I dare you not to laugh — to laugh uproariously at the high jinks on the stage, as Jeeves the valet rescues Bertie Wooster and his upper-class friends and relations from the ridiculous situations they create for themselves in this jazz age comedy set in the late 1920’s. JEEVES IN BLOOM, Margaret Raether’s stage adaptation from works of fiction by the prolific P.G. Wodehouse, wonderfully captures the late British humorist’s renowned wit. The lovably loopy Bertie Wooster always manages to get into socially precarious situations. This time around he finds himself dodging romantic entanglements with a starry-eyed young woman, eluding an enraged chef wielding a meat cleaver, and begrudgingly helping his Aunt Dahlia to commit a burglary. Thank heaven Jeeves is there to save the day!

Characters: 2 F, 5 M

  • Jeeves: The ever-calm, ever pleasant, all-knowing butler to Bertie Wooster. Always seems to be one-step ahead of any situation. Cares for Bertie, despite his flaws.
    Stage age: 35-65
  • Bertie Wooster: Crisp, energetic, Upper class young man. Not as smart as he thinks he is. Stage age: mid-twenties
  • Augustus (Gussie): Bertie’s friend, in love with Madeline but tongue-tied whenever she is around. More comfortable with newts. Stage age: mid-twenties
  • Madeline: A pleasant, Upper class young lady who dreams of romance. Stage-age: mid-twenties
  • Dahlia: Bertie’s aunt. A ‘modern”, no nonsense woman of the Upper Class. Stage age: 40-60
  • Tom: Madeline’s uncle, husband to Deliah. Upper class but doesn’t act it. Loves food, guns and Daisy – in that order. Stage age: 45-65
  • Anatole: Exceedingly egotistical, flamboyantly French chef Stage age: mid-30’s to 40’s

D2D Presents NUNSENSE Dec. 5 & 6 at the Mathile Theater

Dare to Defy Productions Presents Nunsense December 5th and 6th at The Mathile Theater, Benjamin and Marian Shuster Performing Arts Center

D2D_logoFollowing the death of 52 of the 72 nuns, from the Sisters of Hoboken Parish due to their cooks’ unfortunate cooking abilities, Mother Superior has a dream that she should start a greeting card company to raise money for the funerals. The company is such a success that she accidentally spends all of the remaining money on a TV and VCR for the
convent, leaving her without funds to pay for the funerals for four of the dead sisters. The nuns are placed on ice and a variety show is staged to raise the necessary funeral expenses.

Participating in the project are Mother Superior/ Mary Regina (Angie Thacker), a former circus performer who can not resist the spotlight, her competitive but dignified rival, second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert (Angele Price), Sister Robert Anne (Cassie Mikat), a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, Sister Mary Leo (Tori Kocher), a novice who is determined to be the world’s first ballerina nun; and wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia (Danielle Kubasky), who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. The entertainment that they present includes solo star turns, madcap dance routines, and even an audience quiz!

Nunsense is a musical comedy with book, music, and lyrics by Dan Goggin. The show was originally written as a line of greeting cards that expanded into a cabaret and eventually a full-length, Off-Broadway musical. The original Off-Broadway production opened in December of 1985 and ran for a total of 3,672 performances, making it the second longest running Off-Broadway musical in history. The show was adapted for television and starred Rue McClanahan as Mother Superior.

The show will be staged at The Mathile Theatre located in the Benjamin and Marian Shuster Performing Arts Center on December 5th and 6th at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available at www.ticketcenterstage.com or you can call the box office at 937-228-3630. All seats are $20.00

Do not miss these witty and hilarious sisters blessing the stage one song at a time!

CCM continues its 2014-15 Mainstage Series this week with the upbeat musical, Legally Blonde.

Directed and choreographed by Professor of Musical Theatre Diane Lala with musical direction by second-year graduate student Craig DaltonLegally Blonde makes its CCM debut Oct. 23 – Nov. 2 in Patricia Corbett Theater.

Based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the MGM motion picture of the same name, Legally Blonde is a modern-day coming of age tale featuring perky and lovable sorority girl Elle Woods. Elle enrolls in Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her lost love, Warner. In order for Elle to make it at Harvard she must prove to everyone, including herself, that she has what it takes. When her resolution is tested, Elle discovers what she is truly made of, surpassing her own wildest expectations and finding her inner strength and intelligence.

Guest artist Joe Leonard provides the scenic design for this musical movie adaptation. A 1989 graduate of CCM’s Department of Theatre Design and Production, Leonard’s vision for Legally Blonde was incredibly dynamic. This result is a set in which everything moves, flips, turns and flies. “The positive energy of Elle’s story is carried through to every element of the production,” Lala explains.

Legally Blonde features 16 memorable musical numbers by the Drama Desk and Tony Award nominated composer and lyricist team of Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, with a book by Heather Hach.

The role of Elle Woods is incredibly fun but is also very demanding. Because Elle appears in every scene of this high-energy musical, the role has been double cast and will be played by Sarah Bishop and Lawson Young, both senior musical theatre majors. Likewise, the role of Emmett will be played by senior Nathanial Irvin and junior Chris Collins-Pisano.

Legally Blonde also features two special performers who are brand new to the CCM stage. Jackson and Jilly will play the parts of Rufus and Bruiser, two of musical theatre’s most beloved dogs. Jilly is a Legally Blonde veteran, having played the part of Bruiser in Covedale Theater’s production of Legally Blonde last spring. Jackson is making his acting debut in this fun-filled production.

Legally Blonde is a lively musical romp with a touching lesson. Audiences will thoroughly enjoy this production and may even learn not to judge a book by its cover!

CSC’s THE BIRDS Recognized by LCT for Sound and Lighting Design

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s THE BIRDS recognized by LCT for its sound and lighting design.

THE BIRDS is an adaptation of Daphne Du Marier’s short story which was also the inspiration for Hitchcock’s classic film. For reasons unknown, the birds have turned against man, attacking them maliciously and relentlessly. In a small seaside cabin, a group of strangers find themselves thrust together, each seeking sanctuary from the savage avian menace. But as the situation becomes increasingly dire and the tension between the survivors inexorably grows, it isn’t long before the atmosphere turns ugly, and they discover that the horror hovering outside is nothing compared to that which lurks within.

Panelists praised Andrew Hungerford for lighting design and Doug Borntrager for sound design: “Lighting and sound contribute to the sense of menace and claustrophobia while the actors continue to open and close the shuttered doors and windows between waves of the bird attacks. The lighting is especially dramatic when leaking through the barricaded windows and the continuous sounds of the birds reminds the audience of the outside threat.”

CSC’s THE BIRDS runs through November 8th. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.cincyshakes.com/

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT party in the summer.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement.
