Troy Civic Theatre
Sept. 30-Oct. 9
[Troy]

Directed by Michael Schumacher

Cast: Tina Green as Ida, Janet Wasson as Ms Skillon, Carlos Baez Jr as Rev. Lionel Toop, Abby Kinnebrew Smith as Penelope Toop, Doug Gibbons as Corp. Clive Winton, Derek Dunavent as The Intruder, Brian Laughlin as The Bishop of Lax, John Lawson as Rev. Arthur Humphrey, Sam Jacobi as Sergeant Towers & Macy O’Brien as Choir Boy

This English farce is set shortly after the end of World War II in the living room of the vicarage belonging to Penelope Topp, in the fictitious village Merton-cum-Middlewick. Penelope is an American former actress and now wife of the local vicar, the Rev. Lionel Toop. When the vicar leaves for the night, an old friend of Penelope’s, Lance-Corporal Clive Winton, stops by on a quick visit. To dodge army regulations while out on the town, he changes from his uniform into Lionel’s second-best suit, complete with a clerical dog-collar. Then Lionel, arriving back, is knocked silly by a Russian escaped from the local Army base, who takes the vicar’s clothes as a disguise. Add to the confusion a feisty cockney maid, the local busybody getting drunk for the first time, and both Penelope’s uncle, the Bishop of Lax, and Aurther Humphrey, a visiting vicar, unexpectedly showing up early. Chaos quickly ensues, culminating in a cycle of running figures and mistaken identities.

VIOLET the Musical Opens NKU’s Theatre & Dance Season

NKU_Violet logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts presents “Violet: The Musical” to open the 22/23 Theatre & Dance season. “Violet” will run Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2022, at NKU’s Corbett Theatre. “Violet” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

  • What: VIOLET the Musical
  • When: Sept. 23–Oct. 2, 2022
  • Where: NKU Corbett Theatre
  • Tickets: nku.edu/tickets or (859) 572-5464

As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward ax blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved, she travels across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. Winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, “Violet” is a moving musical featuring show-stopping anthems ranging from American roots to folk to gospel.

Director Jamey Strawn notes that Violet’s scar is present through various scenic elements and lighting. “This, along with song lyrics and topical scenes, delivers a world that challenges us and unashamedly addresses racism, ableism and prejudice,” he said. “Violet is the kindred spirit that holds us to higher moral integrity. She showcases that equality for people, regardless of differences, can bring true healing.”

The cast features Tasha Conzelman, Sylas Craven, Chloe Esmeier, Zachary Farmer, Trey Finkenstead, Rachel Gardner, Chloe Hedrick, Jeremiah Jackson, Annie Jennings, Maggie Komp, Yolee Louis, Chris Monell, Ellie O’Hara, Dylan Perez, Tre Taylor, and Hailey Watson. Stage Manager: Jasmine Cosma; Choreographer: Jeri Deckard Gatch; Music Director: Scot Buzza. The show is directed by Jamey Strawn.

The evening will feature performances of vintage popular music and jazz standards by QCC’s own Sarah Folsom and Matthew Umphreys and jazz vocalist Mandy Gaines.

The phrase “Great American Songbook” often describes music from the first half of the 20th century that seems to transcend the era in which it was written.  The Great American Songbook Foundation describes these songs as collection of  “enduring standards, the songs that are played and sung over and over by multiple generations….(they) have a timeless meaning and resonance, whether they are days or decades old.”

Presented at Cincinnati’s historic Liberty Exhibition Hall, this evening of songs and sentiment is expected to sell out, so reserve your tickets today!

Friday, May 5 at 7:30pm

Polish up your cowboy boots, and join Queen City Cabaret as they celebrate the songstress who changed the game for women in Country music–the one and only Patsy Cline. Before her untimely death in 1963 at the age of 30, Cline became one of the most influential singers of the 20th century, with hit recordings such as “I Fall To Pieces,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and the #1 jukebox sensation, “Crazy.” Featuring performances by the Cincinnati Boychoir, this one-night-only showcase of vintage country hits is one you won’t want to miss!
