Cincinnati, OH-The Walnut Hills High School Theatre Department is elated to be welcoming back live audiences to its 2021-2022 school year senior high musical, the regional high school premiere of The SpongeBob Musical.

Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy attempt to save the day, while Plankton cooks up another one of his evil schemes and attempts to thwart our heroes—until a most unexpected hero rises to take center stage.

Regarding the musical, director Mike Sherman says, “While this is certainly a fun show based on a cartoon loved by so many, it also has a really great message about friendship and community. In a very cynical time, this show brings a joyous message of hope and optimism.”

CSC presents August Wilson’s American Classic that celebrates the Blues and Black History

CINCINNATI (January 19, 2022) – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is proud to continue bringing August Wilson’s canon to life with this production of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” A part of Wilson’s American Century Cycle, a series of plays chronicling the Black experience throughout the 20th-century, the play focuses on Blues singer Ma Rainey in Chicago in the roaring twenties. This show’s design is generously sponsored by Judge Mark and Sue Ann Painter.

Candice Handy, CSC’s Director of Education, directs this production, which features a cast of 10 ensemble members. The design team features renowned artists, including scenic designer Tony Hardin, who has worked over 150 theatre and opera productions, and multi-award-winning costume designer Daryl Harris. Yemi Oyediran, a local Blues musician and music producer, serves as the production’s music director and composer.

The “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” cast embodies Wilson’s words, immersing themselves in Chicago during the blistering 1927 summer. The production features Torie Wiggins as the titular Ma Rainey, artfully fictionalizing the real-life Blues singer. Torie was last seen at CSC in “Romeo and Juliet” and in August Wilson’s “Fences” at CSC in 2019. The cast also includes resident ensemble members who frequently appear at CSC with Geoffrey Warren Barnes II, who last appeared in “Every Christmas Story Ever Told” and “Romeo and Juliet” and Crystian Wiltshire, who last appeared in “Romeo and Juliet.” Crystian has also recently joined Cincinnati Shakespeare as its new Associate Artistic Director.  CSC also welcomes back “ranney” who has performed at CSC in the 2020 production of “All the Way” and as the featured actor in August Wilson’s “Fences” at CSC in 2019, alongside several of his “Ma Rainey” cast mates.

In celebration of CSC’s production of August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” CSC welcomes Dr. Sandra G. Shannon, the leading authority on August Wilson, for a lecture on the play and the contextual framework, including the role of Blues women, the history of the Blues, and the cultural impact today. The open-to-the-public event will be held at the Otto M. Budig Theatre Sunday, February 6 at 7 PM with pay-what-you-can pricing.

At this time, all ticketholders must be masked and show proof of a full COVID vaccination status OR provide a negative COVID test to enter The Otto M. Budig Theater. More details on the exact procedure are shared before each performance.  Learn more at CSC’s Health and Safety page at cincyshakes.com/health-and-safety/.

Tickets are on sale now. There are discounts available for students, seniors, local residents, and community partners as access to all is important to CSC. Each performance night has a limited number of $14 “Access” tickets in the Upper Gallery.  These can be purchased in advance by going online or calling the Box Office.  And starting 1 hour before each performance, any unreserved tickets may be available as a discounted Rush Ticket to anyone, not just students. These tickets are only $12 and could be located anywhere in the house depending on that evening’s availability. These cannot be reserved more than 1 hour before a show and must be purchased in person in the Box Office.

In the spirit of building community, CSC launches YP Preview Nights, an event that welcomes young professionals to the Wednesday Preview Nights of their mainstage shows and offers the chance for a mid-week break at the theatre with fellow peers. The first YP Preview Night is August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” YP night on January 19. YP Nights are supported by the generosity of the thousands of young professional contributors to the ArtsWave Campaign.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s 2021-2022 Grand Re-Opening Season is generously presented by The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. Foundation; along with our Education Season Sponsor, Debby and Jim Mason Honoring James R. Bridgeland, Jr; and our Operating Support Partners, The Ohio Arts Council, The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts with Arts Midwest, The Shubert Foundation, Lightborne, and the tens of thousands of people who give generously to the ArtsWave Community Campaign.

