SSCC_Steel Magnolias promoSTEEL MAGNOLIAS
SSCC Theatre
Nov. 4-6
Sothern State Community College Daniels Auditorium [Hillsboro]

Directed by Rainee Angles

Cast: Jessica Wise as Truvy, Emma Horick as Annelle, Leslie Holmes as Ouiser, Bronwyn Jones as Miss Clairee, Paula Campagna as M’Lynn & Madison Hatfield as Shelby

Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play is at times touching and funny.

CARMINA BURANA and EXTREMELY CLOSE Runs Nov. 4-6

CB_Carmina Burana promoCARMINA BURANA and EXTREMELY CLOSE
Cincinnati Ballet
Nov. 4-6
Springer Auditorium Music Hall [Over-the-Rhine]

Carmina Burana is the perfect union of music and dance. One of the best known works of the 20th century, the opening of Carl Orff’s secular cantata is recognizable to almost all who hear it. This Season, Cincinnati Ballet artists will perform Nicolo Fonte’s bold choreography, accompanied by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the May Festival Chorus, celebrating its 150th Anniversary Season in 2023. Carmina Burana is based upon a rediscovered collection of poetry dating back to the 11th century. Orff set 24 of the poems to music in 1936.

Part art installation and part movement drama, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Extremely Close creates a sense of restlessness as dancers negotiate their way through a perpetually shifting environment. Propelled by changing landscapes, Cerrudo weaves a mesmerizing spell of movement punctuated by fleeting moments of intense intimacy with music by composers Philip Glass and Dustin O’Halloran.
