BIC_logoCincinnati, OH (April 20, 2022) – Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati presented by TriHealth announces a highly-anticipated season lineup of shows including previously announced HADESTOWN along with new musicals TINA: THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL, TOOTSIE, and the Tony Award Winning Best Musical MOULIN ROUGE. The season also includes rescheduled shows from the 19/20 season JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and ANASTASIA. These will be joined by ANNIE, and BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL.

Season tickets for the 22/23 Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati Season presented by TriHealth will go on sale Wednesday, April 20 online, by phone and in-person at 10:00am. There will be three convenient ways to purchase season tickets:

PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
Broadway in Cincinnati shows typically run for two weeks at the Aronoff Center.  Performance options are Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30pm, Friday evenings at 8:00pm, Saturdays at 2:00 & 8:00pm and Sundays at 1:00 & 6:30pm. (All times are subject to change.) An audio-described performance for the visually impaired and an American Sign Language interpreted performance for the deaf are available.  Anyone requiring either of these services or accommodations for the physically challenged should request so when purchasing season tickets.  Guests interested in learning more about age appropriateness and content of shows can visit BroadwayInCincinnati.com/FamilyGuide.

From the Tony Award®-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

Off-Broadway Hit SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY Begins April 30 at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park

PIP_SchoolgirlsCINCINNATI (April 19, 2022) – The Off-Broadway coming-of-age story SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY sold out its run in New York. Now, Cincinnati audiences can enjoy a new production that takes them into the endlessly entertaining world of teenage girlhood when it plays in the Marx Theatre this spring. Presented by Moe & Jack Rouse and Randolph Wadsworth, the show begins April 30 and runs through May 22. Opening night is May 5.

The New York Times called the play “a gleeful African makeover of an American genre,” while The Hollywood Reporter called it “ferociously entertaining.”

SCHOOL GIRLS combines coming-of-age drama with sharp comedy for an entertaining, teenage morality tale with a nod to Tina Fey’s comedy Mean Girls. At the same time, its reflections on such themes as colorism, hair, body image and socioeconomics open the door to a relevant discussion of Black culture.

Paulina, the reigning Queen Bee of Ghana’s most exclusive boarding school, finds her carefully controlled world thrown into chaos when new girl Ericka arrives from America and captures the envy of their peers. What’s more, Paulina finds her quest to become Miss Ghana 1986 threatened when Ericka captures the attention of a pageant recruiter.

SCHOOL GIRLS is written by Jocelyn Bioh, an award-winning Ghanaian American writer and performer. Her plays, including SCHOOL GIRLS, have been produced extensively in New York and around the country. She has been a staff writer for the Netflix series Russian Doll and Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. Bioh has also been tapped to write a musical adaptation of the Caribbean fairy tale Once on This Island for Disney+.

“In the case of School Girls, as a dark-skinned woman, I know in a very personal and visceral way what it’s like to feel inferior to people who are lighter-skinned than me,” Bioh says in an interview with Women and Hollywood. “The journey to owning and accepting beauty was a really long one, and I always knew I would address that in a play, but I wasn’t sure how. It didn’t feel like an after-school special because that’s also not my thing. Colorism is played out in my play, although it’s not mentioned. That’s why I think the story really lives.”

The Playhouse’s $10 Tuesday program returns during SCHOOL GIRLS on the Tuesday, May 3 performance. A minimum of 100 tickets will be available.

Individual tickets start at just $35. Student tickets are just $15 on the day of the show for all other performances. Discounted ticket prices for teens are available for all productions and are $30 to $45, depending on show and seat location. $10 Tuesday
The $10 tickets may only be purchased in-person at the Playhouse Box Office beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 when the building opens to the public. Limit two per person. No advance reservations or choice of seating.

ADVISORY
Recommended for ages 13 and up. The competition for Miss Ghana is fierce, and while they’re in pursuit of the crown, contestants use adult language and have frank discussions of body shaming, classism, colorism and self-image.

PLAYHOUSE PERSPECTIVES: If the Present Looks Like the Past: A Conversation About Colorism
Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Playhouse

Author Alice Walker defines colorism as “prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.” SCHOOL GIRLS displays the ways colorism affects the Black community, and particularly young Black girls as they are discovering their identity. Join us for an engaging dialogue with actors from the play and community members to discuss and share experiences and to learn about colorism. Panelists include Burgess Byrd and Markia Nicole Smith (actors from the play) and Dr. Shantel Thomas.

