REPERTORY THEATRE Runs July 24-26

SOAW_Repertory TheatreREPERTORY THEATRE
Presented by Stone on a Walk Theatre
July 24-26
Over-the-Rhine

Directed by John Leo Muething

Cast: Patrick Phillips as The Playwright & Jonathan Long as The Artistic Director

A young, timid playwright goes to the office of the artistic director of a prestigious national theatre to discuss his debut play (which is definitely not about his father). With the playwright struggling to follow the train of thought of the neurotic, Hamlet-obsessed, plum-eating director, the interview goes from nerve-wrecking to insane when the theatre itself seems to be joining into the mayhem.

CCPA’s THE SUNSHINE BOYS Earns 4 Star LCT Rating

Dave Roth as Al Lewis & Herb DuVal as Willie Clark.

Covedale Theatre’s production of THE SUNSHINE BOYS is a crowd pleaser, earning 4 stars from The League of Cincinnati Theatres. It is running at the Covedale Theatre until June 29.

Panelists call it a “Great rendition of what is considered Neil Simon’s funniest play.”

“Herb DuVal (Willie) and Dave Roth (Al) delivered their lines like they were written for them,” said one panelist. “Their keen sense of timing and delivery told the story of these two cantankerous men who spent years working together in Vaudeville.” The team broke up due to a forgotten disagreement. “Down deep, they actually care for each other,” the panelist continued. Another added, “DuVal’s portrayal of Willie Clark was top notch. He was able to be both funny and compelling at the same time.”

Panelists also praised the set designed by Brett Bowling, “It was delightfully rich and intricate. It looked like a seedy hotel that an old actor would stay in. The photos on the wall of old celebrities were marvelous and it was great that a photo of the actor playing Al Lewis was pinned to the dart board and had drawn-in devil horns.”

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony nominated top 40 score and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and open mind.
