MamLuft&Co. Dance to premiere ICEMAN 3000

ML&C_Iceman 3000 promo

Susan Honer of MamLuft&Co. Dance and Sean Simon

An original work co-presented by the Contemporary Arts Center
May 24-26, 2018
with support from the National Endwoment for the Arts

Cincinnati, Ohio — MamLuft&Co.’s newest work ICEMAN 3000 is based on the story of Ötzi, the 5,300 year old mummified “iceman” discovered by hikers in the Austrian Alps in 1991. The Ötzi discovery was stunning for the body and belongings incredibly preserved in the ice. But while the biological and physical materials draw our immediate attention, the true significance of the find emerges as the man and his surrounding block of ice enter into the scientists’ (and our) speculative imaginations. The narrative of the man, his times, and his death constitute the true treasure gradually extracted from the ice.

Choreographer Susan Honer and sculpture artist/composer Sean Simonwill reimagine the iceman story in the year 3000 A.D. with dance, sculpture, and sound. Using the Ötzi discovery and deciphering of the remains and artifacts, as well as the forensics and fantasies of murder as a framework, ICEMAN 3000 imagines a new discovery set in a land where the earth’s climate has changed significantly. Human culture is aquatic and these futuristic beings find a chunk of ice containing a body (and its possessions) from 2018. The dancers interact with the sculpture and body in an effort to imagine what 21st century life, culture, and dance might look like to humans living many millennia into the future, and how this iceman met his demise.

MamLuft&o. Dance’s second new work of the 2017-2018 season is funded with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, ArtsWave (fueled by the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign), and The Ohio Arts Council (made possible by state tax dollars that support quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically).

ICEMAN 3000 will be presented in the iconic fifth floor gallery of the Contemporary Arts Center.

This presentation is co-presented by the Contemporary Arts Center and is presented in conjunction with the installation Deep North by Chris Larson as part of his larger exhibition Function Is Redundant. Deep North documents the performance of a medieval looking machine inhabiting a frozen shotgun house that turns into a rhythmic apparatus as it moves chunks of ice from one end of the house to the other. (Honer’s work will echo the “shotgun” house of Larson’s exhibit by composing the dance along the length of the gallery.)

Performances take place Thursday, May 24, 2018 7:30pm; Friday, May 25, 2018 7:30pm; and Saturday, May 26, 2018 2:00pm. Tickets are $15 for CAC Members. Tickets for the general public are $15 before May 21st and $20 after.

More information can be found at MLCo.org/iceman. Tickets are available from the Contemporary Arts Center at 44 E. 6th Street, 513.345.8400, or at contemporaryartscenter.org/iceman.

The performance features MamLuft&Co. Dance Company Members: Corrinne Bailey (Columbus, Ohio), Samantha Conte (Springboro, Ohio), Claire Dieringer (Lima, Ohio), Susan Honer (Roanoke, Virginia), Gabriel Martinez Rubio (Queretaro, Mexico), and Hannah Williamson (Liberty Township, Ohio).

MamLuft&Co. Dance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to bring more Modern Dance to more people through creating, advocating for, and educating in dance that is innovative, palpable, and accessible.

MamLuft&Co. Dance’s work is supported in part by individual donors, big and small.
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. MamLuft&Co. Dance is made possible through the generosity of more than 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community Campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps to fund this organization with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. ML&Co. is a resident company at the Aronoff Center for the Arts and The Liberty Exhibition Hall (in Northside). This performance could not be possible without partnership with the Contemporary Arts Center.

Know Theatre is Proud to Present a Reading of NATURAL SHOCKS

KTC_Natural Shocks logoNATURAL SHOCKS
By Lauren Gunderson
April 21, 2018

A national campaign of theater activism against gun violence

Part confessional, part stand up, part reckoning

Know Theatre is proud to present a reading of Natural Shocks by Lauren Gunderson, a relevant and  raw story that tells of a tornado, a chatty woman, and a dark secret.

The weekend of April 20, 2018 — the 19th anniversary of Columbine and the day of the National School Walkout — Know Theatre along with theatres across the nation will be using the reading of Gunderson’s new work as theater activism that serves to amplify the voices of those brave children saying “never again.”

As a junior in high school when Columbine happened, Lauren Gunderson was immediately activated. At 17, her efforts through writing and organizing mirrors the efforts of those left in the wake of the Parkland school shooting. Her new play Natural Shocks is a response to the gun violence of nineteen years ago, and the violence of today.

Based on Hamlet’s “To be or not to be,” soliloquy, Natural Shocks is a new 65-minute, tour-de-force play that bursts to life when we meet a woman waiting out an imminent tornado in her basement. She overflows with life, stories, and a final secret that puts the reality of guns in America in your very lap. The play is part confessional, part stand up, and part reckoning.

House opens Saturday April 21st at 2pm, with live music, snacks, specialty cocktails at our bar, and information from representatives from local groups working for women’s rights. The reading will begin at 3pm. Join the Know Theatre, as well as a cast of all-stars including Miranda McGee*, Burgess Byrd*, Lormarev Jones, Maggie Lou Rader*, Lisa DeRoberts, and Regina Pugh* as we attempt to embody the everywoman, and every town. The staged reading is directed by Alice Flanders.

