Laughs abound as you get a glimpse into this traditional male rite of passage as lived out in the unique “Yooper” way.

Aug. 26-Oct. 1
Rouse Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed & choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge
Music directed by Leenya Rideout

Cast: Alex Canty, Matt Cusack, Allison Ann Kelly, Leenya Rideout & David Rowen

The hit musical returns! Ring of Fire celebrates the iconic Johnny Cash — the Man in Black whose razor-sharp vocals and stripped-down country sound helped shape the American rock ‘n’ roll landscape in the 20th century. The musical follows Cash’s early life in the cotton fields of Arkansas and moves to Memphis as he launches his music career, hits it big and marries the love of his life, June Carter. Five actor-musicians deliver crowd-pleasing renditions of Cash’s musical catalog, including “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I’ve Been Everywhere” and, of course, “Ring of Fire.” Revisit this toe-tapping, soul-stirring musical biography like never before in The Rouse Theatre! Advisory: Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash is suitable for teenage and adult audiences. This musical celebrates the iconic Johnny Cash, featuring details of Johnny’s career, covering topics such as substance abuse, guns, violence and murder.

SOUVENIR Runs Aug. 25-Sept. 3

LTC_SouvenirSOUVENIR
Lebanon Theatre Company
Aug. 25-Sept. 3
[Lebanon]

Directed by Saul Caplan
Produced by Kate Edington

For more than half a century the name Florence Foster Jenkins has been guaranteed to produce explosions of derisive laughter. Not unreasonably so, as this wealthy society eccentric suffered under the delusion that she was a great coloratura soprano when she was in fact incapable of producing two consecutive notes in tune. Nevertheless, her annual recitals in the ballroom of the Ritz Carlton hotel brought her extraordinary fame. Her growing mob of fans packed her recitals, stuffing handkerchiefs in their mouths to stifle their laughter—which Mrs. Jenkins blissfully mistook for cheers. SOUVENIR, by turn hilarious and poignant, tells her story through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon. Eyewitness accounts of their concerts vary so wildly it is almost impossible now to separate fact from gossip. Hence this fictional “biography,” in which we follow the story of their partnership from its earliest days to their infamous concert in Carnegie Hall and its aftermath. With each new imagined triumph Florence’s confidence soars. Faced with her boundless certainty, Cosme comes to revise his attitude, not only towards her singing but to the very meaning of music itself. A musical odd-couple for the ages.

INNOVA_Hunchback of Notre DameTHE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
INNOVAtheatre
Aug. 25-Sept. 3
Sorg Opera House [Middletown]

Directed by Richard Lee Waldeck
Musical and orchestral direction by George Drewyor
Choregraphed by Isadore Karrick

The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be “Out There,” observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.
