NKU SOTA Streams Dark Comedy GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES

NKU_Gruesome Playground Injuries logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts presents Rajiv Joseph’s dark comedy “Gruesome Playground Injuries” to continue the 2020-21 Theatre + Dance academic season. “Gruesome Playground Injuries” will be available on-demand through ShowTix4U May 21-25, 2021.

“Just like our two main characters in the play, our real-life theatrical experience has been damaged. I didn’t want to hide the fact that we have an empty house with no audience members, rather I wanted every part of the theatre space and theatrical process exposed for its beauty and simplicity,” said director Corrie Danieley. “The aim of this pandemic show experience was to film a theatre piece without hiding behind smoke and mirrors. We are story makers. We tell stories about our human experiences, our connections and disconnections, and about our common joys and struggles.”

  • What: “Gruesome Playground Injuries” by Rajiv Joseph
  • When: May 21-25, 2021
  • Where: Online at ShowTix4U
  • Admission: $4 for On-Demand 48-hour rental

Two childhood friends, Doug and Kayleen, intersect at the most bizarre intervals. These scar-crossed lovers meet at different times of their lives, brought together by injury, heartbreak, and their self-destructive tendencies. With great compassion and humor, Rajiv Joseph (Broadway’s “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo”) creates a compelling and unconventional love story about the intimacy between two people when they allow their defenses to drop and their wounds to show.

The NKU cast features Timothy Belton, Natalie Hayslett, and Sabrina Mack. Norse Media and Chris Strobel graciously provided filming and editing support during the production process.

“We are in the middle of a world-wide pandemic, so I embraced this fact and filmed this piece of theatre reflecting where we are,” said director Corrie Danieley. “Although wearing masks and social distancing was quite challenging, it is my hope that the story shone through and speaks to our connected human experiences of pain, hope, and love.” Creating theatre with COVID restrictions required the team to think outside the box and develop creative solutions. This primary goal was to safely create theatre while incorporating new experiences. The entire process was in compliance with the Norse Nine guidelines.

About NKU Founded in 1968, we are a growing metropolitan university of more than 15,000 students served by more than 2,000 faculty and staff on a thriving suburban campus near Cincinnati. Located in the quiet suburb of Highland Heights, Kentucky—just seven miles southeast of Cincinnati—we have become a leader in Greater Cincinnati and Kentucky by providing a private school education for a fraction of the cost. While we are one of the fastest growing universities in Kentucky, our professors still know our students’ names. For more information, visit nku.edu.

TWITTERHATED, A New Play, Opens at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival June 5th

CFF21_TwitterHated with Fringe logoSand Catcher Collaborations is presenting the new play Twitterhated, which will open at the outdoor stages of The Know theatre on 1120 Jackson Street, Cincinnati, Ohio on June 5th at 2:45pm.

Show description: Reeling after a racist macroaggression by her boyfriend’s sister, Amelia finds herself lost in the Twitterverse. When social media bleeds into real life, she’s forced to reckon with who she wants to be – and how she wants to communicate. Twitterhated explores social media’s impact on in-person relationships and difficult conversations.

About the company: Sand Catcher Collaborations is Director Katie Baskerville and Actor/Playwright Julie Locker. Sand Catcher sees intersectional stories as grains of sand — try as theatres might to represent their entire communities, holding every grain of sand in their palms, some stories will inevitably slip through their fingers. Sand Catcher seeks to catch those grains of sand to see those who feel invisible, hear those who feel unheard, and boldly tell stories that go untold. Whether producing a series of monologues, a staged reading, a fully-produced play, or an immersive theatrical experience, Sand Catcher aims to grapple with topical issues affecting our community.

Twitterhated is Sand Catcher’s inaugural performance. Actor/Playwright Julie Locker pulls from her experience as a biracial woman, exposing the limits of the construct of race as it applies both to white supremacist and anti-racist movements when viewed through the lens of social media conversations. Not only is this heretofore an untold story in Cincinnati, but it is also presented in a style rarely seen in the city, using ensemble-based movement to create the world of the Twitterverse. Director Katie Baskerville built this world by asking, “How can we tell this story most authentically to the experience of the project?” For Twitterhated, the answer was using Viewpoints, a technique of movement composition that acts as a medium for thinking about and acting upon movement, gesture, and creative space.

Ticket price is $10. Detailed information, including show times and ticket purchasing, can be found at www.cincyfringe.com/twitterhated. Show art by Ellyn Broderick.

Candid Conversation
Tuesday, June 8, 2021

CINCINNATI, OH – Step Afrika!’s powerful, pulsing, world premiere piece, Stono, highlights the spirit of resistance and activism of a part of American history that has often been overlooked. The Cincinnati Arts Association is pleased to present this 30-minute virtual experience, which will be available for streaming June 5-18.

Access to the streamed performance of Stono and a live CANDID CONVERSATION via Zoom on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:30 PM with C. Brian Williams, the Founder and Artistic Director of Step Afrika!, and a variety of local artists is on sale now at CincinnatiArts.org and (513) 621-ARTS [2787]. The virtual events may be purchased separately at $6.00 each or in combination for $10.00.

Stono spotlights the largest insurrection of enslaved Africans in North America on September 9, 1739, which began in South Carolina on the banks of the Stono River. Some 20 Africans marched south toward a promised freedom in Spanish Florida, waving flags, beating drums, and shouting “Liberty!” When Africans subsequently lost the right to use their drums, through The Negro Act of 1740, they began to use their bodies as percussive instruments in response, giving rise to ring shout, tap, hambone, and stepping. Stono is based on choreography and content from Step Afrika!’s feature-length production, Drumfolk, returning to stages Fall 2021.

About Step Afrika!
Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Under Mr. Williams’ leadership, stepping has evolved into one of America’s cultural exports, touring more than 50 countries across the globe. Step Afrika! now ranks as one of the top ten African-American dance companies in the United States. Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities, traditional West and Southern African dances, and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.

Step Afrika! performances are much more than dance shows; they integrate songs, storytelling, and humor. The blend of technique, agility, and pure energy makes each performance unique and leaves the audience with their hearts pounding. Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. The Company reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year through a 50-city tour of colleges and theatres, and performs globally as Washington, DC’s one and only Cultural Ambassador.

Step Afrika! has earned Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education (2005), Innovation in the Arts (2008), and Excellence in an Artistic Discipline (2012), and performed at the White House for President Barack Obama and the First Lady. Step Afrika! is featured prominently at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African-American History & Culture with the world’s first stepping interactive.