In addition, join the cast, director, and local activists from Women Helping Women for an interactive talkback following the performance.

All tickets are pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $12. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted at the door. All proceeds to benefit Women Helping Women, a local group working to prevent gender-based violence and to empower all survivors.

KTC_2018 Cincy Fringe Logo

THE LONG WAIT IS OVER! FIND OUT WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE
15TH ANNUAL CINCINNATI FRINGE FESTIVAL AT

THE 2018 CINCY FRINGE
LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT PARTY!

April 24th @ 6:30pm

Know Theatre’s Cincinnati Fringe Festival (May 29 – June 10, 2018)  is 13 days of theatre, art, music, dance, and everything between — that’s kinda WEIRD. like YOU! And on Tuesday, April 24th we’re holding our annual Lineup Announcement Party at Know Theatre to let you in on everything there is to know about programming and events at this year’s 15th Anniversary Festival — including the unveiling of this year’s poster and imagery. There’s just so much to tell you about and we can’t wait!!!

Kicking off this year’s Announcement Party will be a special performance of the 2007 Audience Pick of the Fringe, Calculus: The Musical from Matheatre (Salt Lake City, UT), the only show in Cincy Fringe history to ever receive an extension of their run due to audience demand. For eight years, Know Theatre — in collaboration with Matheatre — sent Calculus: The Musical to hundreds of schools and events as a nationally touring production. In 2016 co-creator and original cast member Sadie Bowman resumed her original role in an updated version of the show on an independent Matheatre tour where it’s has been paired with artist (and Calculus co-star) Ricky Coates’ Tesla Ex Machina (itself a runaway hit at the 2015 Cincy Fringe).  In Calculus: The Musical,

Isaac Newton joins forces with Ada, a modern math student, on a journey of discovery. Their adventures through the peaks and troughs of Calculus is a buddy comedy for the ages! Archimedes, Robert Hooke, Gottfried Leibniz, L’Hopital and Riemann are part of the action, from toga parties and accordion smackdowns to sick rhymes and dream ballets–you’ve never laughed so much in an hour of Calculus. Musical parodies that span genres–from Daft Punk to Eminem, Gilbert and Sullivan to Lady Gaga and Meghan Trainor–introduce and illuminate concepts of limits, integration and differentiation.

Developed by a high school math teacher, all ten hilarious, catchy songs deliver powerful mnemonic content proven to get stuck in students’ heads, actively aiding comprehension and memorization of formulas, rules and concepts! The quest for the instantaneous rate of change and the area under the curve comes vividly alive with an unforgettable soundtrack!

Calculus: The Musical will begin at 7:30pm on 4/24 and tickets are available now for $15 via cincyfringe.com, knowtheatre.com, or by calling 513-300-5669. Your ticket also includes admission to the remainder of the Lineup Announcement Party, which is a pay-what-you-can event.

Following the performance of Calculus: The Musical, Fringe Producer Chris Wesselman will take to the Know’s Underground cabaret stage for a special edition of the Channel Fringe Hard-Hitting Action News Update, the Festival’s info-taining nightly newscast.

Chris will reveal details behind this year’s Lineup of productions and programming, the venues and spaces in Over-the-Rhine that will be home to shows and performances, make some special announcements regarding this year’s 15th Anniversary celebration, and so much MORE!

Join us for this “Fringe for a Night” shindig where we’ll all pretend it’s already the end of May and all our kinda WEIRD dreams are coming true!

ROK_Trip Jones logoCINCINNATI, OH – March 26, 2018 — The Free Family Fun Series at the Arts Center at Dunham resumes with the ROKCincy Opera for Children production of “Trip Jones and the Case of the Missing Music” on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.

Join Trip Jones for a choose-your-own adventure opera with ROKCincy as he tried to solve the mystery of the Diva’s missing music before the curtain goes up and the show…can’t go on. This action-packed, interactive story takes audiences behind the scenes to learn what it takes to put on grand opera. The performance is 40 minutes in length and is appropriate for grades K-6 and their families.

ROKCincy is a non-profit program with a mission to introduce young people to the thrill of live, fully staged opera and to give developing professional musicians an opportunity to hone their performance skills through experience.

“The Free Family Fun Series has a growing following,” said Carrie Mees, who supports programming at the Arts Center at Dunham. “The series allows people of all ages to experience the arts for free and inspire them to get involved in the performing arts.”

All 2017-2018 Free Family Fun Series wraps up on Saturday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. with Rapunzel by Mike Kenny performed by the Playhouse in the Park’s Off the Hill Productions. Courtesy of a grant from Price Hill Will Arts CAT, Rapunzel lives in tower with her loving, yet very overprotective Nan after her mother left across the big sea. Year after year, Nan builds their tower higher and higher to protect them from the disgraceful, scary world. Every year, Rapunzel’s hair grows longer and so does her curiosity about the outside. It isn’t until she meets a local boy, Rafi, who finally gives her the courage to be free. Recommended for all ages.
