CINCINNATI, OH. CINDERELLA returns this Valentine’s weekend with choreography by Victoria Morgan. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra performs the music of the legendary Sergei Prokofiev, conducted by Maestro Carmon DeLeone. Audiences have five opportunities to see the beloved tale come to life at the at the Aronoff Center, February 12-14.

From the modern vision of Artistic Director & CEO Victoria Morgan, CINDERELLA has undergone a complete revitalization since it was last performed in 2010 including fresh choreography, newly refurbished sets and updated costumes.

Wardrobe Mistress Diana Vandergriff-Adams and her team have restored the original costumes and created a modern version of Cinderella’s enchanted gown. New props and production elements will be introduced such as a larger than life pumpkin that explodes to reveal a brand new, completely redesigned carriage. Also new to the production, Cinderella’s well-known mice friends will accompany her on stage as puppets. Expanding on the fresh and youthful revitalization of CINDERELLA, nine new children’s roles have been added to make a total of 51. More than 80 boys and girls between the ages of 7-18 from Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy have been learning these roles since October.

Based on the 1967 story by Charles Perrault, CINDERELLA tells the story of young woman whose hard work and good deeds go unrecognized by her stepmother and stepsisters. She remains hopeful, despite her odds, until one day she is visited by her Fairy Godmother who magically transforms her into a princess, leading her to find love and a new life.

Morgan’s version remains loyal to the original tale, including all of your favorite constituents: the diabolical step-sisters (hilariously performed by male dancers), the enchanted pumpkin and the charming Prince. With a twist of humor and more magic than ever, CINDERELLA is perfect for all ages to enjoy. Morgan hopes that audiences will also take away a deeper message that the story represents. “CINDERELLA is so much more than a fairytale,” she says. “There are elements of perseverance and triumph in her story. CINDERELLA can remind us all that a generosity of spirit and a lively, hopeful imagination can lead to a different life – a life far better than the one you know.”

Bromels currently serves as director of engagement for ArtsWave,
following a 12-year tenure at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
Her appointment at CCM becomes effective in August of 2016.

CINCINNATI, OH—A familiar face within Cincinnati’s arts community will be joining the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s (CCM) highly regarded Department of Arts Administration this fall.

CCM Dean Peter Landgren has announced the appointment of Rebecca Bromels to the position of Assistant Professor of Arts Administration. Her appointment becomes effective in August of 2016.

Bromels currently serves as director of engagement of ArtsWave, the Greater Cincinnati region’s local arts agency and the nation’s largest community campaign for the arts. With the help of tens of thousands of donors, ArtsWave supports more than 100 arts and community organizations. These beneficiaries include CCM, which has been able to enhance its community engagement efforts through ArtsWave’s Community Partnership grants. In her position at ArtsWave, Bromels oversees volunteer programs and signature events including Macy’s Arts Sampler.

Having moved to Cincinnati in 1999 to pursue a directing career, Bromels discovered her love for arts administration during her 12-year tenure at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. As managing director for eight seasons, she worked to broaden the company’s base of support and provide resources for its innovative productions of Shakespeare and the classics.

Bromels joined ArtsWave shortly after its evolutionary change to impact-based funding and was instrumental in developing the organization’s new messaging and brand identity as director of communications.

She has also directed plays for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, the SERIALS project at Know Theatre of Cincinnati, New Edgecliff Theatre and St. Croix Festival Theatre in Wisconsin. In addition, she served as a guest lecturer in arts administration at Miami University and for the United Way BOLD board training program. In 2016, she will co-author a Corporate Arts Challenges Tool-Kit for Americans for the Arts.

Bromels holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance from Texas Christian University. She was recognized in the “Forty Under 40” class of 2005 by the Cincinnati Business Courier. She lives with her husband and two children in St. Bernard.

In his announcement of the hire, Landgren commented, “In my initial discussions with Rebecca, it became clear that she was committed to partnering with our faculty to advance CCM’s already remarkable Arts Administration program to even greater prestige. I am confident that her extensive theatre background and strong interpersonal skills will be a boon to CCM students and faculty alike.”

Utilizing the combined resources of CCM and UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business, the Department of Arts Administration offers one of the few joint MA/MBA arts administration programs in the United States. The highly selective program boasts a 100% job placement rate for its past seven years of graduates.

Who’s NOT Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

CSP_Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf logo2CenterStage Players – That’s Who!

Come see this award winning play which is seldom produced because of its difficulties.

