Willkommen to CASA’s Upcoming Production of CABARET

CASA_Cabaret promoCABARET runs July 28th-July 31st & August 4th-August 7th at Cincinnati Actor’s Studio & Academy

Indifference makes you an accomplice.

Cincinnati, OH – CABARET, based on the book Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood, is a social commentary about the dangers of the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe. Book by Joe Masteroff. Music & lyrics by John Kander & Fred Ebb.

CASA, in its goal to have an audience enter the story, not just a theatre, has sprinkled this award-winning show with eye-opening truths about society TODAY. Despite having all of the allure of a cabaret: sensuality, sexuality, provoking costuming, dancing, singing, music, aerial artistry, and comedy, this brazen production draws frightening parallels between then and now.

MUSICAL SYNOPSIS: In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish.

The award-winning musical “Spring Awakening” is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind, whose work, which often criticizes bourgeois attitudes (particularly towards sex), is considered to anticipate expressionism and was influential in the development of theatre of the absurd. Wedekind was also a life-long guitar player and surely would have been a rock star today. Hence, the 21st-century musical blends the 19th-century play with an alternative rock score.
