Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Presents an Electrifying MACBETH That Explores the Dark Intersection of Mind Control and Ambition

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s highly anticipated production, set in the early days of the Cold War, begins with a sold-out opening weekend

Cincinnati, February 27, 2025 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is thrilled to present Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a chilling and electrifying adaptation that blurs the boundaries between free will and control, playing February 28 – March 23, 2025. This production is directed by one of CSC’s Artistic Associates, Christopher V. Edwards and features an ensemble cast of 16 actors. Macbeth is generously sponsored by Monteverdi Tuscany, Blank Rome, and Messer.

Set during the early days of the Cold War, this reimagining of Macbeth delves into ambition, mind control, and psychological manipulation. When enigmatic witches unveil a prophecy of power, Macbeth and his calculating wife spiral into a ruthless pursuit of dominance. As paranoia mounts and reality fractures, their descent into madness becomes a chilling exploration of how far the human mind can be pushed—and who is truly pulling the strings. This electrifying adaptation blurs the boundaries between free will and control, immersing audiences in a world where the edge of insanity is closer than it appears.

Christopher V. Edwards is returning to the CSC stage to direct Macbeth. In addition to his role as a CSC Artistic Associate, his previous directing credits at Cincy Shakes include: A Raisin in the Sun, Othello, and Fences. Edwards is also the current Artistic Director at the Actors’ Shakespeare Project in Boston. “In the corridors of power, a covert operation codenamed “MK-Beth” unfolds, blending Shakespearean tragedy with Cold War paranoia. This is all used as a jumping off point for the production.” Says director Christopher V. Edwards. Inspired by Mk-Ultra and similar Cold War conspiracies, Edwards has created a mind-bending Macbeth that investigates the dangers of ambition and power grounded in history. “In my experience with Macbeth productions and analyses, I’ve noticed a tendency to emphasize the play’s supernatural elements. While these dark, seemingly omnipotent forces do create a palpable sense of fear and loss of control over our lives and destinies, I believe their impact is less significant than the realities of human capacity for evil.”

The cast includes many familiar faces. Darnell Pierre Benjamin plays Macbeth with Hayley Guthrie as Lady Macbeth. Sara Mackie, Elizabeth Chinn Molloy, and Aiden Sims play the three witches and Kelly Mengelkoch plays Hecate as well as the Porter and Seyton. Jasimine Bouldin, Billy Chace, Jim Hopkins, Patrick Earl Phillips, Sylvester Little Jr., and Brent Vimtrup return to the CSC stage, filling out the ensemble. Jason Coffenberry and Dani Grace Nissen make their first appearance in a main-stage production after both performing in previous educational and park tours. Adah Mosher and Ceridwyn Guthrie will both be making their CSC debuts as Fleance and Little Duff respectively.

The creative team features many returning and guest designers. Robert Carlton Stimmel returns as Projections Designer with Rainy Edwards acting as Associate Projections Designer. Jon Savage sets the stage with his eerie scenic design, creating the setting of MK-Beth. Nia Safarr Banks’ costume design establishes the early 60’s time period. Lighting Designer Watson and Sound Designer Zack Bennett help further establish the sinister feelings associated with the Scottish play. Gina Cerimele-Mechley returns as intimacy and fight director, guiding the cast through the many murders of Macbeth. Macbeth will be stage managed by Cole Sweasy with Assistant Stage Manager Rowan Rozzi.

The beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof is full of classic tunes like “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.” The creators of the show—Jerry Bock (music), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics), and Joseph Stein (book)—were so prolific that they also produced many songs that did not make the final cut. Evans Mirageas and musical guests will serve as guides through the forgotten songs of Fiddler on the Roof, including hits from the show as we know it today and surprises from the archives.

April 10, 2025, at 7:30 p.m.

With rare video footage of the creative process and live musical performances, Solomon and Whiteley will share behind-the-scenes stories alongside excerpts from Fiddler’s beloved score. Whiteley will also offer a fascinating glimpse into “the songs that got away”—selections originally written for the show that were cut prior to its Broadway opening.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s CAMELOT

3/5 – Due to the great demand for seats, we’ve added extra performances to Camelot. Instead of ending on April 6, this mythical journal will now run through April 13.

Experience a soaring, tighter Camelot at The Human Race Theatre Company

David Lee’s focused adaptation breathes new life into Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s beloved Camelot. At its heart lies the eternal triangle of Arthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot, their story told through the musical’s most memorable songs. A live ensemble band helps the classic score soar as the King, Queen, and Knights of the Round Table perform cherished numbers ranging from tender ballads like “If Ever I Would Leave You” and “I Loved You Once in Silence” to rousing favorites such as “The Lusty Month of May” and the unforgettable title song. This bold remake of the 1960 classic ensures audiences will depart with smiles on their faces and soaring melodies stuck in their minds.

“Arthurian legends date back to 300-500 CE, as Christianity and pagan belief systems were clashing, and different political factions were warring for power,” notes Emily N. Wells, Artistic Director of The Human Race Theatre Company. “I’ve been enthralled by the legends for a long time and find that we can all relate to the eternal quest for a round table – a symbol of an ideal world where all are welcome.”

Ian Axness, Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Resident Music Director at University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music, provides musical direction and Kiersten Farmer (Dayton Playhouse Joseph…) choreographs.  Wells directs the eight-person cast of revelers: Justin King, Jason Slattery, Tai Rosenblatt, Christian Hall and Shannon Lane, with Adam Thatcher as Arthur/Reveler 6, Aleah Vassell as Guenevere/Reveler 7, and Trevor Bunce as Lancelot/Reveler 8.

FHSD Film Program Thrives with Premiere of 2025 Film, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

The Film students of Anderson and Turpin High Schools are collaborating once again on a short film, building on their past experience and success. “Behind Closed Doors” premieres on March 14 and 15 at 7:00 pm at Anderson High school. The thriller tells the story of Kate, whose friend Zach has something mysterious hidden in his basement.

This is the second year that Turpin and Anderson Film students have combined for the film project, including both Directors, Turpin senior Mary Harpring and Anderson senior Benjamin Hartong. In 2024, Hartong was Assistant Director and Harpring was an actor, so their expertise covers all aspects of the process.

Harpring also wrote the screenplay. She began working on the story and script in early 2024 with both Anderson Film Teacher Chad Weddle and Turpin Theatre teacher Joey Loebker.

“I was excited to begin working with Mary,” said Weddle. “She has written things in the past for collaborative projects, and I knew she had both the talent and skill to handle this difficult process.”

This is Turpin Senior Joshua Yamaguchi’s third year composing the score for the annual film projects. He began with the 2023 film, “The Whisper House,” which went on to win a national Student Film award from NATAS, the organization which organizes the Emmy® Awards.

Tickets for the premiere of “Behind Closed Doors” are $10 and can be purchased by visiting AndersonTheatre.com or at the door before each showing.
