Picture it. United States, 2024. Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue brings Miami’s sassiest seniors to stages around the country for one more hurrah. We find Sophia out on bail after being busted by the DEA for running a drug ring for retirees. Blanche and Rose have founded CreakN, a thriving sex app for seniors. And Dorothy is trying to hold it all together with help from a new (much) younger sex-crazed lover. Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue allows audiences to relive the heartfelt hilarity of the four ladies who never stopped being best friends – starring male actors as the iconic TV characters. The show is rated 18+ (adult-themed comedy).

Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is a professional stage show unlike any other Golden Girls tribute that you might have experienced. The play is written by Robert Leleux, author of The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy and The Living End. His work has also appeared in The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine, and his other plays have been produced across the country. The show is directed by Eric Swanson, who was the co-founder and Executive Director of The Detroit Actors’ Theatre Company. The cast includes Ryan Bernier as Dorothy, Vince Kelley as Blanche, Adam Graber as Rose, Christopher Kamm as Sophia, and Jason Bowen as Stanley/Burt. DR. DIVERTIMENTO (Unplugged Party Music) on Oct. 28

KSO_Dr DivertimenoDr. Divertimento
(unplugged party music)
7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023
Greaves Concert Hall, NKU

The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra opens its 32nd season October 28th with Dr. Divertimento, and over 200 years of unplugged party music. The divertimento — a light-hearted musical form, which often included dance tunes — was normally performed by smaller groups of musicians in the 18th c. to accompany indoor and outdoor banquets and social events. Composers of the 20th century brought these party beats to ballet and orchestral music.

Saturday’s program opens with Mozart’s Divertimento in D for oboe, horns and strings followed by Bartok’s intriguing Divertimento for strings. Following intermission, Stravinsky’s homage to Tchaikovsky brings the whole orchestra on stage for the Divertimento from The Fairy’s Kiss, before closing with Bernstein’s rambunctious Divertimento, written for the Boston Symphony.

While not quite the zaniness of Spike Jones, Tom Leher, Ray Stevens, or Weird Al Yankovic, we’re sure Dr. Demento (whose college thesis compared operas of Berg and Debussy) would approve of the KSO’s whimsical pairings and program title. It’s the KSO and Dr. Divertimento — 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 28 at Greaves Concert Hall on the campus of NKU. Let’s party! For additional info and tickets — kyso.org or (859) 431-6216.

More on the KSO:
Since 1992, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of founder James R. Cassidy, has forged its unique brand of cultural entertainment via thematic programming,
while offering fresh presentations of classics, premieres and forays into jazz, film, dance, semi-staged operas and musicals, long before they were common place with orchestras today. Serving as a farm team to major and regional orchestras across the nation, the KSO offers professional musicians and audiences opportunities to perform and hear great and varied music. Subscription series concerts are the only ticketed performances, as the KSO’s six Summer concerts and its education outreach programs are completely free to attendees. In its fourth decade of serving the tristate, the KSO continues to make symphonic music and the concert experience attractive, accessible and affordable for all.

Passing the Torch with Humor And Grace

HRTC_Angry Raucous and Shamelessly GorgeousStorming the stage at The Human Race Theatre Company this fall is the regional premiere of Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous by Atlanta playwright Pearl Cleage. Featuring an all-local cast of four powerhouse women, this heartfelt comedy takes on passing the torch from one generation to the next, with all of the inherent risks and unknowns.

After decades of self-imposed exile in Amsterdam, actress Anna Campbell and her manager Betty Sampson receive an invitation to remount their controversial performance piece “Naked Wilson.” Uncertain of her reception, Anna auditions her possible replacement, an ambitious young performer whose experience is limited to the adult entertainment industry. These two women confront their differing world views with humor and grace–and still manage to find common ground.

“I am delighted to share Ms. Cleage’s work with Dayton, particularly this play that makes space for a woman’s counterpoint to August Wilson’s famed Century Cycle,” comments Emily N. Wells, The Human Race Theatre Company’s Artistic Director. “Beyond that, I love that she looks at legacy, and what it means to pass on experience and knowledge to the next generation.”

Directed by Cincinnati favorite Torie Wiggins, this fully local cast features Keisha Kemper, Kyndra Jefferies, Marva Williams-Parker, and Bryana Bentley.

Joining Wiggins on the production team are: Dick Block, Scenic Design; John Rensel, Lighting Design; Kristie Osi, Costume Design;  Matthew Tibbs, Sound Design; Brian Haack, Assistant Sound Designer; Sarah Gomes, Props; Carolyn Fast, Production Stage Manager.

CCM and Cincy Shakes Present Vampire Play for Halloween

CCM_Let the Right One InLET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct. 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater

CINCINNATI, OH —UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and the Cincinnati Shakespeare
Company (CSC) present Let The Right One In, a bloody vampire play based on the bestselling novel and award-winning film. Led by CSC Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips, the collaborative performance features professional CSC guest artists and CCM’s student actors.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN runs Oct 19-22 and 26-28 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.

“The production is such a special opportunity for both of these Cincinnati institutions,” Phillips says. “Actors from both CCM and CSC have the opportunity to work on a piece that challenges the imagination, shows the transformative power of adaptation in the theatre, and a brings a uniquely haunting story to life just in time for Halloween.”

Based on the novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, the play follows Oskar, a teenager who is mercilessly bullied by his schoolmates and neglected by his parents. Oskar sees an opportunity for connection in Eli, a mysterious girl who just moved in next door and only comes out at night. Amidst a string of brutal murders by an apparent serial killer, the two form a friendship made more intense by their shared loneliness. But while Oskar’s loneliness stems from the all-too-human struggles of early adolescence, Eli is lonely because she’s been a teenager for a very, very long time.

From Count Dracula to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, vampire legends have captured imaginations for centuries. Aside from supplying gore and scares, what can monsters reveal about loneliness, love and humanity? Adapted for the theater by Jack Thorne, Let The Right One In wields the vampire myth to deliver a dark coming-of-age love story that explores horror and compassion in equal measure.

CCM’s student actors will perform alongside CSC actors Barry Mulholland, Kelly Mengelkoch, Geoffrey Barnes II and Billy Chace. All artists involved — from the actors on stage to the designers and technicians backstage — have the challenge of creating a performance that delivers both genuine emotion and genuine chills.

CCM’s Theatre Design and Production team has some bloody special effects in store, including an edible heart. Audiences beware: there is a content advisory for Let The Right One In. The production is for mature audiences, and includes sexual situations, violence, blood and gore. The play is not appropriate for children 12 and under; parents strongly cautioned.
