A CHRISTMAS CAROL Comes to Life November 21 – December 29

The beloved, iconic story will be performed Nov. 21 through Dec. 29 in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre. (Opening night is Nov. 23.)

More than 600,000 people have enjoyed the timeless classic at the Playhouse over the past 27 years. An immediate hit when Dickens wrote it in 1843, A CHRISTMAS CAROL is often credited for revitalizing the celebration of Christmas as we know it today.

“Thousands of families return each year to the Playhouse to make A CHRISTMAS CAROL a part of their holiday traditions,” explains Blake Robison, artistic director. “The enduring message of A CHRISTMAS CAROL helps to make it one of the Playhouse’s most popular productions each season and a perfect way to introduce children to the joys of theatre.”

Adapted by Howard Dallin, Dickens’ narrative comes to vivid life with spectacular effects and hundreds of costumes that illuminate Ebenezer Scrooge’s time-traversing pilgrimage with the spirits one magical Christmas Eve. From his kind-hearted sister Fan and first love Belle to his generous employer Fezziwig and humble clerk Bob Cratchit, Scrooge is repeatedly shown the saving grace of love and concern for humanity.

Bruce Comer returns to fill Ebenezer Scrooge’s miserly shoes for the 14th time this season, the longest run among the four actors who have played the role, and new for 2018, his son, Charlie, will portray Scrooge as a young adult. Michael Evan Haney is the director of the production.

All show times for A CHRISTMAS CAROL are at 2 p.m. for matinees and 7 p.m. for evening performances to accommodate families with children. Please note the earlier curtain time. There will be no performances on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and selected weeknights in early December.

Hit Musical GODSPELL Continues CCM Studio Series

CCM_Godspell logo2

CCM’s 2018-19 Studio Series continues with Stephen Schwartz’s first major musical GODSPELL. Featuring an eclectic blend of chart-topping songs, the 1971 musical runs Nov. 8-10, 2018, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater.

Directed and choreographed by Professor Katie Johannigman with musical direction by Professor Stephen Goers, GODSPELL shares the story of Jesus’ life based on the gospel according to St. Matthew through comedy, improvisation and hit musical numbers. The music ranges in style from pop to vaudeville and includes hits like “Day by Day,” “Learn Your Lessons Well” and “All for the Best.”

The musical features a small cast who will employ audience participation to illustrate well-known parables of Jesus, who is cast as a woman in CCM’s production. In a show full of surprises, Johannigman is excited for audiences to experience all that the show has to offer:

“We’ve created an immersive theater environment for the audience to be a part of the show that I think they will enjoy,” she says. “We have a killer cast, including our Jesus, who is taking a different approach to the role.”

GODSPELL is heavily inspired by the “peace and love” culture of the 1970s but its themes are still applicable today, Johannigman adds. “New York City in 1971 was ripe and ready for a show like GODSPELL to come in and speak about love, acceptance and community — 2018 could use the exact same lessons. We are drawing from a lot of current issues and themes of our time to spread a message of joy, love and acceptance to all.”

Admission to CCM’s production of GODSPELL is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5. Visit the CCM Box Office or call 513-556-4183 to reserve. Limit two tickets per order.

Jane Austen Classic Comes to Life at NKU SOTA

NKU_Pride and Prejudice logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Jane Austen’s classic novel PRIDE AND PREJUDICE will be on stage at Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts, running Nov. 29-Dec. 9 at NKU’s Corbett Theatre.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a refreshingly fast-paced and engaging new adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel involving manners, courtship and relationships. When the independent-minded Elizabeth Bennet meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, all feelings of attraction are muted by his pride and her prejudice. As their worlds keep colliding, their attraction increases and the sparks begin to fly in directions no one could have predicted. Arguably the most beloved of Austen’s works, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE comes to life with all the wit and romance from the classic novel.

Those who love reading, language, the classics, and romantic stories will love this show – especially since it’s a Jane Austen classic. The adaptation by Jon Jory revolves around love and family. The story elements of how different life was back in the Georgian era and what is still similar today should relate to audience members about themselves and the world they live in.

“It’s more of a reflection on where we’ve come from, how much we’ve changed, and whether or not we have more to go,” said director Corrie Danieley. “Elizabeth stands up for herself and goes against what society expects – she is quite a modern woman. She doesn’t choose the man just for his money and security – she chooses love.”

The NKU cast features Kevin Birdwhistell (Mr. Bennet), Makenzie Ruff (Lydia Bennet/Dance Captain), Faith Von Handorf (Georgiana Darcy), Rachel Kazee (Elizabeth Bennet), Melody Lindsey (Mary Bennet), Courtney Mulford (Charlotte Lucas), Piper Bates (Jane Bennet), Sara Cox (Kitty Bennet), Katherine Salee (Mrs. Bennet), Isaiah Reaves (Mr. Bingley), Alexander Slade (Colonel Fitzwilliam), Tyler Rosenblatt (Mr. Darcy), Ben Eglian (Mr. Lucas), James Dawson (Mr. Gardiner), Randolph Geers (Mr. William Collins), Victoria Avery (Miss Caroline Bingley), Zoe Brooks-Jeffiers (Mrs. Gardiner), Logan Weinfurtner (Lt. George Wickham), Amellia Adkins (Lady Catherine de Bourgh), Mikinley Lustenberg (Housekeeper), Mattison Sullivan (Dancer/Officer/Manservant/Dance Captain). The show is directed by Corrie Danieley. Other creative team members include Ronnie Chamberlain (Costume Design), Terry Powell (Light Design), Jamey Strawn (Sound Design), Rob Kerby (Technical Director), Brian Robertson (Production Manager), Emily Borst (Assistant Director), Alex Bellocq (Choreographer), and Mike King (Dialect Coach). Karen Glass (Scenic Design) is supported by an award from the Tom and Christine Neyer Family Visiting Artist. The Stage Manager is Shauna Nelson and Assistant Stage Manager is Lindsey Risch. Special thanks to Cincinnati English Country Dancers and Dina Schmid with Queen City Etiquette.
