to Benefit Public Radio WMKV 89.3FM and WLHS 89.9FM

CINCINNATI, OH – One of the rarest appearances by a legacy big band is happening at Cincinnati Music Hall Ballroom on Thursday, February 5 from 7:00-10:00 PM as WMKV 89.3FM and WLHS 89.9FM bring The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra to Cincinnati for the first time in more than a decade.  The event will be a dance and concert with a large open dance floor.

Tickets are $30 and are on sale now at (513) 621-2787, www.cincinnatiarts.org, and the Music Hall and Aronoff Center Ticket Offices.  Discount $3 parking is available for the event.  A limited block of student discount tickets is available by calling (513) 621-2787.

“This is a coup for Cincinnati since the national touring Count Basie Orchestra rarely comes through this area,” says WMKV Development Director Bob Hanneken. “It’s taken us two years to work out the details to bring this band here, and our goal is to preserve this tremendous big band music.”

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra is the family-sanctioned national touring big band that travels the U.S.   It will present a three-hour concert and dance to benefit public radio WMKV 89.3FM which is simulcast on 89.9FM WLHS.

This is another in a series of big bands to be brought to the Music Hall Ballroom by WMKV/WLHS, including legacy bands such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Harry James Orchestra, and the Artie Shaw Orchestra, plus the Boilermaker Jazz Band’s Tribute to Benny Goodman.   Music Hall Ballroom can accommodate enough audience so that WMKV can entertain the notion of bringing in a band as popular as the Count Basie Orchestra.  John Morris Russell of the Cincinnati Pops has dubbed the series “Big Bands in the Ballroom.”

The concert is made possible by the support of Mercedes Benz of Ft. Mitchell.

“This is one from the WMKV ‘bucket list’ because we’ve had so many fans asking about the Basie Band, and tickets should move briskly,” adds WMKV Station Director George Zahn. “Offering some student discount tickets also reinforces the trend we’ve seen of younger dancers joining our events, making it ideal for adults of all ages.”

WMKV is an independent public radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio, celebrating its 19th year of operation, and the only station in the country owned by a continuous care retirement community (CCRC), Maple Knoll Village, and serves as a mission-oriented feature of parent Maple Knoll Communities, Inc.  The station has carved a niche as a local broadcast and worldwide-streaming audio leader for nostalgia including music (now oldies, standards, and big bands), classic radio comedy and drama, and information programs.  The station can be heard at 89.3FM (now also simulcast on 89.9FM WLHS in Butler and Warren Counties), and streams audio worldwide 24/7 at www.wmkvfm.org.

The 22,000 square-foot Music Hall Ballroom is Cincinnati’s largest event room outside of those in the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati.  When it opened in January of 1928 on the second floor of the south wing of Music Hall, it quickly became the place to socialize and celebrate events and has hosted countless concerts, dances, and celebrations.  Renovated in 1998, the Music Hall Ballroom features many art deco fixtures from the old RKO Albee Theater, and now houses The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, which was once located in the RKO Albee Theater and later in the Emery Theatre.

Greek Tragedy Opens NKU’s Theatre Season

NKU_The BacchaeHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY –Northern Kentucky University opens its 2014-15 Theatre and Dance season with The Bacchae, running September 25 – October 5.

THE BACCHAE
By Euripedes
Directed by Sandra Forman
September 25 – October 5, 2014
NKU Robert & Rosemary Stauss Theatre

First performed in 405 BC after his death in exile, The Bacchae is Euripedes’ last play and greatest accomplishment. After several decades, the god Dionysus returns to his birthplace in Thebes in order to clear his mother’s name and reclaim his godly status. During Dionysus’ absence the kingdom is ruled by the misguided Pentheus who asserts reason and humanism over a belief in the gods. It was Pentheus’ decision to not allow the worship of the beloved Dionysus in Thebes creating civil unrest. Dionysus tries to persuade Pentheus to abandon his destructive path, but Pentheus does not relent ultimately forcing Dionysus to wield his power to protect his sacred homeland.

NKU’s production, directed by professor Sandra Forman, blends classical and contemporary elements to tell a story of decadence and debauchery, blurring the lines of good and evil. Forman’s cast brings to life the strange eroticism and tragic beauty that makes Euripides’ masterwork an alluring tale of power and revenge.

HANDS ON A HARDBODY presented by Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati through Sept. 21. More information.

Based on the description, it would be easy to dismiss HANDS ON A HARDBODY as a gimmick show. What sets it apart is its book by Doug Wright. Two of his other works, I AM MY OWN WIFE and GREY GARDENS have been staged in recent years at ETC.

Director D. Lynn Meyers has found the heart in the story and cast an impressive group of character actors, with strong voices, to bring that story to life. Together, they have created so many little, emotionally-true moments that pull you in, and make you care about the people on stage. Even perfectly-loathsome Benny Perkins played by Charlie Clark.

Deb G. Girdler is a hoot as opinionated Janis Curtis. Phil Fiorini brings a nice, quiet dignity to JD Drew. He is paired with Kate Wilford as wife Virginia, who’s Act I exit is heartbreaking. Michael Gerard Carr and Brooke Steele make it easy to root for the budding romance of contestants Greg Wilhote and Killi Mangrum. Sara Mackie is perfectly fun as religious true-believer Norma Valverde.

Chris Alvaro, played by Dallas Padoven, has a strong voice and does well with his solo, “Stronger.” I do feel that the sunglasses worked against the actor, and the character comes off a bit too stoic. Since we can’t see Alvaro’s eyes for most of the show, the actor’s body language needs to be a bit bigger to give us an idea of what the character is thinking.

Props to Jim Hopkins for hopping into the role of Don Curtis with only 24 hours notice. Cast member Michael Flannery was called out of town for a family emergency, but will be returning to the role. Sending good vibes his way.

My favorite song in the show would have to be “Used to Be” performed by Fiorini and Clark with the Company. It is a melancholy lament about the changes to their small town, which immediately strikes an emotional cord with anyone of a certain age.

Patti James’ choreography is fun and inventive. Not an easy task when, for the most part, the cast must have one hand on a rotating truck. Favorite numbers include the backup trio of “Wonderettes” (Denise Devlin, Mackie & Steele) to Ronald McCowan’s (played by Geoffrey Warren Barnes II) “My Problem Right There,” Devlin and Michael Shawn Starks’s rockin’ duet “Burn That Bridge” and the Stomp-esque rendition of “Joy of the Lord.”

Opening night, I did struggle in most numbers to hear the lyrics over the music. Unfortunately Jordan De Leon’s heartfelt “Born in Laredo” was the most difficult to hear. If all lead singers’ mic could get a small bump in each number it might help.

Before the show, the audience question of the evening was “How did they get that truck into the theater?” Meyers’ provided the answer in her curtain speech, “Believe it or not, the truck fit through those double doors,” indicating the doors visible on audience-left wall.

Overall a fun and entertaining production and a great start to the 2014-2015 season. Tickets sales have been really strong. I recommend you get your tickets sooner rather than later.
