Human Race Tells Powerful and Tender Story of a Family in Transition

While it often is the focus of news reports and television talk shows, raising transgender children is rarely the subject of a play.  Playwright Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder freely admitted “the stories I find the most compelling are often stories that force me to step out of my comfort zone and look at a subject through a new lens.”   Her own background – growing up in the deep South with gay parents and a family friend who transitioned – gives her a unique perspective and insight into her writing of the emotionally evocative drama, Everything That’s Beautiful, getting its regional premiere at The Human Race Theatre Company, February 17 – March 6, 2022 in the intimate Loft Theatre.

When Luke and Jess decide to support their 10-year-old Morgan, who was assigned male at birth but identifies as female, they relocate in order to give the family a clean start. Luke takes a job at the local waterpark, where he meets Gaby, the girl in the mermaid tank. With money tight, Jess starts working at a local coffee shop where she meets Will. These new relationships provide an escape from an already complicated family life. But when an accident threatens to expose the truth about Morgan, tensions run high. Luke finally admits the real reason they moved, a confession that could potentially destroy their family. Faced with losing his child and his family, Luke must decide what’s worth fighting for.

This production also has personal significance to its Director, Kevin Moore, being the final play he will direct before retiring from the company that he helped found in 1986. “A dear friend and colleague sent me this script saying it was right up my alley,” said Moore.  “And he was so right.  I am always drawn to stories that allow us to gain a better understanding of marginalized communities.  And I am a sucker for heartfelt, emotional stories.  That has guided many of my decisions these past 35 years.”

The extraordinary cast that will bring this show to life includes both new and returning artists: Josh Aaron McCabe (Wright State acting faculty, Human Race Monday Night Playreading); Kelly Mengelkoch (Cincinnati Shakespeare, ShenandoahBrother Wolf); Eric Deiboldt (Brighton Beach Memoirs); Teresa Langford (HRTC debut); Justin McCombs (Now And Then); and two local ten-year-olds will also make their HRTC debut and share the role of Morgan – Isabella Roberts and Jax Heritage.

Joining Director Kevin Moore on the Everything That’s Beautiful creative team is:  Tamara L. Honesty, Scenic Designer;  John Rensel, Lighting Designer;  David M. Covach, Costume Designer;  Jay Brunner, Composer;  Alexander Koker, Sound Designer; Scott Stoney, Assistant Director; and Production Stage Manager, Jacquelyn Duncan.

Everything That’s Beautiful will play in the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton, February 17 – March 6, 2022.  Tickets are on sale through Dayton Live box office, 937-228-3630, or online at www.humanracetheatre.org  All audiences are required to wear masks.  More details about the show can be found on our website.

2022-2023 Season Announced by Springboro Community Theatre

SCT_logoKicking off our season will be our summer musical at North Park Amphitheater – OLIVER! With book, music, and lyrics by Lionel Bart.

OLIVER! performances will take place August 5-7 & 12-14, 2022.

The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

Our next production in the 2022 – 2023 season will be THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, based on the novel by Mark Haddon, Adapted by Simon Stephens.

Performances are September 16-18 & 23-25, 2022.

15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched, and he distrusts strangers. Now it is 7 minutes after midnight, and Christopher stands beside his neighbor’s dead dog, Wellington, who has been speared with a garden fork. Finding himself under suspicion, Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington, and he carefully records each fact of the crime. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world.

The first musical of the 2022 – 2023 season at Springboro Community Theatre will be THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, with music and lyrics by William Finn, book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman with additional material by Jay Reiss.

Performances are set for November 11-13 & 18-20, 2022.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

Our first Youth Program production will present a series of one-acts from the Marvel Spotlight collection – HAMMERED: A Thor & Loki Play, by Christian Borle (Based on the Marvel Comics by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber & Jack Kirby) and MIRROR OF MOST VALUE: A Ms. Marvel Play, by Masi Asare (Based on the Marvel Comics by G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona & Sara Amanat).

Performances will be January 6-8 & 13-15, 2023.

One is the Norse God of Thunder, Master of the Storm, Lord of the Living Lightning, and heir to the throne of eternal Asgard. The other born of a Frost Giant, but now the Norse God of Mischief. Yet they are brothers, and together they are… The Mighty Thor and Loki.
When a strange Terrigen Mist descended upon Jersey City, Kamala Khan was imbued with polymorphic powers. Her life was changed forever and so were the lives of her family and friends. Using her newfound abilities to fight evil and protect Jersey City, she became the all new Ms. Marvel!

The next musical at Springboro Community Theatre in the 2022 – 2023 season will be RENT (Book, Music, and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson).

Going up March 3-5 & 10-12, 2023.

Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

In the Spring, we will present our final play of the season – THE OUTSIDER.
Written by Paul Slade Smith, this production will hold performances April 21-23 & 28-30, 2023.

Ned Newley doesn’t even want to be governor. He’s terrified of public speaking; his poll numbers are impressively bad. To his ever-supportive Chief of Staff, Ned seems destined to fail. But political consultant Arthur Vance sees things differently: Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. Unless the public is looking for… the worst candidate to ever run for office. A timely and hilarious comedy that skewers politics and celebrates democracy.

To wrap up our 2022 – 2023 season, the final production will be our youth musical – CYRANO DE BURGER SHACK, a modern retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand with a book by Jeremy Desmon, and featuring hit contemporary pop music!

Performances are June 16-18 & 23-25, 2023.

Cyrano is king of the local Burger Shack, but he can’t seem to win the love of his best friend, Roxanne. When Roxanne confesses her crush on the new burger-flipper, Christian, Cyrano decides that playing Cupid is better than sitting out of the game. An updated, modern-day version of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, this rollicking musical features hit contemporary pop songs that will have audiences cheering.