August Wilson’s
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”
January 21 – February 12, 2022

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is honored to continue August Wilson’s work to life with “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. In this American classic, tensions and temperatures rise at a Chicago music studio in 1927 when fiery, fearless blues singer Ma Rainey joins her band for a fraught recording session. She is a Black woman determined to control her art and her life on her own terms. However, as egos and generational ideologies clash, heated conflicts erupt between everyone present that wrestle with the complexities of racism and artistic exploitation in this Tony Award® nominated powerhouse of a play.

Sergio Aguillón-Mata

(COVINGTON, KY) Jan. 10, 2022 – The Carnegie is excited to announce the addition of Sergio Aguillon-Mata to its administrative team as its new Deputy Director. The Deputy Director is a co-leader of The Carnegie and responsible for several aspects of operations.

Specifically, the Deputy Director will work in conjunction with The Carnegie’s Executive Director as well as other department directors to implement the three-year strategic plan to grow the organization’s capacity. He will also work with Best to co-manage fundraising activities while showcasing a clear vision, passion and commitment to organization’s mission and providing accessibility in the arts sector.

“Sergio is a talented, dedicated individual with a wealth of experience that will serve him and, in turn, The Carnegie, well in this role,” says The Carnegie’s Executive Director Kim Best. “We are excited to welcome him to our team and enjoy all of the wonderful contributions he is able to bring about on behalf of The Carnegie and our patrons.”

Born in Mexico City, Aguillón-Mata’s background is in Hispanic Philology and Literature. An author of three books of fiction published in Mexico, 2003 saw him receive the Punto de Partida award from the National Autonomous University of Mexico for his essay “Palingenesia.” He lived in Germany between 2008-2010 where he researched the work of Cuban poet Severo Sarduy through a grant via the German Service of Foreign Academic Exchange, also known as a DAAD. Coming stateside in 2010, he previously worked for the Workers Defense Project as a member of AmeriCorps in Austin. He would later move to Cincinnati in 2012, working for the local Feeding America affiliate, the Freestore Foodbank, prior to joining The Carnegie.

Joking that he is part of “the machinery behind the curtain” akin to The Wizard of Oz, Aguillón-Mata is excited to join “a fantastic team” to the benefit of The Carnegie.

“I want things to work seamlessly in the organization so people can perform at their best. I have my own artistic and intellectual curiosities as an audience member and am very much interested in contributing to new additions to the calendar when it comes to event planning,” he says. “We need to be a platform for local talent and we intend to help our artists amplifying their reach to other parts of the world.”

Acclaimed Dancer, Choreographer, Innovator will assume artistic leadership August 1, 2022

Cincinnati, OH (January 18, 2022) – Cincinnati Ballet announced today the appointment of Jodie Gates as Cincinnati Ballet’s next Artistic Director, continuing the Company’s trailblazing history of female leadership in the art form. Ms. Gates will also serve as Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy effective August 1, 2022. Current Artistic Director Victoria Morgan will retire at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 Season after 25 years as the Company’s artistic leader.

For 35 years, Ms. Gates has contributed to the profession as a visionary leader, artistic director, arts educator, stager, choreographer, and dancer. She is a former principal ballet dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Ms.Gates comes to Cincinnati from Los Angeles, where she is most recently the Founding Director of the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and Artistic Director and Founder of the Laguna Dance Festival in Laguna Beach, California. Ms. Gates is also an accomplished choreographer, as well as an artistic collaborator with choreographer William Forsythe, staging ballets internationally for Forsythe Productions. “Jodie brings with her more than three decades of excellence and innovation on the international stage,” said Scott Altman, Cincinnati Ballet President and CEO. “She has a deep respect for the history of the art form and brings an incredible passion for its future. With the new Cincinnati Ballet Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance, we are at watershed moment in the organization’s history. I am delighted to partner with Jodie and support her vision for the Company.” Ms. Gates will set the artistic direction of the Company that includes 27 Company artists and 12 Second Company – CB2 dancers, as well as the Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy Professional Training Division, and all Academy training divisions. Ms. Gates inherits a Company that has experienced rapid growth during the last five years. Cincinnati Ballet completed and exceeded its $30.8 million dollar capital campaign to fund the state-of-the-art, 57,000-square-foot Cincinnati Ballet Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance in Walnut Hills, which officially opened in September 2021. The Company’s operating budget has also grown to $11.5 million for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

