EIGHT: THE REINDEER MONOLOGUES presented by Falcon Theater through Dec. 13. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

Already had your fill of holiday “cheer?” Are you going to [ginger] snap if you hear one more song about that fat man and his sled of toys? Are you looking for something or someone to deck, besides the halls? If so, Falcon has the “holiday” show for you…

Scandal is rocking the North Pole with Christmas hanging in the balance. Santa’s elite, eight reindeer are divided into two camps, and each has a chance to tell their story.

The set, designed by Mark Williams, is a great concept and visually well-done. It also gives director Tara Williams multiple options for play areas, of which, she fully takes advantage with her blocking.

All eight performers are strong and offer solid interpretations of their individual characters. The quality of the writing, of the individual monologues, does vary. My personal favorites are those of Cupid (Mike Fielder), Blitzen (Linnea Bond), Dancer (Lisa D. Dirkes) and Donner (David Levy). For laughs, Dirkes’ not-to-bright Dancer and Fielder’s “festive,” but not so festively-dressed, Cupid top the list.

FT_Eight VixenOf the eight, AJ Ford as Hollywood seemed the least comfortable with his material. I also thought that there was a bit more comedy available in Dasher’s rant, (played by Eric Day) if you bear in mind the number of head traumas Dasher has received over the years.

THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES is a fun and laugh out loud alternative to the normal holiday offerings. But definitely not for the young or easily offended. Opening night did sell out, so I recommend advance purchase of tickets.

My rating: 4.0 out of 5

CYPT Alumni Awards Announced

CYPT_logoEvery year at the Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre Benefit, several notable alumni are recognized for their contributions to the organization or as great ambassadors after their years in CYPT.

The award recipients are, for the first time, being announced in advance of the Benefit.

It is with great pleasure that we honor the following:

Joe Bunke
2014 CYPT Founder’s Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the success and long term development of Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre and Cincinnati Landmark Productions. A long-term member of the Board of Directors for Cincinnati Landmark Productions, Joe has presided over many important initiatives for the organization and has been an important ambassador within the west side business community. Joe is President of Cincinnati Federal Savings and Loan, a “local” full service community bank that honors Cincinnati’s traditions and neighborhoods.

Previous honorees: Mark Mueller, Tony Hungler, Steve Papin, Doug Ridenour, Nicola Burgun, Greg Dastillung.

Laura Grosse Holland
2014 Distinguished Alumni Award – Life

Created to recognize the many alumni who make valuable contributions to our community through their volunteerism or occupations outside the arts. While Laura has stayed involved in the arts since her tenure at CYPT in the late 80s and early 90s, she has also exhibited extraordinary selflessness and humanitarianism through her work with St. Teresa Church, Oak Hills School District and the Shriner’s Hospital.

Previous honorees: Greg Lynch, Sean Tierney, Matt Miller, Tara Tuttle, Molly O’Brien Peters.

Amy Miller
Matthew Wilson
The Matt Gunnels Memorial Award for Distinguished Alumni – Performing Arts
This award recognizes notable achievements in the performing arts after one’s participation in CYPT. Matthew and Amy in their time since CYPT have made sizable impacts on the performing arts – albeit on two different sides of the country.
Note that at the Benefit, this award will officially be re-named in honor of CYPT Alumni Matt Gunnels, who passed away this year.
Amy was in the National Tour and Broadway casts of 42nd Street as well as myriad television shows, and national commercials. For 6 years and counting, Amy has been the Artistic Director, CEO and Founding Member of the Transcendence Theatre Company – a professional community of performing artists in California.
Matthew worked in administration at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City, before returning to Cincinnati to earn his Master’s Degree. An accomplished actor, Matt has appeared in innumerable shows around town since his return, including his acclaimed role as Renfield in Covedale Center’s Dracula. But it’s his work as choreographer and director that has him on “people to watch” lists in local arts circles. Credits include Big River and 42nd Street on the Showboat, and Legally Blonde, Will Rogers Follies and Into the Woods at the Covedale Center.
Previous honorees: Richard Oberacker, Allen Kendall, Eric Bricking, Aaron LaVigne, Brandy Rice Bailey.
Kelcey Steele
2014 CYPT Hall of Fame Award
Kelcey receives the CYPT Hall of Fame award for his outstanding performances during his years with Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre. Kelcey began his CYPT career in 2010 as Enjolras in Les Miserables, followed by Bela Zangler in 2011’s Crazy For You and the lead role of Robbie Hart in 2012’s The Wedding Singer.  A true standout performer, Kelcey has also appeared in other Cincinnati Landmark Productions’ shows, including Big River on the Showboat Majestic, Will Rogers Follies at Covedale Center and on the stage of Miami Universty. On top of all that, Kelcey is an internationally ranked Irish Dance competitor.
Previous honorees: Jan Bruce, Laura Zervic, Doug Berlon, Joe Moeller, Jeni Bayer Schwiers, Tommy Boeing, Emily Berger, Susie Robinson.

Congratulations to the recipients and to all nominated. Join us on December 27 at the Benefit as we honor these deserving individuals in person.

Third time and still as charming as ever.

One of ETC’s most cherished family-friendly holiday musicals returns to the stage for a third time. SLEEPING BEAUTY is written by local playwright Joseph McDonough with music and lyrics by David Kisor. The pair take the familiar story and give it a modern twist with a floral bent.

Deb.G.Girdler returns for a third time as the evil Wisteria who curses Briar Rose. Girdler is clearly having a blast on stage as she belittles and belts her way through the show.Joining her in a hat trick is Michael G. Bath as Wisteria’s hench-bird, Falcon. Smart tongued and quick-witted, the two make a delightfully wicked pair. Wisteria also performs my favorite numbers in the show, “A Thorn in my Side” and “I’ve Heard It All Before.”

Three of ETC’s “Wonderetts” return to play Wisteria’s three fairy sisters. Denise Devlin as Liliac, Sara Mackie as Marigold, & Brooke Steel as Daisy. As usual, the three have a fun chemistry and sound great together.

The royal parents, played by Phil Fiorini (King Stefan) & Kate Wilford (Queen Olivia) are an entertaining duo, especially when they don’t see eye to eye.

Busy as a bee Dee Anne Bryll stages fun choreography for several ensemble numbers.

The characters in the production have a very clever and unique look. Great work by costume designer Reba Senske and wig and makeup designer Kelly Yurko. Favorite costumes include Wisteria, her three sisters, Falcon, Queen Olivia and the dragon.

SLEEPING BEAUTY is entertaining, bright and fun for the whole family.

Butler Tech Seeks Performing Arts Instructor

Butler Tech logoThis is a very unique opportunity for anyone who has been working/has worked professionally in theatre who is now looking for something a bit more steady (in an area with a much lower cost of living). This position will not begin until next fall, but we are hoping to cast a wide net in order to pull in just the right person.

Must be comfortable coaching vocals for both musical theatre and rock performance, directing and working with student actors, and accompanying students. This school is a unique place focused on high school students who have a passion for the arts and who are considering pursuing a career in an arts field. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ALREADY BE A LICENSED TEACHER…in fact, it will probably be less annoying for you if you are not.

This is a career technical job, which means that we are looking to hire out of the workforce in the performing arts field. There will be a licensure program involved–even for folks who already have academic licensure. If you know anyone who has these skills and who may be looking for some stability, or who loves working with young people or who is ready for a different challenge–please encourage them to check out the posting below. Also, don’t be overwhelmed by the application system–it’s set up for an academic world, so just complete what applies and a resume can cover the rest.
