STEW
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
March 2-April 7
Shelterhouse Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Stori Ayers

Three generations of Black women gather in Mama’s kitchen to cook an important meal — and things are about to boil over. As they take turns preparing a stew, closely held details of their lives rise slowly to the surface. But time is running short to prepare the meal, and the truths they try to keep from one another threaten to reveal themselves. A heady combination of secrets, knowingness and even violence hangs thick in the air before the day reaches an unforgettable climax. A 2021 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Zora Howard’s Stew tells a captivating, funny and intimate story about the relationship between mothers, daughters and the realities that bind them together. Stew is recommended for teenage and adult audiences. As three generations of women gather in Mama’s kitchen, the secrets simmer in the air. Ingredients include some strong adult language and very frank discussions about adult relationships and sexual activity.

Auditions Announced for FOUR OLD BROADS at Fairfield Footlighters

fflAuditions announced for Fairfield Footlighters upcoming production of FOUR OLD BROADS.

Directed by John Vanderplough
Produced by Dan Schindler

Auditions will be held Monday, February 5th, and Tuesday, February 6th from 630-8:30pm at the Fairfield Community Arts Center. (411 Wessel Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014)

Retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton desperately needs a vacation – and NOT another trip up to Helen, Georgia to see that “precious little German village for the umpteenth time.” A Sassy Seniors Cruise through the Caribbean may be just the ticket if she can just convince her best friend, Eaddy Mae Clayton, to stop praying and go with her. Unfortunately, things have not been very pleasant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living since Nurse Pat Jones began working there. A mystery unfolds with laughter as the gals try to outsmart the evil Nurse Pat Jones and figure out why so many residents have been moved to “the dark side,” what exactly IS that mysterious pill, and what happened to Doctor Head? If they can solve the mystery, they may make it to the cruise ship after all.

Roles available:

  • Beatrice Shelton – Senior citizen; a former stripper with an attitude.
  • Eaddy Mae Clayton – Senior citizen; a former nurse and “religious” lady.
  • Imogene Fletcher – Senior citizen; the newest resident at Magnolia Place.
  • Maude Jenkins – Senior citizen; a funeral and soap-opera-obsessed frump.
  • Sam Smith – Senior citizen; former Elvis impersonator and all-around Casanova.
  • Pat Jones – A rude and pushy nurse/director of Magnolia Place; stage age 30-40s.
  • Ruby Sue Bennett – A quiet, romance-novel-loving nurse; stage age 30s.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT Runs March 1-17

LSC_JosephJOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Loveland Stage Company
March 1-17
[Loveland]

Directed by Michael Yarick
Orchestra directed by Jeanne Bilyeu
Choreographed by Garrett Klaas
Produced by Becky Jones & Kayla Haas

“Sha la la, Joseph, you’re doing fine! You and your dreamcoat, ahead of your time!” One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors.
Told entirely through song – The Narrator leads us through a retelling of the story of Joseph – the favorite son of Jacob – who is blessed with vivid dreams that foretell the future. Jacob buys Joseph an elegant coat of many colors, which doesn’t please his 11 brothers. After being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, he ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. However, news of Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams travels and sparks the interest of the hilarious and troubled Elvis-like Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man. In the midst of the famine, the 11 brothers find themselves unknowingly at the mercy of the brother they betrayed. Joseph tests their integrity, and ultimately the brothers are reconciled. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is set to a multitude of musical genres, spanning from traditional musical theater to country and calypso to pop and rock n’ roll.

Brighton, England. 1963. Change is in the air, and Francis Henshall is looking to make his mark. Fired from a skiffle band and in search of work, he finds himself employed by small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe, in town to collect a fee from his fiancee’s gangster father. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother, herself in love with Stanley Stubbers (her brother’s killer) who, in turn, becomes our hero’s other ‘guvnor’. Fighting a mounting sense of confusion, Francis goes out of his way to serve both bosses. But with the distractions of a pneumatic book keeper, a self-important actor and select members of the criminal fraternity (not to mention his own mammoth appetite) to contend with, how long can he keep them apart? Richard Bean’s hilarious comedy received 5-star reviews from every London newspaper and was the hit of the 2012 Broadway season.

Production dates: April 19-28