“I am truly looking forward to contributing to the creative voices of Cincinnati Ballet, a Company I have long admired,” Ms. Gates said. “There is a solid foundation to build on and I enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to evolve the narrative of dance, and curate programs through the lens of inclusion. I envision a future for the art form where ballet is for everyone, for all communities; I would love for people to find themselves in our dances. I would also like to recognize that Cincinnati Ballet has a longstanding commitment to the community through both performance and education, and I am looking forward to deepening and strengthening the identity of the Cincinnati Ballet locally and nationally. I am excited to explore Cincinnati, contribute to the city’s robust cultural fabric, and join the community.”

In June 2021, The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University awarded Ms. Gates the distinguished 2021/2022 Residency Fellowship. Her Fellowship acknowledges her most recent work as initiator for the Artistic Directors Coalition for Ballet in America, a group of artistic directors, choreographers, and educators who are addressing systemic racism and inequities within the culture of ballet. “This is a pivotal time for Cincinnati Ballet and the art form,” said Debbie Brant and Joel Stone, co-chairs of the Artistic Director Search Committee. “Jodie has a visionary point of view, along with such an amazing depth of knowledge and international experience. Jodie recognizes the critical need to expand diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.”

Ms. Gates’ professional career began with the mentorship of the visionary director Robert Joffrey. She originated many roles and collaborated with a host of renowned choreographers, including Alonzo King, Agnes de Mille, Paul Taylor, William Forsythe, Martha Clarke, and Mark Morris. She was featured at the 1993 presidential inauguration, and previously had the honor to perform at The Kennedy Center for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Her performing career ranged from full-length productions such as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet, the title roles in Giselle and Cinderella, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Swanhilda in Coppélia, to principal roles in repertoire by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Dwight Rhoden, Alvin Ailey, Sir Frederick Ashton, and several reconstructions, including dancing the role as The Chosen One in Vaslav Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Her guest appearances include galas at The Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and dancing Odette/Odile with Fernando Bujones in Swan Lake at the Ballet de Monterrey, Mexico, to appearing in well-known festivals in Spoleto Italy, The Edinburgh Festival, The Nijinsky Festival in Hamburg, Germany, and The Melbourne Festival in Australia. “I am thrilled for Cincinnati Ballet to attract such exceptional talent,” said Victoria Morgan. “Jodie has worked closely with our art form’s most influential icons. Dance legends have been her personal coaches and teachers.”

As a recognized female ballet choreographer, Ms. Gates has also created more than 60 original dance works. She has created commissioned work for dozens of dance companies and academic institutions, as well as created work for ad campaigns, commercials, and events including choreography for singer/songwriter John Legend. She has been commissioned by Ballet West, Staatsballett Berlin, Kansas City Ballet, Colorado Ballet, BalletX, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, among others. Her teaching credentials include invitations to teach professional companies such as New York City Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, as well as performing arts schools and academic institutions. Ms. Gates’ most recent accomplishment as the Founding Director of the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance was a monumental success, creating a hybrid curriculum model that explores performance and choreography while engaging students with rigorous academic studies. Added T. Quinn, Chair of Cincinnati Ballet’s Board of Trustees: “Jodie was the perfect choice to lead the evolution of Cincinnati Ballet. With her experience as an artistic director, choreographer, and educator, she deeply understands the importance of connectivity between the Company and Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy.”

Ms. Gates received a Psychology of Leadership Certificate from Cornell University SC Johnson College of Business and studied with the Higher Education Leadership Program for Women (HERS Institute) at Bryn Mawr College. Her honors include the 2021/22 Residency Fellowship from The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University; recognition for Arts Leadership by the American Association of University Women; Altria/ABT fellowship from American Ballet Theatre; honoree from Arts Orange County and a recipient of the esteemed Jerome Robbins New Essential Works program.