AUDIO-DESCRIBED PERFORMANCE (May 21 at 2 p.m.) Each Marx Theatre production offers one audio-described performance during the show’s run. Trained volunteers describe the visual elements of the production via a closed-circuit receiver that is approximately the size of a deck of cards and fits in a jacket pocket or on the lap. A small earpiece fits into one ear, allowing patrons to hear dialogue, music and other sound effects. The description is timed to avoid interfering with dialogue.

SIGNED PERFORMANCE (May 22 at 2 p.m.) Each Marx Theatre production offers one signed performance during the show’s run. The interpreter stands toward the bottom of aisle 5. Look at our Accessibility page for a map of best viewing locations. This performance also includes a Meet the Artists discussion with the cast and crew after the show. Beginning on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, the masking requirement for performances at the Playhouse will change. Cincinnati Ballet to Celebrate Victoria Morgan’s Retirement with Huge Dance Party!

Cincinnati, OH (April 18, 2022) – Cincinnati Ballet is celebrating Artistic Director Victoria Morgan’s 25th and final season with Club B at the Cincinnati Ballet Margaret and Michael Valentine Center for Dance, April 23 from 8 pm to midnight.

Club B presented by Mercy Health is Cincinnati Ballet’s largest fundraiser of the year and Cincinnati’s biggest dance party. Every year, about a thousand people dance the night away to a special theme; years past have included an 80s theme at the American Sign Museum and a Latin themed Club B at a private airplane hangar. This year, attendees will party exclusively inside Cincinnati Ballet brand-new studios as the incredible Center for Dance will be transformed into an incredible silver dance factory. Guests will arrive and walk the silver runway hosted by drag artists Brock Leah Spears and Lady Phaedra, then head upstairs for incredible dance performances, Q102 dueling DJS and emcee Mollie Watson, DJ Etrayn, Millennium Robots, celebrity guests, giveaways, open bar, delicious food, and much more. Cincinnati, OH-After an amazing previous performance in the Rick Steiner Blackbox Theatre with Rhinoceros, the Walnut Hills High School Theatre Department is eager to welcome back audiences with Ken Ludwig’s hilarious screwball comedy, Lend Me a Tenor.  A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap romp is guaranteed to make audiences teary-eyed with laughter.

The show runs April 21st-23rd, 2022 at 7 p.m. with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, April 23rd.

Set in September 1934, Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand opera Company, is preparing to welcome Tito Merelli, the greatest tenor of his generation and known as Il Stupendo, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. However, Tito arrives late and through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double-dose of tranquilizer and passes out, making his pulse so low Saunders and his assistant Mas believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the opera, Saunders persuades Max to fool the audience into thinking he is the great Tito Merelli by getting into his costume. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into an identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume with two women chasing them, both thinking they are with Il Stupendo.

“Mistaken identities, slamming doors, Scooby-Doo style chases– it’s a classic farce ” says co-director Helen Raymond-Goers. “After the last couple years, it’s time for us all to take things a little less seriously, at least for a couple hours, and Lend Me A Tenor gives us a great opportunity to find the silly in the ordinary and the absolutely ridiculous in the extraordinary.”

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. A Wild, Bluesy Wail of a Play Slays the Stage at Falcon Theatre

(Newport, KY) — Falcon Theatre closes its triumphant 2021-2022 season with Spunk!, written by Zora Neale Hurston and adapted for the stage by George C. Wolfe.

Spunk! is a raucous, charming, blues-infused look at love, revenge, jealousy, and the fine art of the hustle. Hurston’s ear for vernacular and character are infused with gritty, dry wit and set to an irresistible score of rich, soulful music that carry the audience on a timeless journey through the lives of these vibrant African-American characters in the first half of the 20th century.

Spunk! is directed by Candice Handy and features a five-person cast that includes Bryana Bentley, Jasmine Bouldin, Darryl Hilton, Jayvon Shack, and R. DeAndre Smith. Blues music will be arranged and performed by Nathan Singer of The Whiskey Shambles.

Performances are on May 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, and June 2, 3, 4, 2022. All performances are at 8:00 PM EST. Tickets prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with ID. Patrons enjoy a $5 discount for Thursday performances. Visit falcontheater.net to reserve seats.
