Show description:
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!

Auditions Announced for VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE at Tree County Players

TREE_logoAuditions for VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE will be held at the Tree County Players office (327 S. Monfort St., Greensburg, IN) on Friday , January 15 from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM and Saturday, January 16 from 9:30 AM – noon. The show will be performed April 14, 15 and 16, 2016. Rehearsals begin in early March.

Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, Christopher Durang, the master of comedy, takes characters and themes from Chekhov, pours them into a blender and mixes them up. The utterly hilarious and occasionally touching result is his latest play set in present day Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Vanya and his stepsister Sonia have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they stayed home to take care of their ailing parents, their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia to feel trapped and regretful, Their soothsayer/cleaning woman Cassandra keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, which include a sudden visit from Masha and her twenty-something boy toy Spike. Broad comic acting is raised to the level of high art…deliriously funny…a heedless good time. ADULT THEMES and LANGUAGE.

Six roles to be cast by actors who can convincingly portray the following:

  • Vanya: 50’s – intelligent, cynical, nostalgic, playwright, resigned to his life more or less (at least compared to Sonia).
  • Sonia: His adopted sister, early 50’s, mousey, discontented, resentful, melancholy, imitates Maggie Smith (needs a British accent).
  • Masha: Vanya’s and Sonia’s sister. 50’s, diva, cougar, self-centered, glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world.
  • Spike: An aspiring actor, 29 or younger, Masha’s new companion, sexy, self-absorbed, very fit, muscular, not the brightest crayon in the box, comfortable being on stage in boxer shorts .
  • Nina: Lovely, sincere, would-be actress, early 20’s, visiting her aunt and uncle next door, star struck and energetic.
  • Cassandra: Cleaning lady and soothsayer, any age, dramatic, comic ability.