A biting dark comedy and gut-wrenching psychological portrait of the breakdown of a marriage, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has been a mainstay of American theater since winning the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1962–63 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Its stars won the 1963 Tony Awards for Best Actor and Actress as well. It was also selected for the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Drama by that award’s drama jury. However, the award’s advisory board – the trustees of Columbia University – objected to the play’s then-controversial use of profanity and sexual themes, and overruled the award’s advisory committee, awarding no Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1963. It was later immortalized in a film adaptation starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Written by the acclaimed Edward Albee, the story follows George and Martha, a middle-aged couple who invite a younger husband and wife over for drinks and, over the course of the evening, use their guests as pawns in increasingly cruel mind games, leading to a devastating revelation. Razor-sharp dialogue and incisive character portraits make Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? one for your theatrical bucket list.  Now Lynne Aronson directs a brilliant new production for CenterStage Players.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for Seniors/Students/Military and are available at www.centerstageplayersinc.com.

Show dates:  February 5, 6, 11, 12 & 13 at 8PM and February 7 at 3PM.

The Cast:

  • George – Bill Keeton
  • Martha – Julie Poux
  • Nick – Michael Gettinger
  • Honey – Kiya Fix

Don’t miss this production!  You may not be able to ever see it anywhere else!

Irreverent Comedy THE REVOLUTIONISTS Premieres in Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s Thompson Shelterhouse, Feb. 5-March 6, 2016

PIP_The Revolutionists promo(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park unleashes girl-powered comedy with THE REVOLUTIONISTS, Lauren Gunderson’s irreverent world premiere about four badass femmes of the French Revolution. THE REVOLUTIONISTS debuts in the Playhouse’s Thompson Shelterhouse Theatre Feb. 5 through March 6.

At the height of the Reign of Terror, playwright Olympe De Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, activist Marianne Angelle and former queen Marie Antoinette hang out, plot murder and try to beat back extremist insanity in Paris. This world premiere fantasia by one of the country’s most exciting young playwrights considers how we actually go about changing the world.

Marie Antoinette, whose legacy has most decidedly not been positive, seems an unlikely heroine. That, precisely, is one of Gunderson’s motivations for writing about “hidden history”: to shine a light on the mythology versus the humanity of each of her characters and to lend voices to obscure but significant and historic heroines de Gouges and Corday as well as Angelle, who is an amalgam of nameless women of color who rebelled, fought and died for the cause of freedom.

“Lauren Gunderson is one of the hottest playwrights in America right now,” explains Playhouse Artistic Director Blake Robison about his decision to produce the world premiere of THE REVOLUTIONISTS in the Shelterhouse. “Theatres across the country are discovering her unique voice, her sense of style and comedy. Producing the premiere of her newest play is an ideal way to introduce a significant up-and-coming artist to our community.”

Gunderson’s play I and You was awarded the prestigious 2014 Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award and was also a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Award. It debuts off-Broadway this month at 59E59 Theaters. Her additional plays include Silent Sky, Bauer, By and By, Toil and Trouble and Exit, Pursued by a Bear.

Eleanor Holdridge is directing THE REVOLUTIONISTS and has been involved with the project since its early stages. “I love that Lauren’s language is both super-contemporary and heightened at the same time, filled with humor, beauty and wit,” says Holdridge. “She channels a sense of history while writing for the present. In I and You, she interwove the words of Walt Whitman; in THE REVOLUTIONISTS, she takes the fervent dreams of four dynamic historical women and creates a stunning voice for them.”

Robison worked with Holdridge when he was producing artistic director of Round House Theatre in Washington, D.C. “She is a fixture in the theatre community there,” he says. “Her work is always daring and thoughtful. Last year, I invited her to submit some ideas for the season, and she sent me an early draft of THE REVOLUTIONISTS, which she’s been developing with the playwright. Her relationship with Lauren and her history with the script will bring our premiere to life in an exciting way.”

THE REVOLUTIONISTS’ cast includes Lise Bruneau as Olympe de Gouges, Jessica Lynn Carroll as Marie Antoinette/Fraternité, Keira Keeley as Charlotte Corday/Fraternité and Kenita R. Miller as Marianne Angelle.

The creative team for THE REVOLUTIONISTS, in addition to Holdridge, includes set and costume designer Marion Williams, lighting designer Mark Barton and sound designer Scott Killian. Andrea L. Shell is the stage manager.

THE REVOLUTIONISTS is sponsored by Sallie and Randolph Wadsworth. The design sponsor is Stable Two Financial. Additional support is provided by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. THE REVOLUTIONISTS is the recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.

Ticket prices for THE REVOLUTIONISTS start at $35. Prices are subject to change, and patrons are encouraged to buy early for the best seats at the best prices. The show is appropriate for adult and older teenage audiences.

Continuing this season is the popular Sunday College Night, with tickets to all 7 p.m. Sunday performances priced at just $10 with a valid student ID. Student tickets are just $15 on the day of the show for all other performances.

Discounted ticket prices for teens and students are available in advance for all productions for $30 and $45, depending on seat location.

Previews for THE REVOLUTIONISTS are at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5; 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6; 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7; 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9; and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10. The official opening night is Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays.
