CFF18: RE-GROOVING

Part of the Cincinnati Fringe Festival ’18
Gabriel’s Corner
[Over-the-Rhine]

Film and live performance unite to explore the concept of breaking free from the confines of our own self-built identity. When the ideas and expectations we unconsciously construct about ourselves hinder us from evolving to new levels of being, we must shed the forms that we have outgrown like a snake shedding its skin. Re-Grooving highlights this struggle, and ascends with the dancer’s triumphant liberation.

Comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine. Exact cast size is approximately 8, a mix of men and women with parts available for multiple adult ages. Actors could have the opportunity to play multiple characters.

A woman carries her heart, broken into nineteen pieces, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost, Maine, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end, begin, or change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and sincere, Almost Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love, each with a compelling couple at its center, each with its own touch of sorcery.

Show Dates Mid-September  all performances at Evendale Community Church

Cast Announced for MORE FUN THAN BOWLING at Mariemont Players

MPI_logoMariemont Players and director Laura Berkemeier are pleased to announce the cast of our November production, MORE FUN THAN BOWLING, by Steven Dietz.

  • Jake – Pat Kramer
  • Molly – Jackie Miesle
  • Lois – Elizabeth L. Taylor
  • Loretta – Natasha Boeckmann

Synopsis
Jake owns the bowling alley in a small Midwestern town. He is sitting on a hilltop where two of his three wives are buried. Lois was zapped by lightning while carrying a bowling trophy in a thunderstorm and Loretta was killed by a ball return machine. In his younger days, he was a promising concert musician but a foul tip baseball broke his fingers which subsequently healed into a perfect bowler’s grip. Jake replays the key frames of his life and is visited by his daughter Molly who has become adept at talking women into marrying her father for love and free lane time. But who is that nattily dressed man with dark glasses and a revolver lurking nearby?

MORE FUN THAN BOWLING runs November 2-18, 2018. To order tickets, call Betsy at 513-684-1236 OR order online at www.mariemontplayers.com. All seats are reserved and $20 each.
