SWEENEY TODD Postponed by Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre

GHCT_logoFrom Rhonda Lucas, director

GHCT’s production of SWEENEY TODD has been postponed until sometime next season. With a cast of 30 and an orchestra of at least 17, the growing omicron variant and the fact that audiences have not come back full force yet….it was just too big of a risk for health and financial reasons at this time.

Thx to all who expressed interest in helping with crew or interested in auditioning.

Hopefully we get to slay people and bake them in pies next year.

A comedic play, to be announced will be presented in the April slot.

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Postpones Dates for Remaining 2021-2022 Season

ETC_logo

(Cincinnati, OH) Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC) will be postponing its remaining 2021-2022 productions by a few weeks out of an abundance of caution and in anticipation of an increase of local COVID cases fueled by the Omicron variant and post-holiday surges. This includes Queen, an insightful drama about scientific integrity and bees, rescheduled for February 19–March 19, 2022; the double bill of I Shall Not Be Moved and Your Negro Tour Guide, about local Civil Rights pioneer Betty Daniels Rosemond and misguided notions of Black identity, respectively, moves to April 9–May 7, 2022; and Tiny Beautiful Things, a funny and deeply touching exploration of resilience, will play May 28–June 26, 2022.

About the Plays
ETC presents the new play that’s created quite a buzz, Queen by award-winning playwright Madhuri Shekar, for February 19–March 19, 2022. PhD candidates Sanam and Ariel have spent the better part of the last decade exhaustively researching vanishing bee populations across the globe. Just as these close friends are about to publish a career-defining paper, Sanam stumbles upon an error in their calculations, which could cause catastrophic damage to their reputations, careers, and friendship. Now, Sanam is confronted with an impossible choice: look the other way or stand by her principles and accept the consequences?

ETC is thrilled to present two one-act productions with the newly commissioned world premiere of I Shall Not Be Moved followed by the return of Your Negro Tour Guide, playing back-to-back April 9–May 7, 2022. The riveting play I Shall Not Be Moved is by Cincinnati native and emerging young playwright Isaiah Reaves. This one-woman show thrillingly recounts the story of Reaves’s grandmother, nationally recognized Civil Rights pioneer Betty Daniels Rosemond and her beautiful, horrifying, and trailblazing journey through the American South as one of the first Freedom Riders during the 1960s. Audiences far and wide will experience the internal conflicts and joys of a dark-skinned Black woman’s fearless battle for equity and equality.

The revised one-woman stage adaptation of Your Negro Tour Guide draws heavily from columns and National Public Radio commentaries collected in Kathy Y. Wilson’s book, Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths in Black & White based on her former CityBeat column. Throwing a glaring light on misguided notions of natural Black beauty, Black homophobia, intra-racial bigotry, and other cultural stereotypes, this play allows us, once and for all, to laugh at every secret we’ve held against and sideways glance we’ve cast at “The Other,” whoever she happens to be.

Based on the acclaimed book by Cheryl Strayed (author of the best-selling Wild), Tiny Beautiful Things, May 28–June 26, 2022, is a funny and deeply touching exploration of resilience following the then-struggling writer as she took over the unpaid, anonymous position of an advice columnist named Sugar. At first unsure of herself, she finds a way to weave her own life experiences together to help those seeking guidance for obstacles large and small. Brilliantly adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, the Academy Award-nominated writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this enrapturing and uplifting play surges with emotion and was described by Variety as “a theatrical hug in turbulent times.” Closing ETC’s 36th Season, Tiny Beautiful Things is about reaching out when you’re stuck, recovering when you’re broken, and finding the courage to ask the questions that are hardest to answer.

Regional Premiere of INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP Offers A Charmingly Nostalgic Look at 1970s Family Life

PIP_S2_Incident_Newsroom

CINCINNATI (Jan. 4, 2022) – Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park continues its season with the regional premiere of INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP by Seattle playwright Katie Forgette beginning on Jan. 29. The charming comedy recounts an unforgettable day in 1973 for the O’Sheas, a cash-strapped, Irish-Catholic family. Feb. 3 is opening night for the production, which runs through Feb. 27.

Told through the memory of 20-year-old Linda O’Shea, the play begins when the parish priest overhears Linda’s bawdy-but-accurate explanation of “the birds and the bees” to her younger sister, Becky. What follows is a fast-paced chain of events that’s both unexpected and hilarious.

The production was originally scheduled prior to the pandemic, but Producing Artistic Director Blake Robison, who helms the production, thinks the current timing is perfect. “People need to laugh – now more than ever,” he says. “And you can only laugh in the theatre with a large group of people. From what I’ve seen, our audiences are ready to come together, poke a little fun at themselves and share some hijinks.”

Like the Playhouse’s productions of Brighton Beach Memoirs and Over the Tavern, INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP is an entertaining family comedy that will keep audiences laughing from start to finish, whether they grew up Catholic or not. At the same time, Catholics – and anyone who grew up in the 1970s – will probably see aspects of themselves in the play.

Forgette, who was raised Catholic and attended parochial school, based the women at the center of the play – particularly matriarch Jo and her sister Terry – on the dedication and unflagged volunteerism of the mothers in their parish.

“In my day, the moms did the heavy lifting: tutoring, bake sales, Catholic Childhood Association, festivals, bazaars, fundraisers, caring for the sick, emergency daycare. The organization, set-up and clean-up for every celebration under the sun from baptism to death was handled by the ladies of the parish. And if a surprise pregnancy or scandal popped up, they handled that, too. Sometimes while balancing a baby on one hip and a bag of groceries on the other.”

INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP had its world premiere in 2019 at New York’s Chenango River Theatre and will appear on several stages this year after its regional premiere at the Playhouse.

“The O’Sheas are sort of Every Family in America,” Robison says. “They may be Catholic and they may be Irish, but they’re just like your family too.”
