Healing the Wounds of the 1964 Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War

FT_Bourbon at the Border logoFALCON THEATRE PRESENTS BOURBON AT THE BORDER BY PEARL CLEAGE

Bourbon is a powerful, passionate piece.” – Chicago Tribune

REGIONAL PREMIERE PRODUCTION BEGINS AUGUST 5 THROUGH AUGUST 14, 2022

(Newport, KY) — With support from a grant by the PNC Charitable Trust, Falcon Theatre brings Bourbon at the Border by distinguished playwright Pearl Cleage (Blues for an Alabama Sky, A Song for Coretta) to the stage for a special, limited engagement.

When May and Charlie joined hundreds of other Americans who went to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 for a massive voter registration drive, they had no idea their lives were about to change forever. As students at Howard University, their campus activism had been met with calls to their parents and threats of expulsion. The stakes in Mississippi were a lot higher. White supremacists, outraged at the challenge to their segregated way of life, responded with violence that left three civil rights workers dead and many wounded. Soon after, President Johnson deployed thousands of American soldiers to fight the Vietnam War. Four decades later, their heroic fight for racial justice and freedom still haunt them as they struggle to make sense of their lives and look for hope in their future.

Cincinnati audiences won’t want to miss what the Atlanta Journal-Constitution calls a “…surprisingly heartbreaking, tingling story of the ghosts of a Mississippi summer…” directed by Piper N. DavisBourbon on the Border features an extraordinary cast of audience favorites, including Torie Wiggins*, Dathan Hooper*, Kyndra Jefferies, and James Christian, Jr..

Performances are August 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 8:00 PM EST and August 7 and 14 at 2:00 PM EST. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $15 for students with valid ID. Visit falcontheater.net for details and to reserve your seats.

Health and Safety Information
In keeping with our policy of putting safety first and also responding to national and local health and safety guidelines, Falcon will no longer require vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests of our patrons. Masks are welcome and strongly recommended, but not required. Please read through all our health and safety guidelines here for full details, which will be updated with all the latest changes so check back before coming to the theater to ensure you understand the current safety guidelines.

Elizabeth Knuppel (President, Skystone Partners) and Josh Tilford (Independent Dance Instructor) took second place, and Jill Jansen (Director of Government & External Relations, Mercy Health) and Jozsef Parragh (Independent Dance Instructor) placed third.

The popular event – on hiatus since 2019 due to the pandemic – welcomed 475 guests. As CAA’s largest annual fundraiser, it raised more than $85,000 in support of the organization’s acclaimed arts education programs, including the Overture Awards – the nation’s largest locally run high school arts scholarship competition.

Inspired by the hit TV show Dancing with the StarsDancing for the Stars 2022 featured six Cincinnati celebrities paired with some of the area’s finest professional dancers in a competition program at which the audience vote and judges scores propelled the winners to victory. The competitive dance for the evening was the Foxtrot, and each dance pair had 90 seconds to woo the crowd and the judges.

Event emcees were Amanda Orlando (Morning Show host, WARM 98.5) and Bob Herzog (morning anchor, LOCAL 12 WKRC and Dancing for the Stars 2013 alum). • Two big screens that featured live video of the competition and engaging video introductions of the stars and pros (interviews and rehearsal footage) before their dances.
  • Humorous, astute, and supportive comments from the Dancing for the Stars panel of judges.
  • Lots of laughs and fun from the evenings entertaining emcee’s – Amanda Orlando and Bob Herzog.
  • Exceptionally responsive, raucous, and energetic audience reactions, which included large cheering sections holding signs with various messages in support of their favorite Stars.
  • The evening’s champs – Prime Cincinnati’s Sebastian Castillo and his dance pro Doreen Beatrice  earned one of the competition’s two perfect scores of 30 with a routine that was filled with personality and well-executed dance moves. The deafening response from their large group of supportive family and friends gave them the edge and the win. The pair danced to “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond – “So Good, So Good, So Good!”
  • Wearing a sparkling 1920’s-era flapper dress, second-place finisher Elizabeth Knuppel delivered a very polished Foxtrot with her pro Josh Tilford that included beautiful lifts and fun Charleston steps. The pair danced to “All About That Bass” by Postmodern Jukebox and received the only other perfect score of the night.
  • Looking beautiful in a floor-length pink evening gown with a starburst design, Jill Jansen sparkled in an elegant Foxtrot with her dance pro Jozsef Parragh as they danced to “I’m Shakin’” by The Brooklyn Boogaloo Blowout.
  • Real Estate Agent Sara Mirus transformed into a pretty-in-pink Material Girl as she danced with her ever-smiling pro Jeremy Mainous to Madonna’s “Material Girl.” Near the end of the dance there was an explosion of faux $100 bills to the surprise of the crowd.
  • LOCAL 12’s Jon Lawhead – dressed as Michael Jackson with the iconic single white glove, white socks, embroidered jacket, hat, and sunglasses – wowed the audience with his dance moves (and drum playing).  He and his pro Maura Garuccio danced to Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”
  • Fundraising Champ Bret Schneider and his pro Bonita Brockert performed a crowd-pleasing series of dips, kicks, and turns to Barry Manilow’s version of “Dancing in the Dark.”

TC_Rent logoProduction to run June through August as part of The Carnegie’s Repertory Format Programming

COVINGTON, Ky. (April 28, 2022) – It has won numerous awards and became the unofficial soundtrack to a generation whose voice was begging to be heard… And now, RENT will take the stage at The Carnegie this June and will run through August.

Set at the end of the 1990s in New York City’s East Village, RENT is a story about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Based loosely on Puccini’s 1896 opera “La Boheme,” RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians all trying to make their way as the HIV/AIDS crisis looms in the shadows.

A pop culture phenomenon soon after its debut, RENT features a litany of memorable songs that resonates with audiences of all ages. The Carnegie’s production of RENT honors the playwright/lyricist Jonathan Larson’s musical legacy, featuring favorites like “Seasons of Love,” “Out Tonight” and “La Vie Boheme” that will have audiences singing along from beginning to end.

“RENT continues to be a captivating, compelling production due to all the qualities that made it a hit in the first place: A great, socially relevant story, dynamic characters and songs that are as poignant as they are powerful,” said The Carnegie Theatre Director, Maggie Perrino. “We are thrilled to bring RENT to The Carnegie stage and look forward to our audiences falling in love with the production as so many others have before them.”

RENT joins The Carnegie’s productions of INTO THE WOODS and GEORGE REMUS as part of The Carnegie’s 2022-23 Summer Series in Repertory Format. Performances of each production will be offered at specific times throughout the summer to offer guests multiple opportunities to see each show. The 22-23 season will conclude with the family-friendly production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN in January.

The Carnegie will host eight performances of RENT on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday, July 16, 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 17, 3 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 23, 7:30 p.m.
