Synopsis: CLYBOURNE PARK explodes in two outrageous acts set fifty years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as white community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. Are the issues festering beneath the floorboards actually the same, fifty years on? This excruciatingly funny and squirm-inducing satire explores the fault line between race and property. Inspired by Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A RAISIN IN THE SUN.

Auditions Announced for CRIMES OF THE HEART at The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop and director Jerry Wiesenhahn are pleased to announce auditions for CRIMES OF THE HEART by Beth Henley on the evenings of Sunday May 5th, and Monday May 6th 2024. Auditioners should reserve May 7th in the case that callbacks are warranted. Auditions will be held at The Drama Workshop located at 3716 Glenmore Ave. Megan Schultheis is producing.

Synopsis: CRIMES OF THE HEART is a Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Beth Henley. The three Magrath sisters reunite at their Grandfather’s home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi due to his severely failing health; it quickly comes to light that Babe, the youngest sister, shot her abusive husband earlier that day. As they await news of his status from the hospital, past resentments bubble to the surface and the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe’s impending trial. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of her own “crimes of the heart”.

Note: This play deals with attempted suicide, spousal abuse and other possibly difficult topics. TDW is committed to dealing with these issues with as much sensitivity as possible throughout the rehearsal process.

Character Breakdown:

  • Lenny Magrath, 30, the oldest sister. Lenny is insecure about most things in her life, but especially about her relationships with men. She has a difficult relationship with her sister Meg and hides in her caregiving, which gives her an excuse to stay home.
  • Meg Magrath, 27, the middle sister. Meg moved to Hollywood to pursue her singing career, seemingly abandoning her sisters and her relationship with Doc. She appears to live her life in the moment, but may not be as steely hard as she seems.
  • Babe Botrelle, 24, the youngest sister. Babe is the most fragile of the sisters. A dreamer and innocent, she’s not quite sure what all the fuss is about her shooting her husband.
  • Chick Boyle, 29, the sisters’ first cousin. Chick is brassy, loud and continually passes judgment on her cousins and how they live their lives.
  • Doc Porter, 30, Meg’s old boyfriend. Doc is now married with two children, but the flame he carries for Meg still burns bright.
  • Barnette Lloyd, 26, Babe’s lawyer. Barnette is a recent law school graduate who is competent beyond his years. He has a soft spot for Babe and wants to protect her from her abusive husband.

Production Dates: Performances run 3 weekends from October 4th – 20th, 2024.. There are a total of 10 performances. Friday 8pm, Saturday 8pm, Sunday 2pm each weekend, with a Thursday 730pm performance the final weekend.
