BOURBON AT THE BORDER Runs Aug. 5-14

FT_Bourbon at the Border logoBOURBON AT THE BORDER
Falcon Theatre
Aug. 5-14
[Newport]

Directed by Piper N. Davis

Cast: Torrie Wiggins* as May, Dathan Hooper* as Charlie, Kyndra Jefferies as Rosa & James Christian Jr. as Tyrone

When May and Charlie joined hundreds of other Americans who went to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 for a massive voter registration drive, they had no idea their lives were about to change forever. As students at Howard University, their campus activism had been met with calls to their parents and threats of expulsion. The stakes in Mississippi were a lot higher. White supremacists, outraged at the challenge to their segregated way of life, responded with violence that left three civil rights workers dead and many wounded. Soon after, President Johnson deployed thousands of American soldiers to fight the Vietnam War. Four decades later, their heroic fight for racial justice and freedom still haunt them as they struggle to make sense of their lives and look for hope in their future.

RENT Quick Review

RENT presented by The Carnegie through Aug. 26. I attended the opening Sunday performance. Please note that INTO THE WOODS is being done in rotation with RENT and GEORGE REMUS, a New Musical.

When it comes to RENT, theatre-goers tend to fall into one of three categories: Those that love RENT, those who don’t care for RENT, and those who haven’t seen RENT. Well, have I got good news for at least two-thirds of you: the Carnegie’s production is excellent.

Vocally, the production soars with strong leads and a very solid ensemble. Jackson Reagin as Roger & Ranease Brown as Mimi rock out their roles and have great chemistry together. In fact, all the character relationships among the leads are well-defined and spot on. I was also impressed by the character work of the actors who are crossing into their second repertory roles.

Where recent productions have failed for me is in establishing the tone of the time period. Not so with this production. Great care was taken to visually reflect the time with well thought out costume and prop choices, but also in portraying the uncertainty and fear of an epidemic which, 25+ years ago, was a painful death sentence.

Overall, an intimate and rocking production that will satisfy new and existing fans (and possible convert a few).

<insert obligatory lyrics quote here> 😉

My rating: 4.75 out of 5.

CABARET
Cincinnati Actor’s Studio & Academy
July 29-Aug. 7
[Avondale]

Directed by Gina Cerimele-Mechley
Music directed by Joe Montgomery
Choreographed by Gina Cerimele-Mechley & Cecelia Gries

Cast: Alex Pletikapich as Emcee, Maddi O’Connell as Sally, Trey Finkenstead as Cliff, Nick Swope as Ernst, Kate Stuard as Fraulein Schneider, Kayamarie Roll as Fraulein Kost, Ethan Brooks Baker as Herr Schultz, Hannah Hodson as Rosie, Sabrina Mack as Lulu, Peyton Wright as Frenchie, Cassandra Reeves as Fritzie/Gorilla, Cecilia Gries as Helga, Chandler Murray as Texas, Jason Coffenberry as Bobby, Tre Taylor as Victor, Con Williamson as Herman, James Pinkley as Train Officer/Sailor/Max & Jonathon Armstrong and Kat Swift as Bodyguards

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Mature content and triggering scenes.

THE FANTASTICKS Runs July 28-30

BBTC_The Fantasticks logoTHE FANTASTICKS
Bare Boards Theatre Company
July 28-30
Wilmington Performing Arts Studio

Cast: Rachel Beck as Narrator, Jennah Blair as The Girl, Sterling Goodwin as The Boy, Cole Haugh as The Actor, Timothy Larrick at the Piano, Grace Vance as The Mute, Bekah Wall as the Boy’s Father, Bryan Wallingford as the Girl’s Father & Jess Yankel as The Man Who Dies

The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator asks the audience to use their imagination and follow them all into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in the narrator’s words that, “without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”

Its moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature, meaningful love is punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become classics.
