while Andreas Hager directs Gianni Schicchi. CCM Director of Orchestra Studies Mark Gibson conducts the opera double bill.

Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi work well together because they are so different,” Hager says. “The former takes religion and social order very seriously, while the latter completely skewers the awful and rich Donati family.”

“In Suor Angelica, God is the moral compass, but Gianni Schicchi is about flesh and desire, with both the good and bad urges in every human.”

The unique challenges of Gianni Schicchi are twofold, according to Hager; even though the opera is only about an hour long, it is vocally demanding of its leading singers, and those who play members of the Donati family music be completely coordinated with one another for long periods of time. In this way, the family acts as one large, nearly farcical character.

“We’re lucky at CCM to have students with the musical training to negotiate the complicated ensembles and the physical and mental stamina to execute precise comedic timing, often running around the stage at full speed — literally like chickens at one moment,” Hager says.

“The cast has been so supportive of each other, and they have been coming to rehearsal with a complete willingness to play. For me, that’s the essential ingredient to creating a Gianni Schicchi that is funny, moving and perhaps even a bit profound.”

Suor Angelica will last 1 hour and will be followed by a 15-minute intermission. Gianni Schicchi will last 1 hour.

URINETOWN The Musical to Open at Footlighters, Inc.

FLI_Urinetown logoThe Footlighters will open Urinetown, The Musical on May 3rd, 2018. This production, directed by former Showbiz Players’ President Bunny Arszman, will take place at The Stained Glass Theatre, 802 York Street, Newport, Kentucky. A hilarious satire that earned three Tony Awards, Urinetown is set in a Gotham-like city where a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, Urinetown catapults the comedic romp into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

This production marks the first time that Bunny Arszman has directed outside of Showbiz Players. Ms. Arszman ran Showbiz Players for almost 30 years up until last spring when the group performed their last show, the critically acclaimed The Civil War. Footlighters is ecstatic to have her sharing her directorial vision and talents for their production of Urinetown. Longtime Footlighter Gary Rogers is also reprising his role as Officer Lockstock, for which he won the 2006 Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Performances: Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5 at 8pm, Sunday, May 6 at 2pm, Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12 at 8pm, Sunday, May 13 at 2pm, Wednesday- Saturday, May 16-19 at 8pm.

Tickets: $22 each, and are available at (859) 652-3849 or FootlightersTickets@gmail.com.

The Footlighters, Inc. has been producing quality community theater shows in the Greater Cincinnati area for over 54 years. The group was established in 1963 by a small group of community theater volunteers who wanted to bring theater opportunities to the west side of Cincinnati. In 1987, the group bought the Salem United Methodist Church in Newport and transformed it into The Stained Glass Theatre. The theater is on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a Kentucky landmark.
